Euro 2008

Haha, Robben scored as I was opening it. Coupet should not have let that get past him really. It won't be like Holland to lose on purpose though. They're going to want to avoid defeat at all costs to keep up their momentum really.

I know it's obviously very unlikely that the Dutch would lose on purpose, I just keep thinking of Euro 2004 where a win in their final game would put Italy through, unless Denmark and Sweden drew 2-2 in their game...which is exactly what happened with a last-minute equaliser XD - not deliberate of course but it was pretty cruel on Italy.

Czech Republic v Turkey - astonishing game, terrific ending, sheer madness. Loved it! Felt sorry for the Czechs though.

That's probably the shock of the tournament so far. I don't think I've ever seen Petr Cech make a mistake like he did for the second goal. I think it's slightly over shadowing Switzerland's win over Portugal too. I know Portugal didn't play a full strength team, but it's still a big win for the Swiss. Shame they went out after that.

Onto the quarter-final stage :)

Portugal v Germany
Croatia v Turkey
Spain v Italy
Netherlands v Russia

I'm tipping Portugal, Turkey, Italy and the Netherlands to go through. But I suck at predictions so :neomon:

I fancy the Germans over Portugal really. Despite their slow start, they're still one of the favourites and I think they'll pick up their game for such a big match as that.
Croatia v Turkey is pretty much the pick of the round, I think. Slaven Bilic has been a great manager so far, and I think they'll get through. Turkey never really look like a tournament-winning side to me.
I'll pick the Spanish to beat Italy too. Italy are an aging side, and from Spain's start they should have the edge (didn't see tonight's game, mind). Villa and Torres up front will probably teat Italy's defence apart.
And I think Holland v Russia is the easiest pick there. Like Turkey, Russia aren't a tournament-winning team. They did well to qualify ahead of Sweden I suppose, but they aren't good enough to beat Holland.

I doubt anyone thought Denmark and Greece were tournament-winning teams either, even after both got through the group stage in 1992 and 2004. Not that I think that Turkey and Russia will win Euro 2008.

When the going gets tough, Spain get knocked out of these tournaments. I think their notoriously fragile nature will rear its ugly head against Italy.

Good call on the Germany v Portugal game Juliet :) - Germany took advantage of some terrible set-piece defending from Portugal. Great game overall.

1 out of 4 so far. Probably the best game so far that I've seen. 3-2 was probably a fair result in the end, and I could see Portugal possibly even stealing an equaliser at the end if they hadn't been a bit too eager to get shots off. A pretty good performance by Lehmann, I thought.

Did any1 watch the QF game between Turkey and Croatia earlier? It started at 2.45 am here in Malaysia but I only watched the 1st half (too tired! :D)...

But it was another shock as Croatia exited the Euro 2008... Turkey beat them 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw... That alone was another stunner as Croatia scored at the 119th minute, only for the Turks to equalize a MINUTE later!

Anyway, I'm still hoping that Yuna & my prediction for our eventual champions to be the Netherlands will come true... But Russia, coached by Guus Hiddink, will not be easy meat and thats for sure!

OH, that was probably the most exciting game thus far. Too bad the Croatian goalkeeper couldn't keep the ball out of the net in PK.

I'm picking Spain to go through this round over Italy, though it could go 50/50. :D

The Croatia game was pretty bland, I thought. Particularly after the Portugal v Germany match on Thursday. Neither team were really getting the final cutting ball in like previously. I felt really sorry for the Croats though, they've really impressed me this tournament and Turkey have made it to the semi final by leading for a total of 2 minutes in four games. I just don't feel they deserve it. But in the end, I think the pressure of spot kicks got the best of Modric and Rakitic. Pletikosa seemed really poor at them too.

I'm gonna say 2-0 to Spain for tonight. Going forward, Italy haven't been good at all, whereas Spain have looked the deadliest team this year on that front.

Tonight's game is Netherlands v Russia, Italy v Spain is tomorrow.

But I will say again, Spain always tend to crumble when they play these big games, and Italy have been better than their narrow escape through the group stage implies. My one worry for Italy is they are missing some key players. But I'll still take their big game know-how over Spain's 'this will be our year, honest!' any day.

Anyone can fill me with the match between Netherlands and Russia? I can't watch it because I have a password on my TV D:
EDIT: nvm once I opened it the Russian scored a goal =D
