So, as my title implies, I'm rather curious for some of your opinions. I've been a die-hard fan of the FF series since I first played VIII, and since then have played VII, IX, X, and XII. I've only beaten 7-8, just due to time constrains, and am currently in the process of playing 9. My question though, is what do you all think of walkthroughs? I hate using them on most games, but I feel that at times the FF games nearly require the use of one. With all of the secret items hidden throughout the game I get over whelmed. Heh, at times I get a bit paranoid, constantly wondering if I am missing something important that will be of use later in the game.

I am currently on Disc 3 of IX, and have mainly just tried to limit my use of a walkthrough to a check-list of items for each area, but even so I still feel... bad, I guess, for using one. I don't have large amounts of time to devote to the game, and it usually takes me a few weeks to finish one of the titles, so re-play is usually not an option, as I would much rather move on to a different title all together than try and gather meaningless things that will most likely be of complete use to me.

So, yes! What do you all do in situations like these?

I sometimes use them... Sometimes I want to complete a game on my own steam. I suppose it's a nice way to double-check what all you have before you leave an area, which is what I mostly use walkthroughs and strategy guides for.

Usually if I can't take it anymore I cheat. Before a boss battle or something I often run out of money when I need to buy some items. So then I go and look for them, if I don't then I'll still find some money during random battles.

I use them to make sure I get everything 100% on my first play-through because I usually only have time to play the game one time through completely anyway.

I never use it to figure out my way out of something or how to beat a boss since it does take away from the feel of the game, but I will use it to know when somethings coming up and if I'll miss it or not.

That actually is exactly what I wanted to hear. I don't have too much time as it is, and I hate feeling that I'm getting less from the game because I don't have the time to devote 120+ hours in to discovering every single nook and cranery for myself, most likely due to luck. I do agree though that using them for hints on bosses or where to go when lost is silly.

Thanks!! :)

I like to use walkthroughs, so I don't miss stuff. Part of the reason i like FFs is all the secret sub-quests which i would'nt know about without the guide. I do prefer to fight bosses using my own tactics though. :ninja:

I don't like to use walkthroughs at all. I mean if I get really stuck and have been at it for hours I'll pop online and look it up, but I think it ruins the gameplay for me. I've been able to beat every final fantasy without a walkthrough and even though I've missed probably a lot of important things, well, when I replay a game, then I'll use a walkthrough.

I never use them on my first play through, I'l just try to get what I can on my own - I do get really tempted sometimes especially if i'm lost and the guides sat looking at me waiting to be opened
I always use them on my second play thru just so I can get 100% because I know I will never find everything on my own

I refuse to use a walkthrough on my first play through. After I beat the game I'll often go back and use the walkthrough to get everything.

On the other hand, it's been difficult to find time to beat any of the games I've bought recently the first time 'round, let alone have time for a round two. I guess I wouldn't be too opposed to using the walkthrough for secrets and what not... but it might be hard, for me at least, not to look ahead where I don't want to be looking.

Meh, well since I really don't have time to do second play through, I typically use a walkthrough because of that reason alone. At first, I didn't like using them, but that was because I had more time in my hands back in the days.

Now, it's almost a must to use one in order to get the most of everything in a game.

I think my problem is being to impatient, I want to see whats going to happen in the story and get it completed as soon as I can without straying too much, I did in XII i couldn't help it but I know Iv missed ALOT. but annoyingly, I dont have as much time as I used to either.

Il get round to that 100% game eventually & use my guide........hopefully before XIII comes out :/

I usually try to play without, but as was said, sometimes it's almost necessary to have a walkthrough with me (not everybody can be a 1337 player or whatever). In some ways, it's kinda nice, since with a walkthrough it feels like you're able to explore every nook and cranny of a game... but it also takes some of the satisfaction out of doing things yourself. Yet, without a walkthrough, there's the chance of missing something that was really useful/cool, like an optional character.

My stance right now is to try to play through without, then play again with a walkthrough. But if there's time restraints, then I'd play mostly without, but peek at a walkthrough every now and then.
