Maximum torque: Crysis 3 locked for spring 2013 release

Crysis 3 will launch in spring 2013, EA said today, with the publisher calling the Crytek sequel the “first blockbuster shooter” of next year.

Crysis 3 will be the “first blockbuster shooter of 2013,” EA announced today after it jumped the gun last week. The game will release on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

“Crysis 3 is a thrilling mix of sandbox gameplay, advanced combat and hi-tech human and alien weaponry that shooter fans will love,” said Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli.

“Leveraging the latest CryENGINE technology, we’re able to deliver seven unique themes that offer stunning and visually loaded gameplay experiences. We cannot wait until people get their hands on the game.”

Crysis 3 takes place in 2047 in New York. Prophet from Crysis 2 has returned to the city, only to find it encased in a Nanodome by Cell Corporation. The Nanodomes are part of Cell’s plan for global domination.

Players can expect to go up against both human and Ceph enemies.

EA’s also announced the Crysis 3 Hunter Edition. Those who pre-order will get early access to the new bow weapon, the Hunter Nanosuit module with extra functionality, an XP head-start for multiplayer, a unique bow skin and three exclusive dog tags.
Three pre-order packs for specific retailers have also been announced:

  • Stalker Pack — Includes the base game, all Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: for players who like to stalk their prey from the shadows the Stalker Pack provides early multiplayer access to the deadly semi-auto Jackal shotgun. This powerful, close-range shotgun comes with a unique silencer attachment, custom weapon skin and two exclusive themed in-game dog tags.
  • Overkill Pack — Includes the base game, all Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: the Overkill Pack features early multiplayer access to the Typhoon assault weapon and skin. Spewing 500 rounds a second, the Typhoon gives players the ability to go guns blazing to take back the Liberty Dome. Also included are two exclusive Overkill themed in-game dog tags.
  • Predator Pack — Includes the base game, all the Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: the Predator Pack delivers early multiplayer access to the Feline submachine gun and exclusive camo. With an extremely fast rate of fire and a 60 round magazine the Feline is highly effective and deadly, at short range.

I'm hoping Crysis 3 is as good as the first Crysis was, being made with the PC in mind. I haven't played Crysis 2 yet (I plan to), but it had some pretty bad things in it like a bad FOV, the gun took up like a third of the screen, and the terrible motion blur. Pretty cool that you get to play as Prophet this time around as well.

First Crysis 3 gameplay video does the rounds – watch

EA’s released the first gameplay video for Crysis 3, as promised last week, showing more to it than the 19 second teaser originally showed.

The video shows New York City under now what is called the NYC Liberty Dome, constructed by Cell Corporation following the events at the end of Crysis 2.

A mix of both urban and jungle environments are shown, as Prophet is shown taking on the remaining Ceph.

Get the video below. Watch for more on Crysis 3 later this afternoon from EA’s European Showcase last week.

The shooter’s out next year for PS3, 360 and PC.

I played parts of the first game round a mates on his PC and enjoyed it and bought Crysis 2 on console and that was real fun, so I am keeping an eye out for more news regarding this as Halo 4 is the only shooter I'm planning to buy for a while now

Crytek: “We’ll do what we can” to protect Crysis 3 from piracy

Crytek is hoping to avoid a repeat performance of the heavy pirating of Crysis 2.

Speaking to PC Gamer, senior creative director Rasmus Højengaard said Crytek had not yet decided what anti-piracy measures to take with Crysis 3.

“I can’t say. Obviously it’s something we’d like to address,” he said.
“We’ll do what we can, but whatever that’s gonna be is hard to say yet.”

Although Crytek have reason to be a little sore about piracy, the developer managed to joke about it.
“It’s unfortunate that you don’t win any awards for most downloaded game,” Højengaard said.

“Certainly people apparently really want to play our games, they just don’t want to buy them.”

Crysis 2 was one of the most pirated games of 2011 and is estimated to have been illegally downloaded at least 4 million times after an early build leaked a month before release.

Crysis 3 is due on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next northern spring. Check out our video feature here.

Thanks, Gamefront.

Crysis 3 to pack in micro-detail rather than “immense scale” like Skyrim

Crytek is hoping to build a detailed world for Crysis 3 that feels as rich as Skyrim’s, but without resorting to the latter game’s enormous distances.

20120501crysis3_2.jpg

Speaking to games.on.net, Crytek’s Rasmus Højengaard decried comparison to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

“In Crysis 3, we want scale, but we don’t want the immense scale that Skyrim has,” he said.

“What we then add is detail within that scale that we decide, so that we get this richness in the environment that we want,” he added.

“Skyrim, they’re going for epic, epic scale, which means that their micro-detail is prioritised less. Their micro-detail exists in their grandeur rather than in their let’s-take-a-look-at-this-little-thing-here.”

Højengaard described the level of ambient detail in Crysis 1 as an “almost arrogant approach” that there “wasn’t really room for” in Crysis 2′s cityscape. Crysis 3′s urban ruin affords Crytek the opportunity to explore that once more.

“It isn’t in any way pushing anything but the ambience of the game,” he admitted, “but ambience in a setting like this is super-important. If you stop and everything’s frozen, it’s not gonna be believable.

“You need all these layers with the depth; you need the light-shafts that move, you need the movement of the plants, and you need the little animals that hop around or some random deer that walks across the screen at one point that you can maybe shoot with your bow if you want.

“Stuff like this is what’s gonna make people go, ‘Holy crap, this is a rich environment.’ That is our goal.”

Crysis 3 is due on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next northern spring.
