The thread dealing with things that annoy you inspired me to create this one.

I might be in the minority here, but how many of you have a distaste for Facebook, Twitter, or other various social media sites? Now I'm aware they're useful in certain situations for various reasons; however, based on what I've experienced, they serve mostly as tools for people to indulge their self-obsession. CONSTANT status updates on the most mundane life events. Constant photo uploads ranging from selfies to food pics to pics of yesterday's bowel movements.

Hey, this song has lyrics that kinda mirror something I'm going through right now. Better post it and pray that I get some likes so it doesn't become blatantly apparent that I've posted nothing more than filler to my timeline.

Why shouldn't there be a way for me to air all my thoughts, opinions, meals, outfits, and... anything else I can possibly come up with to remind my friends why I'm pretty much a big deal?

...BUT! Maybe you love social media. Maybe there's something in all of this that I'm currently too closed-minded to appreciate. I'm cool with being enlightened, so please share regardless of your opinion.

I think social media is such a powerful tool that is entirely misused. It has made the global community so much more accessible, and with smartphones we have that community in our pockets at all times and are constantly connected. We can so easily find out what is happening in the local news in some small town in the middle of a country on the other side of the world if we wanted, and social media allows us to share and spread these things so effectively. It's also a massively powerful marketing tool because of this connectivity, and it has been utilised very well for that in the past for the most part.

However we use it for the complete wrong purposes, and social media is instead mostly used to fuel egos and brag.

I have a Facebook page myself but honestly I hardly use it at all. I gave it a try and found that I simply didn't care about the social media scene and promptly ignored it. I've tried using it for my art and such like but I didn't find it that efficient; it was far too time consuming.

Twitter to me is entirely pointless from an individual point of view. It's nice for groups or events maybe but again, I'm not that bothered. I've never had an account with twitter and judging by what I've seen of it I don't feel any real loss.

Since, people like to stay connected and enjoy talking about themselves and their lives I say "More power to them", but it's not for me and I don't really see the attraction.

Maybe it speaks more about your friends and their attention seeking than the state of social media. I don't seem to have these problems; and when I do it's not too difficult to rectify. Unfollow or delete.

Social media is a customisable news feed - Twitter especially. Social media allows me to keep up with my friends I can't see as much as I'd like anymore. Can't see the bad in that.

Of there's that of course. Anything I see that really annoys me, I either remove or just ignore because it's simply not worth it. I was meaning in the grander scheme of things, and not on a small personal level

I have a Facebook.

I dislike the same things as you in the OP, but that doesn’t have to be what Facebook is used for. I rarely ever update my Facebook so I don’t fill my page with mundane things or ridiculous things.

Instead I mainly use it to keep track of people I know. I don't exactly communicate with many people directly (so I'm not from the camp of people who delete friends that haven't spoken to them on Facebook for a few months, and therefore feel unloved have to cry themselves to sleep, etc). I simply just like to see if people are still alive, etc, and be reassured that they are living happy(ish) lives. I've seen people I knew at school (or knew elsewhere in former days) who have now got partners, or married, or have children, or are doing interesting things. It's just quite nice to see these updates. That sort of thing genuinely interests me.

I’ve also ‘liked’ a number of pages which post interesting updates from time to time such as online articles on the subjects of classics, history, astronomy, etc.

I try and avoid the silly stuff if I can, although the silliest page that I ‘liked’ was probably the one where a guy was going to name his son Batman if he received enough likes. But after all of that ended his page was taken over and he ended up posting random stupid links nearly every day. :argor:

So yeah, I have Facebook but I hardly do much with it myself. I'll use it to see what people I know are doing, but they themselves will likely know very little about myself and my activities. If anything, I should probably put more up, but I'm simply not in the habit of it and at this stage in my life I'm hardly settled enough for it.
