Champions League 2008

Liverpool were really dominant in the '80s. Manchester United were the club of the 90's and people had started to say Chelsea would dominate the beginning of the new millennium, but you can see United have had something to say about that.

Liverpool have gained the reputation as a Cup side since they can't seem to put forward a good challenge for the title. They've spent a fair few seasons trying to stay in 4th place. They just can't stay consistent enough to be legitimate challengers.

United have just taken a few years of transistion with bringing in new players and letting some go and the team is now showing what they are capable of. A similar thing has happened at Arsenal but they're pretty much left with the youngsters now, in the next couple of season I'd expect a fair bit of improvement on their part too when they get that experience.

Chelsea would probably have been fine but they've screwed themselves when releasing their good players and replacing them with a few duds.

Normally I would consider Liverpool to be the underdogs in that group of clubs, too, but in Bizarro Europe World I think they're always expected to win. They just always come up big in European competition somehow. Maybe it's Rafael Benitez's tactics or something.
That is Benitez and Liverpool in a nutshell. Benitez's record is fantastic in Europe with both Valenica and Liverpool, with Liverpool on the brink of 3 Champions League Finals in 4 years. However, that's all about how Benitez goes about his signings, he buys players that can produce a one-off performance when needed but apart from the likes of Gerrard and Torres they are nothing special week-in week-out in the Premiership...and why Babel doesn't start more often is beyond me. I still reckon that Liverpool are going to go all out because if they lose or get a score draw it will be extremely difficult to go to Stamford Bridge and get the score they need. Which is why they beat Arsenal, because the last leg was at home.

i haven't really payed much attention to this years champions league as i am a newcastle fan
Now we just need a mackam to join the forums. :neomon:

Liverpool 2 - 0 Chelsea (1st leg)
I'm still going with this prediction :neomon:
Torres and Gerrard...especially Gerrard look phenomenal on European nights, and I generally thing that the Kop will play a huge part as well as Liverpool being too strong at Anfield.

Gerrard and Torres to score

You got that part of your prediction wrong anyway. Been a so-so game first half.

Liverpool = Flukey gits. Again.

He should of scored...as soon as he took the second touch he had to stretch.
Any other game he'd of buried it.
...and Kuyt...he's done nothing all game and he scores, damn him.

I still say 2-0 to Liverpool...Torres has to score next half >_<
Chelsea look crap though ^_^

I hope Liverpool win, can't stand Chelsea anymore. Of course, I'm betting for United to win tomorrow considering I'm a Red myself ... a North West final would be really intense.

Chelsea looked to have started well but I think that's more to Liverpool forgetting they were in the middle of a game and you saw it was more them in control when they actually started playing.

Chelsea are playing so fucking crap the now.

Edit: John Terry being a dirty cunt on Torres just now.

Typical Chelsea, do absolutely nothing and come out with a draw
...and what the hell was Riise doing? For starters, he could have just kicked the ball away it was that low, and secondly why did he try heading it over the bar from 5yrds out.

I don't Torres was wearing his headband tonight, so his epic hairstyle got in the way :sad2:

I have to admit that even though Liverpool were the better team in that horrorshow of a game I still lol'd when the OG happened.

WTF the idiot was thinking when he did that we'll never know. Pundits are saying it would have been on his worse foot if he kicked it. Great reasoning guys.

Chelsea were woeful (and every other criticism from the Alan Hansen wordbook) especially in midfield, Cole, Lampard and Ballack again were useless and really let the game go past them and they really needed Essien tonight.

I laughed so hard at that. Time to leave a message with my Liverpool-supporting coworker. (Don't worry, I'll be civil.)

Time for the real game tomorrow. I'm too scared to make a prediction, though.

Was I typing another sentence half way through that... I don't Torres...whaaaat?

...I missed out the 'think'...I think.

Babel shouldn't have been taken off, all he needed was to run at Ferreira and he did that well in the first half...and oh, how I despise Avram, he's nowhere near as good as Mourinho they should stop comparing him to 'The Special One'.

i felt sorry for Riise when the ball went into the back of the net, also both teams tackles seemed to be getting dirtier towards the end of the game. it was quite a good game asides the diabolical tackles

Phwoar only 30 minutes left until kick off!
I think I might change my prediction after Liverpool yesterday xD...
Barca (Messi, Henry) 2 - 2 Man Utd (Ronaldo, Rooney)

Ronaldo is bound to score >_<
...oh yeah, I forgot, he doesn't perform on the big stage does he? :wacky:

I'm never betting on anyone to score ever again xD, I mean what the hell, Ronaldo's penalty was abysmal why didn't he just lace it like normal? Albeit he should have had another one and Marquez (I think it was him) should have been off, but apart from that Man Utd have done nothing...and its brilliant watching Messi take Evra apart :monster:
...Liverpool/Chelsea game was miles better than this one...and this is supposed to be the glamor tie.

oh are they still playing, I'm not watchin it cos my mum won't let me turn off the crap she is watching

Henry, came on 83rd minute as a sub...he was the best player in the game >_<, Ronaldo just completely bottled it...exactly the same as he did against Milan last year. In fact, I think that if Henry had started and Messi hadn't gone off injured and playing at his best Barca would have won.

1st leg glamor tie - Liverpool/Chelsea
2nd leg glamor tie - Liverpool/Chelsea
