After much speculation, Warner Bros. confirmed today that Selina Kyle, AKA Catwoman, will be in Chris Nolan's new Batman movie. And she will be played by...wait for it... Anne Hathaway.

In addition to Hathaway's casting, it was also revealed that Tom Hardy will play Bane, and not Hugo Strange, as widely rumored.

All of this nerd fuel comes via press release:

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Christopher Nolan stated, "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story."

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, "I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman's most formidable enemies."

Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. The Dark Knight Rises is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Yep, this is happening.
We're still waiting to hear how the rumors regarding Eva Green as Talia Al Ghul pans out, as well as Naomi Watts in the role of a potential love interest for Bruce Wayne. There's still a chance Talia could be in the movie.

And no word yet on how closely Nolan's take on the Bane character will mirror comic book version, which had Bane as the Venom-fueled brute who broke Batman's back. (We can only hope Hardy's Bane will do the character as much justice as Schumacher did in Batman & Robin. *slide whistle*)

And as for Selina Kyle's role in TDKR, IGN reported recently that Nolan's story will find Catwoman filling the void left by a fugitive Batman, with her vigilante activity prompting Batman's return.

Use the rest of your day to take up considerable space in our Comments Section regarding these two announcements, and IGN Movies will keep you updated as more news comes from Nolan's vault.

Im sorry but wtf seriously? I dont consider her to be an A-list actress..no way.IMO she is not the right person to be Catwoman, Hell no!

I mean what movies did she play in? Princess Diaries and freeking comedy movies.......
:ffs: I am somewhat disappointed :lew:/.....

Look in what shitty movies she played in........

Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada, and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. I like her, and I'm sure she'll be good in the role, but she doesn't strike me as a typical Catwoman persona. But who knows. The addition of Bane into the fray is intriguing.

Idk, she could be a good pick. Let's not knock it just yet :hmmm:

I quite like Anne Hathaway, and she was pretty excellent in Alice in Wonderland, so I'm rather curious as to how she'll be as Catwoman.

I don't think anyone could be as brilliant as Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman though, so really, whoever got cast would have had a difficult job impressing :lew:

I did not see Brokeback Mountain cause I am a homophobe.
I did not see The Devil Wears Prada cause it seemed like a chick flick to me.

Alice in wonderland I did see and her role wasnt exactly splendid..just some weird Queen with issues like the princess from princess diaries..

She was like the adult version of the one in Princess diaries in Wonderland...

The only film I have seen where she had a main role was PASSENGERS.
The film was not bad ..it was ok cause I like mystery/horror/thrillers etc.

IMO She is NOT the right candidate..

Oh well...I loved The Dark Knight to death,,,thats why Im talking a bit too passionate about this...

To me The Dark Knight is the best comic based movie released.

DC forever mayne :mokken:

Michelle Pfeiffer was ace :griin: ..the way she spins and purrs. :ohoho:

Didn't see Brokeback Mountain because you're a homophobe? OK then...

Anne Hathaway can be very good when given a good film, like Brokeback Mountain or Rachel Getting Married. I think both she and Tom Hardy are good choices, Hardy was one of the best things about Inception.

The fans were quite skeptical about Ledger playing the Joker and look how that turned out. You shouldn't judge an actress or actor based on the movies they were in. Sean Connery, Patrick Stewart, Christopher Lee, Clint Eastwood and Cate Blanchett were in some shit movies, yet they're ace actors.

Anne Hathoaway in a skin tight latex outfit? YES! SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! :rage:

In all seriousness, she's done well. And like Sultan said, people were bitching about Ledger as well, and he did an amazing job. I'm sure she'll do fine.

Now, excuse me while I fap to my fantastical thoughts of Hathaway in a skin tight latex outfit. :kinky:

*yawn* Two of the lamest villains in Batman >.>

Why not Killer Croc? Since Venom didn't eat anyone in the third Spiderman movie, I'd love to see some of that action go down in a darker series. Instead, we have Bane and Catwoman...

Oh no..another steroid freak and a girl that uses a whip...look out >.>

Catwoman isn't a villain in this. In case you haven't seen the last two films, Nolan and Goyer's interpretation of the batman universe are drastically different than previous ones. So i highly doubt both characters will be that cartoony. And there's one more rumored villain that hasn't been announced yet. It's too early to be dismissive, so grab a seat.

Catwoman is still boring. Look out, a whip! May as well throw Robin into the mix >.>

I say if Catwoman is going to be in the movie, throw in Killer Croc and have him eat her. She's only going to be there for sex appeal and this isn't the type of series to dwell on that. I can be as dismissive as I please >.>

I was hoping for the Pinquin myself -> Imagine Robert The Niro as Pinquin.
If Bane is in it, what about poison Ivy?

Mr Freeze ...oh well...

SPELLCHECK: penguin

It should be noted that Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle, they haven't even said yet how much of a role Catwoman will play in the film (if at all). And if she is in it, I seriously doubt she's just in there for sex appeal, give Christopher Nolan (a decent filmmaker last I checked) some credit.

A BAT CREDIT CARD?!?!?!?!?[/Nostalgia Critic]

Bane should be interesting. Nolan's done a good job of bringing the Batman villains as characters down to a more realistic level, so hopefully this'll be a Bane that's going to use his brains more than his muscles.

Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle: Should be interesting (ditto on her not being fully named as "Catwoman").

I look forward to seeing how this movie works out. After all, I was one of those "Heath Ledger doing the Joker, wtf?" people, and he did great (even if the TDK Joker is freakishly overhyped).

I have mixed feelings about Anne Hathaway...
She might have the potential to pull it off... but, I'm not sure.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
I didn't enjoy her performance in Get Smart or anything like that, so I probably won't in this. I will just pretend its Christian Bale talking to... Christian Bale...as ChristianCatWoman

Anne Hathaway as Catwoman? Fuck yah. She's an ace actress and sure she's been dealt a lot of prissy, very lady like roles in movies, I'm really intrigued to see how she'll take on Post-fall, Crazy Selena Kyle.

I like Anne Hathaway.. I hated her originally for making those stupid princess movies but I'm glad I gave her another chance. She's terrific in my opinion. She has a huge range and can do a lot of different voices as well (she was hilarious in Valentine's Day).

Nobody's really mentioned Tom Hardy yet though. I am so glad to see his name there. I loved him in Inception and I'm glad he's landed a role in this movie, that'll be great for his career.

I don't know anything about either of their characters though because I've only ever seen Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Is Bane a good guy or bad guy?
