Diablo III developer diary discusses pre-alpha crunch

In the latest Diablo III developer diary, the team discusses the satisfaction of getting Battle.net community features in place in the weeks leading up to alpha testing.

The video, filmed almost a year ago, shows Jay Wilson, Christian Lichtner and Jason Regier discussing Diablo III’s development just as it began to really kick off; a few weeks later, the game would be in a playable alpha state. The three mention the excitement of bringing such a big game to fruition and call development a “race against the clock” – quite a big clock, though, as this dates back to about one year ago.

This is the second diary in this series released so far; see the first one here. Diablo III is due next month.

Thanks, Evil Avatar.

Diablo III’s Monk featured in latest spotlight video, beta ends May 1

Blizzard has released a new class video, this time it delves into what make the Monk so special. These reclusive, holy warriors have been honing their bodies for years in order to become “weapons of righteousness” to become a weapon “of the gods themselves.” You can find out more on the Monk class below. Blizzard has also announced the beta will end on May 1 to prepare for the game’s launch on May 15.

Diablo III beta goes open for all this weekend only

Blizzard’s announced the beta for Diablo III will open up to everyone with a Battle.net account this weekend only, following claims it had done so earlier in the week.

diablo-iii-2.jpg

Beginning today at 12pm PST (8pm BST tonight), the beta will be available to everyone with a currently active Battle.net account until next Monday, April 23 at 10am PST (6pm BST).

Blizzard says players will help stress test the game ahead of its release next month.

In the beta, you’ll be able to team up with friends and play all five of the game’s classes up to level 13. You can download the client here right now and be ready for when it does go live.

Internet reports suggested the beta had opened up earlier in the week, but this was down to what Blizzard called a bug at the time.

Now, it is open. Go nuts.

Diablo III launches on May 15.

Canada – Pre-order Diablo III, score a sweet steelbook case

If there weren’t enough reasons to move to Canada (public health care, maple syrup, the entirety of Quebec), this steelbook case for Diablo III is the period at the end of the immigration forms.

The fancy case is available to those who pre-order through Canadian online retailer Future Shop, purveyor of exciting stuff.
Despite my strapline joke, a similar deal is likely to surface outside Canada, so check with your local retailers before deciding where to drop your cash.

Diablo III launches on May 15,but is in a limited time open beta right now. I didn’t try it but my entire online network dissolved into a chorus of praise.

Diablo III’s Witch Doctor given the trailer treatment

The latest Diablo III hero spotlight is shining directly onto the shadowy Witch Doctor, exposing this murky figure to the cold, hard light of scrutiny and really laboured analogies. Just watch it.

The Witch Doctor won’t be detailed on the game’s Heroes Rise website until tomorrow, so this trailer’s all we’ve got.

If you’re interested in Diablo III’s other classes, go forth and check out the Barbarian, Demon Hunter, and Monk. The Wizard is yet to be trailered.

The much anticipated dungeon crawler takes us back to the underworld from May 15.

Diablo III TV spot promises “Evil is Back”

As the trailer notes, Diablo III is now just over two weeks away. If you’re not yet sold on Blizzard’s much-anticipated dungeon crawler, I am uncertain which rock you’ve set up camp underneath.

Blizzard announces Global Play feature for Diablo III

Blizzard has announced a Global Play feature for Diablo III which will allow you to play online with your buddies no matter which region they reside in due to region-free servers.

d3wizard.jpg

There are only a few few restrictions when using Battle.net’s new Global Play functionality, with regions broken down as follows:

  • The Americas – For players in the US, Canada, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia.
  • Europe – For players in the European Union, Eastern Europe, Russia, Africa, and Middle Eastern countries such as Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
  • Asia – For players in South Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

Players will create characters and play in their “home” region, determined by where they live. Afterward, you can go into Global Play and switch to any of the other game regions via the in-game options menu, before or after you log in to the game.

Characters, items, and friends lists do not transfer across regions so when playing on a different region’s server, you will have to create characters and friends lists specifically for that region and will have to use the gold-based auction house for that region as well.

In addition, players will only have access to the real-money auction house when playing in their “home” game region. That means that, for characters outside of your home region, items “cannot be bought or sold in any real-money auction house.”
Awesome.

