You've spent hours fighting the hardest boss in the game, and you know you're close. He can't possibly have more than a few hundred more HP. You've got this in the bag! But then, out of nowhere, he hits you with the most badass bomb diggity attack and totally creams your party.

Damn.

So what's the consolation prize? Some lame-ass screen with the giant words "Game Over" plastered across it.

But, if you had to choose, which would you pick? And why?

Unfortunately, I couldn't get pics for the other titles. If somebody feels like hunting them down and posting them, please be my guest.

So once again, which is your fav and why?

EDIT: I'd also like to open discussion on whether or not you like funny game over screens or more serious ones. I remember some of the older titles having game over screens that depicted the character sprites performing comical actions. Do you like serious scenes or comedic ones?

I don't really remember any gameover screens from FF...but...

I do remember the gameover screen on GOW2. I played it on God mode the first time through and every time you die big red words "you are dead" go across the screen. When you die too many times in the same spot, they'll add insult to injury by saying something along the lines of "maybe this is too difficult" then offer you the option to change the difficulty down to easy permanently. I died like 184 times my first time through...the game keeps track of your death stat lol.

But for FF i'll vote for VI since that's the only one I have some remembrance of. I think your character goes from standing, then kneeling then it goes game over or something. Died a couple times on the Mage Tower due to the guys at the top who cast Merton. Eventually used the Moogle Charm to get to the top since grinding is out of the question for me.

I love VIII's Game Over screen, it's always struck me as the most poignant.
Just beautiful. It's pretty rare I get game-overs, so it's a big deal when I do, but at least there's a nice Game Over screen to look at while I rage for a few minutes.

Final Fantasy game over screens never really stuck out much to me. A lot of games game over screens didn't. About the only memorable game over screen for me wasn't from a Final Fantasy game, it was from Resident Evil. The whole character falling to the ground and big blood letters saying, "You died." stating the obvious and such. I'd always go, "No shit?" and continue the game. Oh yeah and Metal Gear Solid where the guy over the codec is screaming your name.

Speaking of Metal Gear Solid, XIII game over screen reminds me of that game. But I like VIII and IX screens from looking at those pictures.

I'm going to go for the FFXIII one, although FFVII was a very close second. I love the music that plays in the FFVII screen, a real sense of loss and frustration, which is quite fitting.

XIII's is nothing special really, it just contained that magic "retry" button. FFX needed one of those, bloody Yunalesca.

I like IX's the most because of the music it plays. Cheating? maybe. By the way, can someone please describe to me what's in the game over screen of IX? I can't make it out. I see a crown or some kind, a sword? a camera? the fuck? WHAT AM I LOOKING AT? still nice tune though.

I think it's steiner's sword, zidane's dagger and garnet's pendant hanging over them both.

I'm actually partial to the FFVIII screen to be honest. It's funny - I didn't realize until a long while after just what was exactly on the screen. I saw the gunblade and feather, but I thought there was a piece of glass stuck in the ground :lew:

But yeah, after I realized that it was a broken gunblade, that really stuck with me. The main character's weapon broken is pretty much the signal to the end >_<

I think VIII was the best

Whenever I lost and saw the gunblade broken in two and the white feather I thought it was cool it alway's make's me think of the opening scene where Squall and Seifer are fighting and you see Rinoa with a white feather the two thing's represent them so I think that VIII game over screen was the simplest but the best because they had two thing's that represented the two main character's of the game just lying on the ground. I actually think seeing the broken gunblade made me try harder rather than just seeing swords stuck in the ground or just the words Game Over.

I'd say Final Fantasy IX on the sole basis that it's my favourite Final Fantasy title anyway. Furthermore, I think out of the screenshots given I think it would be easier for a non-Final Fantasy player to link that game over image back to the actual game and at a wild guess could probably say "that's someone from the game" the others, I think are too "general" or too "specific" to the game. Personal view.

Final Fantasy X had the best game over music in my eyes, so I'll give it that.

XIII is my favourite game over screen. Cause it has a retry button!!! :D
but VIII is the prettiest! :)

I like VII's the best. It gives you that feeling like you're playing a movie game. As it shows a what looks like a movie reel broken in half. It's quite thought provoking.

FFVIII is like a stab in the head to me!:rage:

SOME BITCH MONSTER BROKE MY GUNBLADE!!!

Its not likely that it would break, more likely Sqaull would just drop the weapon instead
but the broken gunblade does idealise absolute failure, the whole idea of not just going to the weapon store to buy another Gunblade all so comes in to it.

Coz its a unique weapon and stuff..........and its not easy to replace........really.
