Cloud's past

I've been playing FF7 again, and I've noticed something that doesn't quite hold up to scrutiny. I would like some sort of explanation.

Cloud, entering Nibelheim with Sephiroth, is told that he can visit family & friends. He has taken Zack's place here. He then proceeds to see Cloud's mother. Why would Zack go to Cloud's home, when Zack's parents are in Gongaga? It's a bit confusing, innit?
 
Cloud was there, he was just one of the grunts as opposed to a member of SOLDIER, I assume he just got his memories mixed up thats all, I think you see like a flashback later and it shows him in the blue uniform, once it all comes out he thought he was Zack... Sephiroth would have directed that comment at Cloud knowing that he was from Nibelheim but Cloud has just confused his own memories.

It has been a good while since I played it now, but Im pretty sure he DID go to see his mum, just no one else because he was ashamed that he never made it
 
Because zack had a naughty relationship with clouds mom. No, im joking but i think cloud really saw his mom but besides that, he is replacing zack in his memory. but that reminds me, who and where is clouds dad?????

Nailed it in one. Visiting his mother WAS his original memory, and he DID do that. The rest of the crap you see in the flashback is just made up, most likely.

Thanks to the identity confusion afterwards, things get a little mixed up.
 
Sephiroth was speaking to Cloud in that scene who was the guy on the left in the Shinra uniform. He wasn't talking to Zack. :)
 
Cloud's memory's are mixed up, a comination of his own and a portion of Zack's. Cloud DID really go see his mother. You never see Clouds Father because he died when Cloud was young.

That is correct. Cloud's memories of personal experience are merged with his memories of third party observation. Sephiroth asks Cloud how it feels to be home (personal memory,) Zack asks Sephiroth about his parents (observational memory.)

Yup, exactly. He tells the group in the Inn while recounting his memories that his father died when he was younger, and his mom died soon after. =/
