This might sound like a funny little topic when you look at it from the outset, but it's really been annoying me lately. At spontaneous and random times, I get these cough spasms and I can't stop coughing for a short amount of time. I just start coughing constantly, struggle to breathe and then I'm all right again after a minute or two. This wasn't very much of a problem in the past, but now it's getting worse.

Any suggestions what to do? Or even better, what's a possible cause of it?

Hmmm, I've gotten this at times in the past as well. It was usually when I was sick, basically I'd have a slight tickle in my throat and once I'd start coughing, I wouldn't stop for a good minute or so. I'm not sure if you have a cold right now, if so, then I'd blame it on that. And naturally when you recover, your cough will go away with it.

I think there may be 2 other things it could be. The first is allergies, general allergies from pollenated air. It's possible it's affecting your throat. I used to have bad nasal allergies, but as I got older, the allergies seemed to move to my eyes and throat. I don't have the cough problem, but I'm contantly clearing my throat, which is REALLY annoying. And if I cough as a result of that, it's a very dry cough. It's really not a big enough deal to me to do something about it, I just drink more fluids and basically hydrate my throat. This might work for you too, it's possible you may be slightly dehydrated as a result of allergies, or the warm weather (if it's warm up in your area that is). This would be a painfree solution thats simple enough to do. You could also take over-the-counter allergy medicine as well. I used this for my nasal problems, but it should work for throat issues as well. I used Tylenol Allergy-Sinus and it works great! And the only side effect of this is dry mouth (yeah, like you need that now, right? :P), but simply drink more fluids and you should be good.

The other issue it could be is that you're developing slight Asthma. It's not necessarily full-blown Asthma that would require an inhaler, but something that would effect you every now and again. When I was younger, and I got a cold, I would be unable to take full, deep breaths, always shallow breaths. My mother assumed I may have had the touch of Asthma, but it was not definite. As I got older, I sort of grew out of that and never get that anymore. Maybe it never was slight Asthma, I'm not even sure if such a thing exists to be totally honest, but you can always suffer the general symptoms every now and again. If it's slight enough, I'm sure it wouldn't require a doctor's assistance, you'd get over it in short order.

But anyways, if anything, just try drinking more fluids and see if that helps. Hope you feel better soon Faithy!

Well along the same lines, don't know if this is what you have. I have never gotten it checked up on, but I get gutteral coughs (best way I can explain it) basically my entire body contorts when I cough and it feels like it comes from my stomach all the way up my chest.

Its not gross, but when it occurs it happens in rapid succession. I feel like I'm literally dying when I do it though. It makes me extremely weak afterward.
