Hi, new to the forum but certainly not the series. Just thought to pose the question as I'm sure others have likewise before me but given I personally felt FF7 was the best of the series to date are there other games out there worth considering which utilise similar game mechanics?

The subsequent editions (FF8, etc) and FF7 spin-offs migrate away from the style and gameplay that I really enjoyed in the original. Anyone come across anything?

Thanks :)

Don't know what you mean :kelly:............if your talking about having the same style of gameplay, good luck...........I think the chances are pretty slim, which other games do you see have the same gameplay like FF7?

The battle system has developed in other words

SE won't go back to the old days.

Try Final Fantasy VI.

Other than that, I can only offer Dragon Quest VIII. It's turned based, but it's a hell of a game.

Not much can really compare to VII. It stands on its own, like the rest of the Final Fantasies.

If you speak about materia, I haven't seen any.

If you speak of turns, then the PS2 is a gold mine. Not only Final Fantasy, but Shin MEgami Tensei offers lots of customization like FFVII. And the new Dragon Quest on the DS, IX, is very kickass; it lets you creat your characters (their looks, names, and stats).

If you want something really similar to FFVII with a system similar to that of the Materia one, then it doesn't exist.

If you want a game with a battle system similar to FFVII (i.e. turn-based, menu-driven), then any FF game up to about FFXII has something to offer for you. And like the poster above me, try out Dragon Quest. They've kept the battle system in each game notoriously conventional in each installment.

Still, I'm a bit puzzled with what you mean when you say FFVIII onwards migrate away from the style and gameplay that FFVII has. I actually think that FFIX particularly isn't that dissimilar to FFVII whatsoever.

If you are looking for alternatives to final fantasy but with a similar shape to play, always have chronno trigger is the same height as the Final Fantasy VI and it is a pretty cool game

Indeed, there isnt anything really like Final Fantasy VII with the materia system. There are plenty of other great RPGs out there, which I personally think are better then VII, but give the rest of the other FFs a try if you havent already.
