So I think my iPod's finally kicked the bucket. For the last few weeks it's been bordering on awful battery life.. barely making it the trip home which is only aboot 30 mins.

But then today, fresh off the docking station, on the way into town.. it freezes.. and then refuses to boot up... and then it flashed me a little white screen telling me I needed to sync it to the computer. This was new.

So I did. iTunes tells me it's corrupted and it needs to be restored. Shit will be lost. Huzzah, happy parade time. So I sit, let it restore, watch as it ticks along meticulously.. iTunes tells me it restored, and that it needs to stay connected and it'll appear on the window. So I let it sit...

And sit...

Oh, a message! It's telling me it detects an iPod that's in recovery and that it needs to be restored. Well okay-- HEEEEY WAIT A SECOND

Didn't I just do that?

In short. What the fuck, Apple?

Sounds like the type of thing that'd occur when it's infected with a virus or something inside the ipod's messed up/fried ect.... :hmmm:

I'd send it away to get it fixed properly...unless that costs more than buying a new one...

Well then unless you got a friend who knows the 'in's and out's of a cats ass' when it comes to ipods, then yer better off buying a new one from :gasp: ebay or your local store.

Ebays not totally safe but atleast you can get one for cheap :gonk:

If they say it's new I'll go for it.. I don't even need the newest model but uhhh.. yah I'll have to just sell this for parts and try upgrade with my minimum OHNOWAIT MY NO WAGE JOB.

Ouch.

It sounds like the hard-drive inside the device could be corrupt. Generally they only last about 3-4 years so if yours is indeed that old, it's not surprising it's starting to play up.

The good news is you can buy new ones for certain types of iPod but it's a bit of a DIY job and I'm not sure how you'd feel about that. I'm sure there are more reputable sites, but here's an example: http://www.parts4ipods.com/iPod-Hard-Drives

If you send it to be repaired, they usually have set prices (At least they did when my friends headphone jack died) which I think was about £99 regardless of the issue, pretty pricey. You probably don't want to spend that on an iPod so old that a million other things could go wrong, so you may be better purchasing a new one, you can pick them up at reasonable prices second hand.

Failing that, mug someone! :tehe:

Yah well top on that that I'm from Canada and we're looking at double that price. So0o0o0ooo considering I'm pretty cheap, I'll sell this for as it is and get something else.

With the way my generation is, always buying the newest product, I guess Apple didn't anticipate anybody to actually hang onto one for longer than 5 years.

Hah, but I know how you feel.

The first iPod I got was a Nano (first generation) as a gift, I used it so much it was completely battered. Eventually the screen went though, it cracked and the ink leaked so you couldn't read the display. Replaced it with a 3rd generation Nano, which is getting on a bit in years now acutally.

You're right about new gizmos etc. Apple do release a new version of the same product about every six months and things just aren't expected to last :S

Buying a new one probably is your safest option as you can (hopefully) guarantee it won't fail again in another few months.

I'm at the point where I need one too. Mine barely lasts 4 hours (if I'm not changing the song often...the backlight REALLY kills it) from a full charge. However, I've found that if it's in any way cold, It'll act dead, but when I plug it in, it'll return to the charge it had.

Once I finally start the job I've pretty much been hired too, I'm getting a new one, as well as a new iPhone...mine likes to turn itself down on me. Volume buttons on the side are borked, lol. I'll be talking to someone and it turns itself down and I'm like "Bitch! Turn yourself back up!"

-__- Yes. Mine did that a lot too a while ago. In the car it'd go on and off acting dead but as soon as I reset it, or set it to charge it showed it had more than half the battery life.

Trying to sell it on ebay now. It won't even get out of that vicious cycle of reset/reboot from the computer. There isn't much else I can do beyond that besides see how much my last cheque from work is today and replace it.

Uh oh, that means that if yours did what mine is doing, mine is on it's last legs too. I'm soooo glad I just recently found a job (I haven't started yet...just took my pre-employment drug test...yay for being drug-free!) so that I can replace this bitch.

Is there any word on the iPod classics though? I heard that during the last Apple conference when they introduced the new gen of iPods, there were no classics to be seen...I sure hope that doesn't mean the end of the Classics, just simply that they haven't felt the need to upgrade them in any way yet.

As far as I know, Classics have only gone up to 7th Gen, and mine was a 5th, and that was a good.. 7/8 years ago. So depending on how far apart they spaced out those last two gens, it very well could mean the end.

I DID see a spot a The Source for 7th Gen Classic so they DO still sell them, they just had none in stock.

I'm not someone who just buys new electronics willy nilly cause a new model comes out. I actually use my stuff until it craps out.. like this.. :gasp:

I'm selling a buttload on ebay to try and make up the cash for this. I need new ipod nooooow.