In other news, Blizzard has also posted a guide to the Auction House through here. The gold-based auction house launches alongside the game, while the real-money auction house will go online approximately one week after launch.

Those who sell items for real money will have to give Blizzard a $1 to 15% cut of profits as outlined through the FAQ. The firm will also take 15% should you use PayPal or you can deposit funds into your Battle.net account to use in the game or through the purchase of future Blizzard items.

More information is through the link, and the game’s out May 15.

Diablo III Inferno mode twice as difficult as internal testers approved

When Blizzard tested Diablo III’s Inferno difficulty, it ran detailed testing to ensure it found an appropriate challenge level – and then threw that data straight out the window in favour of turning the dial all the way up.

20120507diablo3.jpg

“Internally, we had this super hardcore test group – we’ve got a lot of hardcore players at Blizzard – that tested Inferno, and we got it to the point where they thought it was challenging enough,” Blizzard’s Jay Wilson told IGN.

“Then we doubled it. Because we knew, no matter how good we are, our players are gonna be better. We focussed on making that as difficult as we could make it.”

Wilson said the hardcore “can absolutely solo” Inferno, as the game scales depending on the number of players there are, but that multiple skilled players co-ordinating abilities will have an easier time of it.

“The ability to combine different classes together is one of the things that makes Inferno really interesting,” he noted.
Diablo III releases on May 15 for Mac and PC. Hit the link above for more tips on how to survive Diablo III’s ultimate difficulty, which is accessible only to level 60 players.

I have the WoW Annual Pass, which in addition to getting me into the Mists of Pandaria beta, allows me to download Diablo III for free. So I'mma be giving it a whirl when it launches next week. I played a couple hours of Diablo way back in the day, and it was enjoyable. I'm looking forward to trying this one on for size.

I saw a trailer for this and it looked really cool, so I was quite tempted to get it. It turns out I'd need to buy some fancy graphics card though, so I don't really want to splash out a further 100 or so shekels for one game

Diablo III director shut down discussions of perspective change

If the idea of a non-isometric game bearing the Diablo game fills you with horror and outrage, you’re not alone; the game’s director is right on board.

20120507diablo3_2.jpg

During Diablo III’s development, someone floated the idea of making a different kind of game to the two previous instalments, both isometric dungeon crawlers. Game director Jay Wilson told games.on.net he stomped on the suggestion before it grew legs.

“Very early on in the process we had some people who argued that we should not make the game isometric,” he said.
“That it would be better technology, more modern, if we made a third or first-person game.
“I really would have nothing of it.”

Wilson seem to emphasise that Diablo III’s perspective is one of the things that makes it unique.

“For me a camera is not a technology choice, there’s more than enough first and third-person games out there,” he said.

Diablo III releases on May 15. That’s only a small number of days away. Is your PC ready?

Diablo III has more voice acting than any other Blizzard game

Blizzard considered getting well-known actors in for Diablo III’s voice overs, but had to give up due to prohibitive costs.

20120508diablo3.jpg

“I don’t know the exact length of the final script, but it’s definitely got more voicework than any game Blizzard has ever made. By a lot,” game director Jay Wilson told MCV Pacific.

The size of the script had knock-on effects beyond increasing the budget for the writing department.

“I know that at one point we were talking to a well-known famous actor to play one of the characters and we decided not to because the number of lines was something like 25,000,” Wilson revealed.

“And the cost per session was reasonable, but the number of sessions we needed to do was kind of outrageous.”

Although Blizzard might have brought in a superstar for a smaller role, it didn’t seem worth it.
“With a role like that, can we really justify getting a well-paid famous person acting in that role?” the director said.

Diablo III comes out next week, OMGWTFBBQ.

Blizzard – Diablo III’s Auction house will streamline the trading process

Blizzard’s Jay Wilson has said Diablo III’s development team implemented the Auction house into the game because players like to trade for real money, and now they won’t have to do it outside the game anymore.

d3-wiz.jpg

Speaking with MCV
, Wilson said the idea came about when players were trading in-game Diablo II items for cash outside the game. Compound this with the fact players “want to buy items,” and you have yourself an Auction house inside D3 without the possibility of getting “ripped off.”

