so I was playing this one day, and noticed that the nations of this game reminded me of the nations of the world. I'll give you my main 2.

1. Balamb- small Island country, one town worth mentioning.
=
Japan- Small Island country, One City everyone knows.
2. Galbadia- Large mainland country ruled by hated president.
=
USA- Large Mainland country, currently ruled by hated president.

Enlighten me with your thoughts.

i dunno,, maybe, maybe not, your idea might fit the ff8 nation but that doesn't mean square really picture it to the real world.. some thoughts maybe,,

As much as Square take influence from Mythology, they also do indeed seem to take influence from the real world too. Infact if you look back at most FF stories, you could probably link them with alot of our history and world affairs.

Ahh, interesting point there. That could be a possibility, yes. It sure makes sense to me anyway.

I can't seem to relate Balamb and Japan together. lol.
They just have nothing in common..

Btw...I hated FFVIII's boring assed world map. =x

Also because FFVIII was more of a political (as well as romantic) real looking locations had to be used so the gamer got the impression the developers wanted them to get.

It was too realistic. There was no fantasy in this game; it was all sci fi.
The only "romantic" aspect in the game was Ultimecia's floating castle.

I'm not saying that it was intentional, I'm just saying it does. The Hated prez didn't get into power untill 2000, and the game was made in 1999.

lol. i got to agree with that guy. america does not invade other countries that have done nothing wrong. the only comparison that i think can be made is that of the esthar to the USSR. but there isnt that much of a similarity. anyway the hated president is killed and replaced by one that they like even though they shouldnt. anyway the president is a dictator, not freely elected like george bush, or george clinton who was president at that time. balamb is a small town that is not very important in the game.
you say that they are your main two. so presumably you have others?

Eh... Not really.. But when I play a Final Fantasy game, I try to block the real world out of my head, so that I can use my imagination and storyline to paint my own picture.

Similarities

I really can't see the connection. But I'll give it to you that Galbadia is a close cousin to the US. All that the US does anymore is try and muscle in on someone else's buisness.

And that's all I'll type. If I get on this rant, I'll get banned from the forums.

But hey, good eye. I'm glad someone other than myself sees some of the strange little things that the programmers try and sneak in every now and then.

Well by that line of thoughts i would relate Japan more with Esthar city because their much more technological advance and have a different culture...

Galbadia similar to U.S.A well...maybe just like Galbadia, America does impose their power a bit to much....so yeah i can see the similarity!

well FF VIII, was made in that time of reality and i woldent doute the creatures took stuff from the real world and made fun of them as jokes.

I dont agree with that. Iraq as a nation had done nothing wrong but America attacked them. Iran has done nothing wrong but theyre going to attack them. I think that in modern sci fi and fantasy the USA is a very common inspiration for corrupt and power mad governments/countries. I wouldn't be surprised if Galbadia was loosely based on the US. I definately think Esthar is more like Japan than Balamb is.

And also, everyone knows G W Bush cheated his way into power, he wasnt freely elected;)

Gotta say you're a little mistaken on the Iraq thing. They had threatened us before, but I think everyone knows that W was tying up daddy's loose ends. Why else would anyone go to the extremes that he did.

But let's keep the politics outta the threads. Otherwise, the whole Forum'll burn from all the flamers.

But as for Japan being the basis of Esthar, think about the illusion-shield. Japan was quite a closed society, but that was a while in the past. Couldn't Esthar be closer to China? Very secretive, very big. They just changed the political structure to hide it....

Gee thx now ive got to go to the middle of the pacific to see whts like the Deep Sea Reseach Facility but yes i agree the layout is the same but the actual countrys politics are slightly different.. oh well Esther is a cool idea....................
on antartica?

not exactly, FF7 looked a tad bit more so if north continant was at bottom to be atartica then it lookes reslly close but flipped ex:
