Final Fantasy VII is my favourite. It has a great story, great characters, great everything. Don't get me wrong, FFVIII is a great game too but FFVII scrapes the win.

Final Fantasy VII. For me, it's the best in the series. There's better character depth for all of the main characters in the story and they're more likeable. I also thought that there was a deeper story in FFVII, and it's the only one that leaves a lot to the imagination and gives a lot of speculation for the fans. The whole Clorits/ Cloti argument is the best example of this. The materia system was better too. I didn't like having to draw magics from your enemies, and how you could junction them to put your stats up so much. Essentially, you didn't really need to level up because of it

FFVII fo sho' FFVIII doesn't even come close to it. But honestly I don't like FFVIII anyway. I just found the characters in VII far more likable too.

Final Fantasy VIII was the first FF game I played but I still like FF VII more.

VII - No contest.

VII is one of the greatest video games of all time ever. Ten years after its release it is Still being debated about - The Aeris VS Tifa topics are a prime example of this - these arguments will NEVER go away - ever ever ever, the character death and stroyline in FFVII is MUCH deeper than FFVIII - in FFVIII 5 of the characters grew up in the same orphanage and cant remember thier past - the other one started a rebel group to piss her father off -_- - while VII covers all of the characters history perfectly. Plus the Squinoa pairing seems to be very rushed - at the end of disk 2 Squall was like "whatever" each time rinoa talked to him - but in disk 3 when she went into a coma he was all like "OMG I LURVE YOU RINOA!" While the love storys (depending on which one you follow Cleris or Cloti) develop much more slowly and are more realistic than the Squinoa pairing (personally i think SelphiexIrvine is more developed than Squinoa)

In terms of Gameplay - FFVII wins - NO contest - in VIII it was so infuriating having to draw magic and equip it like an item. plus if the Drawing didnt work you hust WASTED a whole turn.

So in Short FFVII > FFVIII

and i wish everyone who voted would post why  the person who voted for VIII hasnt posted thier reasons.

because there are no real reasons to vote for VIII %D xDD

I gotta say you pretty much summed up perfectly for me why I prefer VII over VIII. The whole orphanage thing alone made me disgusted with VIII. Well, Rinoa and Squall did a pretty good job of their own too xD

Ummm...better?

Well I'm going to answer with which one I prefer. FFVII hands down. Awesome story, system, controls, battles, everything. Mainly though, along with story, was the awesome characters. I could not connect with any of the characters in FFVIII for some reason.

it was close for me, they did an excellent job on both, i like the GF systems, and everything, but like most of you have stated, VII story is just so much more in depth and there was more to do i found in VII.

I didn't vote because quite frankly, I like them both equally. There's things in VII that stands out in itself, and the same for VIII. I like the storyline, characters, battle system, etc. They are all unique on each games.

I was actually able to connect with the characters in VIII. I don't know why...I guess in order to really connect with the characters, you have got to love the game itself and appreciate each characters, no matter their flaws and weaknesses.

As for VII, simply fantastic. I love the whole complex storyline and Cloud's past. It is definitely a game that I will always cherish.

I couldn't connect to the characters in VIII either. Squall was obnoxious and didn't truly undergo much development. His transformation from Lonewolf Emo Boy to In Love Emo Boy felt very rigid and forced. I think that if the relationships weren't so rushed it could have worked much better, but they decided to concentrate more on the overall story than the characters. Which is odd to me considering the official Theme of VIII is "Love".

Regarding VII, I think everything that needs to be said has been. So all I have to offer is that I think there is a special connection with some of the characters and I, in that I can connect to them and relate with them at the same time. I rememeber going through a dark time in my life when I first played VII all the way through, and my emotional connection to the story kinda helped me make it through my own battles. If that sounds weird... sorry.

Ummm...better?

Normally I would agree with you that "better" is way too vague of a term. However, in this case, since FFVII is my favorite game and FFVIII is my least favorite, it's not even a point of discussion for me. lol Final Fantasy VII wins by a ton. I would post an explanation but basically bring up any single point of the game and I'd hand the win to FFVII... so it'd just be a waste of breathe.

Then why vote? And to those who seem particularly bitter about someone voting for VIII, please stop right now. I don't see why it is such a crime these days. I chose VIII. Ok, the characters were the most boring bunch in the world, and I'd like to kill every single one of them off, but at least they're not overrated like the majority of the FF cast. Cloud, Vincent, Aeris, to name but a few. Hmm..I like Zell somewhat. Putting it down to martial arts. VII had no interesting sidequests. Chocobo breeding - could never get into it. Defeating the weapons, finding this KOTR summon - none of these things made go "Awesome!". The Materia system, incredibly basic, and sometimes..annoying. Say I wanted to equip several summons to a character - didn't appreciate the reduction in HP hmph. Story and music, beautiful stuff, though the soundtrack bores me now. FFVIII has a far better world - graphically, some places looked sensational. Ulti's castle, Esthar, FH - so much more to choose from. Junctioning - second best battle system to me. Yes, I did get bored occasionally drawing magic, but it was worth it when I could junction something like..100 Ultima's to my attack <3. Funnily enough, I managed well enough without it on my first playthrough - I also never used the Boost button. Glad I remembered those things second time around. Sidequests? A good few, ones that tied in with the story more, and the journey to find Odin and Bahamut were one hell of a ride for me. The card game - man, this really did test your abilities once you got to space. This also had a great ending. Not because I wanted to see Squall and Rinoa tongue each other..but because it was more fulfilling overall, compared to other endings I have witnessed before. I'm done~

Why vote? not sure. I guess I wanted to state my opinion. I guess I should've said that I've seen FFVIII but still liked 7 better. Don't know if that'll count though.

What I meant was..why vote for one game, when you've not played the other? =P Opinions are always welcomes, just makes more sense to vote when you've had experience with both ;0

If you've seen 8 in some format, then it does make sense, but how much of it have you seen? Just out of interest. :)

7 was really better than 8. It was cause of the story it had. FF8's story didn't really add up to 7, even though it did have some better battle functions. But 7 overall was really fun.