“I can’t tell you how many hardcore Diablo players I know who pay money for high-level items,” he said. “I also have a lot of friends who went to pay real money for in-game things and got ripped off. It’s a game about trading items; it’s a game where trading is the best path to getting the best items.

“But Diablo 2 didn’t facilitate trading at all, so in doing the Auction house we really want to facilitate trading, and we really wanted to embrace what players were doing, and what we knew players were going to do regardless of whether we did real money or not.

“We don’t really try to overly categorise out players. So if we think that a significant percentage of the player base wants to trade for real money, we’ll try to support that player base.”

Wilson said implementing the Auction house also facilitates trading without harmful effects, allowing the players to still work towards acquiring the items in the first place.

“It would be harmful for us to sell the best items in the game for real money – that could potentially be quite harmful in Diablo because now, we’re actually removing the impetus for why you play the game in the first place,” he said. “But if it’s facilitating trading, I think that’s very different because it still requires them to acquire the items by themselves.”

Wilson went on to say the team has plans to grow and support the game post-release, there are “some ideas,” in place but for now Blizzard isn’t ready to discuss it.

During its call to investors last night, Activision-Blizzard said Diablo III has set an all-time, worldwide pre-order record for Blizzard and today, Amazon announced the game was the most pre-ordered PC game in the retailer’s history – even surpassing StarCraft II and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm pre-orders.

Game’s out next week.

The system launches just after the game which comes out on Tuesday. More details here.

Diablo III Starter Edition and Guest Passes let you treat a friend

Tempt your friends into a lifetime obsession with phat loot by gifting them a free trial version of Diablo III.

20120314diablo3_2.jpg

Blizzard’s Diablo III Starter Edition is a special trial of the full RPG which includes all of Act I up to the Skeleton King, but has a level 13 cap, no access to the Auction House, and restricts matchmaking to other Starter Edition players.

Still, it’s a pretty sweet deal since it comes at a price of zero dollars – providing an existing player invites you in via Guest Pass. Every copy of Diablo III will include an unspecified number of Guest Passes for distribution among your nearest and dearest whose lives you’d like to derail.

30 days after Diablo III’s launch – that’s May 15, by the way, for Mac and PC – the Starter Edition will be unlocked for everyone.

Returning to Hell: Diablo III launches worldwide tonight

Just short of four years since its announcement at Blizzard’s Worldwide Invitational in Paris, Diablo III will finally launch worldwide from midnight tonight.

diablo-iii.jpg

Blizzard will launch Diablo III tonight at midnight worldwide.

The game was announced at the company’s Worldwide Invitational in Paris on Saturday, June 27, 2008 by Mike Morhaime. The last game, Diablo II, launched back in June 2000. Expansion Lord of Destruction launched the following June.

Tonight, Blizzard will celebrate Diablo III’s release with a series of worldwide events. In London, the official midnight launch will happen on HMV Oxford Street. Already, going by Twitter chatter, there are some people queueing up. To those doing so, we salute you.

Sam Clay will be attending the launch and an official launch event from Blizzard in London today for VG247.

Blizzard will also host an event alongside GameStop in Irvine, California – where the company’s HQ is based – from 8pm PST tonight that’ll include giveaways and dev appearances.

Other events being hosted include those in France, Germany, Sweden, Poland, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, and the region of Taiwan.

No stock for GAME AU, no refunds for pre-orders

One outlet that won’t be selling Diablo III tonight will be the Australian arm of GAME. After news of it going into administration emerged this morning, its now confirmed it won’t be selling the game and won’t be offering refunds to any pre-orders due to its current status.

“Due to the appointment of an administrator to our business this morning, it is with regret that I inform you all that our stores will not be receiving any stock of Diablo 3,” said the retailer in a text to pre-orders this morning.

“Because of this, we regrettably will be unable to fulfill any pre-orders. Also, we will be unable to refund any deposits paid towards a pre-order of Diablo 3. If you need any more info, please email customerrelations@game.com.au.”

Don’t expect many in the way of reviews come midnight, by the by: journalists have been locked out of the game until 12:01am, meaning we’re just as much in the dark with you lot.

