Some kids movies are just down right scary/disturbing.

The other night I was watching Pinocchio with my nephew and niece. I used to love this movie and thought the story was cool. Watching it now makes me uncomfortable.

First, this one isn't too terrible, but towards the begining where Pinocchio walks away with the two "strangers" instead of going to school. Yeah it's not horrible but it made me uncomfortable. I could not see that flying in a kids movie today.

Then later, the awful part, when the boys are on Pleasure Island and turn into donkeys. It's not so much the transformation, but the fact that you never find out what happends to them. We see them getting loaded up into crates and will either be sent to the salt mines or the circus. During that scene, we see some of the kids/donkeys crying about how they want to go home to their parents. No one ever comes to save them and worse, the coachman gets away with it! The whole thing bothered me so much even after the movie ended that I had to mentally rewrite the story where Pinocchio saves the kids and the fairy turns them back to children and they go back to their parents. Forget Frollo and Maleficent, the coach man is by far the scariest and most evil Disney villian!

And before anyone says it, yes I know, the actual story of Pinocchio is much more twisted.

And random, but you see the kids on Pleasure Island drinking, smoking, gamboling, destroying things. You'd never see that in a kids movie today XD

I remember being afraid of the Brave Little Toaster. There was a part where a bunch of appliances committed suicide? The last time I watched this movie I was probably 5 or 6 so maybe I am remembering it wrong?

Any kids movies you find disturbing either now or from when you were a child?

The Great Mouse Detective. Not the entire movie mind you. Just the bat. That fucker scared the shit out of me when I was younger. Especially in the beginning when he slams his head through the toy shop window and has that giant grin. Gave me fuckin' nightmares. But I still love that movie. Probably one of the more forgotten Disney classics.

Hmm, pinocchio was very scary to me. Add to that I had this big plush too that would just sit in my closet, scaring me during the night. OMGawd.

The toaster dude was pretty scary too. But I fell asleep during the movie, so I only saw him for a very little while.

Hmm... Yeah pinocchio is easily the scariest to me. That friggin nose was scary, everything about that movie is creepy.

Pinocchio - For every reason posted above...

The only other thing that stands out in my mind is Mickey and the Beanstalk...

For those of you who have not seen this I have a video for you... And those that HAVE seen it, know what I am talking about...

What the fuck was THAT!?
Seriously! How fucked up was that!? What was that show even about!? 8(

Why would someone even MAKE that!?!?

My thoughts exactly. Was that seriously for children? :hmmm:

I always found Balloonland to be kind of creepy. Something about a pincushion going around murdering balloons is just downright morbid.

I also think Pinocchio because the old dude who created him was CLEARLY a closeted paedo!!
Fantasia scared me too, not sure why, probably because it was so dark and stuff

This one takes the cake. I believe they actually banned this.

For some reason this looks really familiar to me; I'm almost positive that I've seen it a long time ago. And honestly it doesn't creep me out that much. I just found it sad...the poor little clay people :sad3:

Haha I also found Pinocchio very creepy to me! I also thought it was very sad...

But when I was young my mom showed me this creepy...weird...independent short film. It was Polish, called "The Wooden Esophagus." What makes it creepier is that nothing comes up when you google it :sad2: It was a doll house, all silent, with creepy music. And it symbolised "The murder of happiness by Dictatership". (That's what my mom said anyways) We still have it somewhere around the house, and I may watch it sometime to refresh my memory, since I really can't remember a thing! She showed me when I was very young, even though it was seriously weird. I remember my mom saying it was connected to that short film "The Red Balloon" somehow, but I have no idea how. Maybe story elements, or someone in the production. Man now I'm gonna google the night away trying to find a page about it! It's seriously weird.

edit: Where is my signature? :ahmed:

double edit: Okay so I found it! It's NOT called the Wooden Esophagus, the Wooden Esophagus is part of the set. So these weirdos called the Quay Brothers made silent films (no dialogue, just really creepy music). And the one my mom showed (she said she didn't show me all of it, but most) was called "The Street of Crocodiles". Now just google images that, and look at the images :hmph: That's some CREEPY stuff! The set is a doll house with all these creepy rooms and it's all very symbolic. Omg creepy memories :sad3: Here watch this excerpt. It's not even the creepiest part of the film. Creepy creepy creepy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNOfsJz4TjA

AAAAAAAND now I realized that this does not relate to the thread because it wasn't even a child's movie :hmph:! But that Mark Twain thing reminded me of it. Well whatever...

BUT that one part in Snow White used to creep me out, when she runs from the huntsman and is in the forest. There's all these spooky things in the forest that just was a little dark. That was a bit scary when I was little...

I made it all the way! Honestly I was enjoying it and laughing until The Mad Doctor came... He was really the only creepy thing for me...

I THINK this is what inspired the first level of Epic Mickey. I KNOW The Mad Doctor was one of the main villains in that game so this vid was VERY neat to see!

^ I think it's because I'm a huge animal lover and seeing a animal like that, even though he's animated it's just very scary for me. And there is sicko's out there like the Mad Doctor that do harm animals... maybe not like that, but they do chain them up and abuse them.

But thanks to you I was able to watch it all the way through as well. It was nice but.... never again.
:XD:

I watched the Cobweb Hotel one too and that was very disturbing, very disturbing...it's a clever and imaginative cartoon from a adults point of view, but yeah... not for kids.

I hope I helped a bit! lol

But yes, seeing The Cobweb Hotel NOW is STILL disturbing, but now I realize that it might not be appropriate for some kids (My cousin was deathly afraid of that damn spider but I was able to watch it just fine when we were kids) I NOW realize how twisted the whole concept of this cartoon REALLY is...

^ I can't seem to give you rep till I give some more around till other people. Sorry about that.

Yup... going to have some serious nightmares about spiders tonight....* shudders *

Once you found disturbing facts about the kiddie shows you like, you will never see it the same way again. That happened to me when I watch some cartoons that I thought was made for kids.

That actually didn't bother me at all to watch. XD It was a little disturbing at the end but maybe it is scary for a little kid or something.

For some reason I could never watch Fantasia as a kid. I also thought the witch in Wizard of Oz was creepy too, but I don't really think that counts as a kid movie. I also could not watch Dumbo when I was little because of this scene:

Dear Lord I think Dumbo's pink elephants has possibly scarred me deeply. I remember watching it as a child in a mournful silence. I didn't understand it very well but I remember having an icy chill :P

The whole pink elephant thing was just a big drug trip... THAT'S disturbing for a kid's show/movie.

Dumbo was tormented and made fun of for his ears. His mother arrested after protecting him from abuse. Then Dumbo going through other diff shit... It's not a happy movie. It's one of the most depressing movies there is...
Then the end happened where he finds out that the thing he was made fun of for (ears) were a special gift.

I STILL cry my eyes out when "Baby of Mine" plays when Dumbo's mom is in jail holding onto Dumbo. It's the most depressing part in that movie.

Actually, that one reminds me of a more recent Disney short from 1995 called Runaway Brain.
