Carbuncle

hey i know this might be a strange thing to ask,, but Carbucle is one of my favourite gf's in ff8 and he's really cute,but what exactly is he?
i always thought he was a squirrel? heehee can someone correct me please?

It is a mythological creature. I think it goes back to the Spanish conquest of the Americas where they told tales of a mysterious creature.

It was said to be a small mammal which had a characteristic shining jewel / gem / ruby on its forehead. The jewel was precious and it was meant to bring great luck and fortune should you ever manage to capture one.

I'm not sure where exactly it comes from other than that is its origin. I don't know anything else about the creature, sadly. Other than that people tried to look for it and no-one was successful.



The FF design of the Carbuncle resembles a rodent type creature.. Most closely resembling a squirrel I guess. It can have racoon-like or even canine-like features as well though.


The FFVIII version resembles a rabbit or hare with a long squirrel-like tail.

The characteristic gemstone on the head of the creature is the key thing with Carbuncle, and it is probably from the gleaming light that was meant to reflect of it that they decided to make Carbuncle's signature move Ruby Light, which happens to cast reflect. Very fitting for it.
