I just started playing the FF II remake for the PSP & have been spending long periods of time leveling up new spells as I buy them. I am hoping to get some advice or insight from some people who played this game as to their approach to the magic system. i.e. did you buy & level all spells or did you find you only really used/needed a few to make it through the game. I am hoping there are only a few essentials that I need to focus on, as this leveling of all of them is very time consuming.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or adivce,

You don't need to level them all up. Have about three buffs, blink and two others, Esuna and Cura, and a couple of offensive spells. It is possible to get Holy as soon as you get the canoe so you can do that if you like. But my advice is to buy a lot of ethers and continually use up the characters' MP and then use an ether to restore it, instead of saying using it and up and waiting untill you get to an Inn.

Its true, I found out staying at the inn to restore magic is not good, as the price keeps going up. Its now like 3 or 400.00 per night at a town I was leveling outside of.

I have my canoe, how do I get holy?

There's only a few spells that you really NEED to have to complete the game comfortably.

Cure is obviously going to be the main staple of your magic use.

Life. I recommend that you don't level this as it just costs more MP each level. Just use it as you need you.

Berserk as it helps to raise the strength of your physical fighters.

Haste, when double with berserk, makes for a deadly combo.

Teleport. A must have. Gets you out of any dungeon in the blink of an eye and when

leveled up, can be an instant KO to your enemies.

Drain. Handy to heal yourself whilst dishing out damage. It's a bit crap at first though.

Osmose. MP recovery. <3

Esuna. Once you get access to Esuna, Bashuna is pointless.

and Blink. It helps evasion. Very handy.

And there's a few, non-essential but extremely handy spells too.

Fire, Thunder, Blizzard, Scourge, Protect, Shell, Aura, Flare, Toad and Warp.

Ultima is handy too but only if you level up every attribute of your character. Firion is usually the character that people have versed in all weaponry. You can get Holy too if you really want but these are the ones I plan to be focusing on now I've picked the game back up.

AS for leveling my spells. I probably try to level them a couple of times when I get them and then set myself little checkpoints to level them up further so I can make use of the dungeons in the process.
