why Sin was created in the first place? haha a really obvious question i know but the answer has escaped me somehow while contemplating the events of the game.

He was created as a punishment on mankind for their reliance on Machina. At least that was what people were taught by Yevon. I think really though it was just
Yevon trying to dominate, manipulate and control the world or something

Yu Yevon created to defeat Bevelle in the Machina war. Technically he told it to destroy places that used machina. So when the war was over sin just kept doing what he was doing because Yu Yevon existed only to summon him, and sin was programmed to do that. The final summoning was believed to be the only way to defeat sin
 
Actually, the first thing that happened was Bevelle surprise attacking Zanarkand. It wasn't as much of a war (even though it was termed so), rather an ambush that Zanarkand could not stand up against since they had no machina; just summoning. Only the few survivors left fled to Mt. Gagazet where they gave up their lives to become Fayth where they began dreaming.

Yevon as the most powerful Summoner dreams up his into an Aeon and takes the surrounding pyreflies around him to form his armor which becomes known as Sin. Sin then is meant to first off destroy the rest of Zanarkand, and then second of all, destroy the attacking Bevelle Army.

Afterwards Sin's main purpose is to attack and growing and larger human settlement, and to forcefully retaliate to any demonstrated aggression.
