Blitzball... so frustrating

EDIT 3.0: Whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I finally did it I ran in to a horrible cycle of Fail because the Goers kept on getting the ball on every face-off (9 times in a row.. I counted), but I somehow ended up winning now.

It started off with me having bad luck as usual, but I came through with a couple miracles, and won 2-1. Long story short: Went through horrible trials of patience, but came out on top; ME HAPPY! *gives massive bear hug to everyone*

Blitzball, outside of the Luca tourney is actually fun now. Yay for me.

And now, the nomal contents of this thread:

Let me start out by saying I've had FFX for about 4 or 5 years now, and I'm only about 60 hours in to the game - I finally decided to resume playing this game after like two years (I gave this game no love what so ever). And I must say, it's been going really difficult to me. I look back, and see that I messed a lot of things up along the way, namely my Sphere Grid (Tidus knows Ultima?). So, I decided to restart the game, and do everything right (that I messed up a number of years ago). Progress is going good, now =]

Alright, with that out of the way, I'm at tournament Luca right now, doing my first Blitzball tourney. And for the life of me, I cannot win it. All the other players seem to out-rank me in every way, shape or form.

Now, I've pretty much tried everything, and it's just getting frustrating now. Does anyone have any good strategies, because obviously mine don't work. Said strategy(s) of Failure(s) is: Trying to pass the ball around lots, and giving it to the guys with high EN and PA to wander around, and distract the other team, and then using their high PA (and EN for encounters) to pass it to a player with high SH.

I just cannot seem to do this. I once got a goal on them on the first quarter, and thought I could play defensive and/or try to get a goal with Tidus's Jeht Shot.. Nope, they scored. Went in to two overtimes, then got bestest vida higher stats.

OK, really now. Either I'm just really bad, need more practice, don't know the key to winning this thing, I messed up my stats along the way (which I doubt because Blitzball stats are seperate), or the game just really, really hates me.

But, uhhh, some strategies would be really.. really nice. I don't get frustrated at many things in life--but next to Super Mario Kart--this is one of them

Help me.. Please.

EDIT: DAMN, DAMN, DAMN, DAMN! I just can't do it. It usually winds down to the enemy getting the ball at the face-off, and not letting me have ONE opportunity to do anything about it. And they score, I'm screwed. If I do get the ball, I try to through it around as much as possible, but their red arrows just swarm me, and I always end up facing off against (usually multiple) people with high a high BL and AT. This is just insanity. I can't do anything.. how am I supposed to pass the ball back and fourth if their red arrows always know where to go.. but my green arrows always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time?

EDIT 2.0: I swear, they get the ball at every start. I've had it go 1-1 once, but they won in OT.. And at other times, I'm RIGHT up at the goal, with only one defender I manage to smash through. And it still fails... DAMN

That firsat Blitzball match is really hard, but possible to do. I have never done it myself (not for want of trying lol) But tbh, it's not even worth it, all you get is a crappy cutscene with a crappy trophy anyway

I gave up after trying about a hundred times I think its just down to uck more than anything.....

Passing the ball around lotys does get your exp up, and thats how I trained my chars in the long run, but that game in Luca, tbqh, I think Id just give it a miss if I were you , unless your really really persistent and get lucky

Normally, I'd just let this slide, but.. I've kinda had this game since grade 7 (in grade 12 now), so that'd be nearly 6 years. And six years of not giving this game any love.

So, just like my PS2, I am inclined to love this game. A lot, and I feel I must do everything correctly >_> I'm guessing that Blitzball will be a lot easier after the tournament, myes?

Must... beat... =P When I have to beat something, I have to beat it. I don't really get deterred easy.

But yeah, somewhat frustrating. Methinks I should go to bed and try later tommorow; a clear head does wonders.

lolo, you have more patience than me then, Iv had it since it was released and it's the only thing I have let slide becausae it is just so damn annoying

And yeah, it does get easier, you might lose afew matches at first but once you get some exp you will find that you start kicking arse - then it becomes to easy and it's like one long boring chore

What really needs to be done is focusing on making one goal. Then running like a fag so the arses can't get the ball from you.

