I've got some free time and thought I'd replay FFXII. I never fully finished it the first time, took way too long on it, got bored half way through and left it for about 6 months, then I returned to it but had forgotten most of the story so the rest of the game was mostly played just for the awesome world and side quests. I didn't get into the gambit or levelling system properly and I think that's why I ended up not being able to complete it.

Then I got the feeling that I wanted to replay Star Ocean: The Last Hope again. The thought sort of came out of nowhere but I did really enjoy this game, it's one of my favourite games outwith some of the Final Fantasy games. Like XII I took a while to get through this game, it broke half way through and before I got a new copy I ended up playing another game so by the time I got back to this game it wasn't the same feelings as before.

So thoughts? Which should I replay first? At the moment I'm leaning towards XII because I never got to properly appreciate it the first time whereas SO:TLH I finished and loved so I don't feel like I missed out on anything with it.

(I hope I've posted this in the right section)

12 is worth another shot HOWEVER if you are going to play it to "enjoy" the history then pass to Star Ocean, i havent played the game but FFXII story can be surpassed by almost any Title i think (Unless you are a politician) the gameplay of XII is good altough broken in Boss fights (You might want to follow a guide to get the Zodiac Spear).

If your familiar towards the Tactics series then give FF 12 another try. You'll feel more welcome within the FF 12 world and it will feel more like a Final Fantasy rather than something unfamiliar and out of the box.

Also if you're looking for something more mature and less anime like then give FF12 another shot. If your looking for more fun, imaginative and closer to that old Final Fantasy feeling then play Star Ocean.

Well, what sort of mood are you in? Of the two, FFXII has the better story by miles, so if it's for the experience, that'd be the better option, but Star Ocean has significantly more to do in it outside of the main story. Of the two, Star Ocean does have better gameplay as well: real-time combat is significantly more involving. XII's combat system might be the pinnacle of the FF series, but it's no match at all for proper real time combat.

Replaying Star Ocean on a higher difficulty setting - I wouldn't recommend Chaos; Universe maybe...unless you like putting yourself through hell - might offer you a better experience. Try keeping Faize on your team instead of Arumat and see where it takes you if you're up for a challenge. Go through the optional dungeons - both of which are significantly harder than anything FFXII will offer you - and work on your battle trophies. SO4 has a wonderful postgame typical of tri-Ace, and by comparison all FFXII really has to do are the Missions and the optional Espers...which are all useless, asides maybe Zeromus. If you've got the PS3 version, there is the platinum trophy to work towards, as well...

Oh, plus Bacchus is in SO4. You've gotta love Bacchus. BLACK HOLE SPHERE til the cows come home :yay:

I always had Faize on my team the first time I played because I totally loved him and couldn't get enough of him. I thought you didn't get Arumat until much later in the game though and then he's sort of to replace Faize...? Or am I remembering things wrong? If I replay I might go for a higher difficulty, but I can't remember what I did it on the first time lol and I found it kind of hard already.

I dunno...I'm sort of leaning more towards XII, because some people say the story was good and that's what I really didn't get the first time. Star Ocean though I sort of want to replay because I really enjoyed it the first time (mostly for the story believe it or not, despite some really cringy things) but didn't get to appreciate it as much since it broke half way through.

In general I play games for the story first and foremost, gameplay and the rest comes second most of the time.

Arumat does replace Faize, but the second time around and so on you get the chance to keep Faize instead at the point where you'd normally get him. I think you have to carry over your battle trophies/monster data to have that happen, but I'm not sure...I'd do that anyway just in case, and because you might have earned some murderously nasty battle trophies. xD

If the rest comes a second time for you, Star Ocean will keep you going a hell of a lot longer than FFXII, but if you're playing for the story...
