Hello. I am playing FFVII for the first time and I have reached 'Game Over' twice at the fight with Dyne. I've looked at a walkthrough, and I think I could probably do it right next time, but I'm wondering if maybe this means I'm doing something wrong or misunderstanding something, since this is in fact the first RPG I've ever played. I have Barret at level 20, and he has a max HP of 736 I think. I equipped him with Fire2 before the battle, as well as cure, but I couldn't cure Barret quick enough before Dyne killed him.

And a related question. Barret is on limit level 1 at the moment, with two choices for his limit attack. If I wanted to get him to the next limit level, do I have to use the second limit attack repeatedly (Mindblow I think it's called), or just either one?

You don't have to use the second attack repeatedly as far as I remember, infact I never used mid blow so I'm pretty sure you don't have to

I just always went in making sure I had cure equipped. Cant remember what else I had but I was pretty much just full on attack anyway, try to have Barrets limit charged before you go in and make sure you cure whenever he uses that attack that I cant remeber the name of that takes off a fair bit of HP .....molotov coctail or somthing.......?

As long as you have enough HP to withstand that attack you should be fine just doing regular attacks
 
Just dont rush it. Attack and heal at a steady pace. Dont be too eager to attack him. A good think you could do is to atack him with the gun to save mp for cure. Another thing that helps are the dmg items that you should have (like molotov and bolt plume and eteceteras).
You said barret has 736, so how much damage is he doing to you per strike?
 
For gaining the Level 2 Limit, just use Big Shot over Mind Blow - the latter does very little 'good' in battle.

As for Dyne, you really shouldn't have any difficulty at this point. He was hitting me for about 70HP damage per hit, and I was averaging at around 900-1000 HP total for Barret. Ensure that you have Cure at the ready, and just focus on attacking unless you feel you have enough MP for the odd Fire 2 or so. Maintain a suitable amount of HP, and should breeze through his 1,200 HP.
 
He was doing 140 points of damage with the needle gun, but sometimes, somehow, he got two consecutive moves - needle gun and then S-mine, totalling nearly 300 points of damage, which I wasn't expecting.

I've got past it now, after getting Barret to limit level 2. Thanks everyone for your help.
 
Don't use the second limit it's crap actually, try using the first one, that will help you a lot actually because when I beat him I had around 600 HP. D:
 
i use a fairly good tactic, it requires alot of MP but it works everytime i have fought this boss, Give Barret a cure materia and thats it, everyturn have barret cure himself (or if he is at Full HP attack) and after X number of Dyne's attacks Barret has his limit ready and then unleash his limit. Repeat this process until Dyne is dead, and if you run out of HP, either potions or ethers, your choice
