Agreed. I don't mind 2D graphics at all, especially pretty ones like that, but I can't stand ugly 3D. Somehow blocky, polygonal figures are so much more intolerable that shite 3D.
It's actually quite pathetic because they COULD do better. Lets take a moment to compare some free online games.
First, the obviously half-assed Runescape:

Third is Maple Story, it's 2D and animu but the sprites and environments are quite nice:

The only way I'd play that thing is if someone paid me to do it. Although I do know a guy who used to play it, I eventually talked him into playing Maple Story so he wouldn't fail quite so hard.

At least it has a lot more options of things to do. All WoW has is a bunch of fighting and it costs $15 a month. Leveling takes forever as well. The max level you can be is level 70.
As for other free MMORPGs, most just suck.
Great graphics is not everything. WoW's graphics take up too much memory.
The graphics have actually gotten better for monsters and NPCs... this isnt the best pic, but the Moss Giants have got updated. If you get into a battle with the update monsters, they actually look like they are fight and have awesome attacks.

Wow takes up about as much memory as a total war game. If you like to play the game, there's no reason space should be a problem unless you're computer has limited memory. Which wouldn't be the game's fault.
Also, compare wow's fighting system to Runescape's. Runescape's can barely be called a system. Runescape also has the nerve to charge you a fee to play the full game. If it was really completely free it'd be decent, but who wants to pay for that crap?
And there are many, many free mmorpg's that are better than runescape. I don't even really play mmorpg's but most of what I have played is better than runescape.