After the release of D3 will come the potential console version. Blizzard’s said it’s currently experimenting with the game for consoles, but no official word has been made on if it’ll come or not.

The game’s launcher will tell the backstory of previous games as you install it. Once installed, the game’s intro will play.

Don’t expect to play it immediately, though: the gameplay servers won’t go live until 11pm BST tonight though, apparently.

Watch for more on Diablo III from Sam this evening. Maybe.

[h=1]Blizzard offers refunds on GAME Australia Diablo III pre-orders[/h] Those whose Diablo III pre-orders have fallen through thanks to GAME Australia’s stock issues can apply for a refund from Blizzard.

20120515diablo3.jpg

Blizzard has advised disappointed gamers to purchase a digital copy of Diablo III directly through Battle.net and then submit proof of a GAME Australia purchase by the end of June to receive a refund.

More information on how to take advantage of the offer will be released soon.

Not everyone who pre-ordered will need to take advantage of the scheme; Pricewaterhouse Coopers has advised the beleaguered retail chain will fulfill Diablo III pre-orders where possible, but cannot afford stock to meet demand completely.
“I regret that Diablo III isn’t available across the whole network of stores and to all customers who have pre-ordered,” joint administrator Kate Warwick said in a statement.

“However the stock on hand represents the total stock ordered prior to the appointment of Voluntary Administrators yesterday and unfortunately, there are insufficient funds on hand to purchase any additional copies.”

The administrators have reiterated that users who ordered in-store should check if stock has been allocated to them. Those who miss out are asked to visit GAME’s website to make a claim for refund – although under Australian laws, not all debitors are ensured compensation.

It is unclear how those who ordered through the website will be affected; yesterday, GAME advised that online orders would be fulfilled.

Diablo III is available now, for Mac and PC.

Here I bought Diablo 3 cdkey. Do you know this site? I think it is very cool!! Delivery is very quickly and I activated it to play my game!

err

anyway

for all of the hubub about the game not a lot of talk about it

I feel like a nerd playing this game. Every time I perform a Leap as a Barbarian, I'm reminded of that one episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy where Billy and Irwin were playing a game that seemed a lot like Diablo 3.

Still haven't finished it, still haven't settled on which class I want to play. Was playing Barb first, but got bored of it because of how easy the game was at first. Played a monk, got frustrated at the start of Act II when the sprint thing wouldn't root those dumbass wasp things and the obvious lack of ranged utility. Back to Barb, raped me some wasps, decided to play a Demon Hunter. I still revolve, but always enjoy playing the Demon Hunter.

Monk takes less damage than the barbarian, Barbarians remind me a lot of the current state of Warriors in World of Warcraft: crippled one trick ponies. Well, not that bad. A little bit better off, but not too terribly far. But really, just inferior in comparison to others. And maybe that is the flavor of Blizzard's Warrior classes - "not fotm". You can either A) do damage and die in a fire aoe spell that you get knocked and slowed into or B) take damage and take forever to kill everything.

But perhaps Barbarians are similar to World of Warcraft's Warriors in more ways than one, in the fact that they are a pain to play sometimes and in comparison to other classes, are much, much less (capable of even being) competitve.

Demon Hunter feels like a very comfortable place, safe from damage, able to easily escape, does stupid good damage. More importantly, most functional experience. Half the time Sprint and Leap will not even take you to your targets (7 year charge jump bug anyone?)

I always think of Garrus from the Mass Effect series whenever I play my DH. "It's not hard to find trouble. All I have to do is point my gun and shoot." and whenever i rapid fire in a narrow space "funneling all of those witless idiots into scope..."

also

Diablo 3 - How to get Controlled Fury Achievement
now with 100% shittier resolution, because windows movie maker is a pole smoker :elmo:

I have played every class so far except for Monk. Witch Doctor has been my favorite so far with pets to take most of the mob damage as I safely attack from afar.

The Normal difficulty seems to be easy enough, which I believe is what Blizzard was going for. They said that they want to make it accessible for causal gamers while appealing to a hardcore crowd as well. I've got as far as Act 2 in Nightmare mode and have noticed a considerable jump in difficulty. I haven't even attempted a hardcore character yet. With the game being out for almost 2 weeks now, I still feel like I have a lot to do before I grow tired of it.
