There are many elements of Final Fantasy that have been missing recently:
Great music (As in ALL of the music is great, rather than just oen or two tracks)
Airships that you can fly
World Map
Brilliant character development
Great map design.
Turn taking or Active Time Battle systems. NOT running around and switching / not switching between characters... Would be fine for a spin off, but not for FF thanks.
In my opinion the best FF games were FF4-9, as they had all of these perfectly.
FFX was still good, with excellent characters and beautiful Hindu based design, but the absence of a world map, flying airships and the fact that you literally walked a path the whole way pulled it down a lot.
FF12, with the absence of excellent music (I mean the music was ok at times, but most of it was forgettable and close to what you would expect forma ny game, not a FF) was alot further down. FF12 is my least favourite so far. Story was ok and everything, but they didn't carry it out in the true FF manner I'm afraid. The lack of the usual battle system and lack of Nobuo quality music added to my dissapointment.