But Simply enough, Tidus and Jassu go on LF and RF. I don't know if Datto is speedy when you first have him, but he's good to get away with the ball. Letty and the others just go in the back. Letty is your best for passing.

Also, it's good to pass when the other team's markers aren't inside the character's circle that's currently being controlled. Just swim away briefly until they're clear of a good partner to pass the ball to.

The first game is a pain in the ass though. I've only played it five times and won thrice. One time doesn't really count, because I got all techniques for my team. They were annoying bastards tbh. I really wanted to waste them. Wasted them, I did.

Yeah, I figured that Blitzball would be much easier after the first tournament in Luca.. but dang >_>

I once somehow scored a goal in the first half, and ran away with the ball in the second half, and got gang-banged when there was just a few seconds left, and they scored a goal. Went in to two OTs, and then through magical BS, they scored =[=[

I was also JUST about to use the Jeht Shot... but no, it was RIGHT at the 3:00 minute mark in the 2nd half >_>

I'm pretty crap at Blitzball, though I have won the trophy in Luca once, though it was through sheer luck. I agree it gets easier as you train up in later games ^^

I've never won a match of Blitzball. I don't care enough about a mini-game to be bothered to play it enough to get good.

I DID manage to score a goal once. That's enough of a victory for me. =]

From what I read, you took that game into a few overtimes even! At least you can play some defense.

I scored one goal...but I think the opposing team put at least 10 up on me. haha

you give the ball to tidus in the first half so he can learn jecht shot.
and dont let them score, hog the ball, because its almost impossible to score in the first half.

in the second half, put letty as LF then swim wide, he will draw one defender, then pass to tidus, who will score with jecht shot (hopefully).

then when tidus goes off give it to wakka and get him to shoot whenever he gets it.

i won 4 times from 4

Placebo: Yeah, thanks =] I'm pretty sure that was already my strategy. I always let Letty (who has great PA) hang around with the ball, but Tidus/Wakka never seem to want to hang around the enemy goal.. ever. They're always in the wrong place. Letty always has the luck of going up against that one guy who has an extremely high BL and AT stats. So blah.

When I need them hanging around the enemy goal (I set formation to Left side), they're always in the wrong place every time

EDIT 2.0: OK, really now.. this is just rediculous. I just got on FFX, and I'm doing the Luca tournament part again. When the game started, the enemy team got the ball at the face-off, and I didn't even get one opportunity to do anything about it. They scored..

I try to have Letty have the ball, and keep them away, but they just constantly swarm me no matter where I go. I try to constantly pass, but damn

Why did they have to make this so difficult? And at this point, I'm just rambling on.. nothing seems to work =[=[

That initial match against Luca was a total bitch... but I had one key way to do it.
In the first half, I only scored one goal with Tidus (via Jecht Shot), then I put everyone into "Mark Mode" and swam around with my fastest guy...
Did the same thing in the second half, "Mark Mode" and swim around; and they didn't score anything...

Later on, I think Blitzball gets really fun, especially if you recruit Brother, Ropp (especially Ropp!), Wedge and Kyuin...
Those three, Tidus and some random Al Bhed (a woman... tall blonde in pink... don't remember her name) are my ultimate team; with Ropp in the middle, Tidus on LF, Brother on LB, Al Bhed Lady on RB, Wedge on RF and Kyuin on Goals...
I really want a better goalie, but the other teams always snap them up so quick...

xD, yeah, I agree. Blitzball is soooo much fun ever since I beat the first tournament in Luca. One it by sheer luck, but I still won nontheless. I've played about 4 Blitzball matches so far, and haven't lost one, yet =]

I need to find out where to recruit some good players. I found a Ronso guy in Luca, and he's pretty damn good. I need more people with a high AT level, too.

Thanks for all the help guy, I think it was a combination of luck, and just plain-out getting better at it through repedidivity (is that even a word? Who cares; you know what it means). Man, <3 Blitzball.

Still, could really ditch some of the mediocre players.
