So i wasnt sure where to put this...but im a big fan of music in video games...to me it can make or break a great game...obviously Final Fantasy is known for they're great tone setting songs...but what are some of your specific favorite songs or other games with good VGM? A few of mine are

To Zanarkand-FFX
Silence before the sun-FFX
Force your way-FFVIII (<--one of the best!)
Keeping the Peace-Dissidia

I'm filled with an odd sense of déjà vu here...but eh, any excuse to harp on about my favourite tracks. xD

Here comes a looooooong post, because I have a lot of favourites.

Cold Steel Coffin (NieR) - This is easily the most atmospheric track from any game, ever. When you're running across a rickety bridge with a drop so far down you can't even see the bottom with shades attacking you and absolutely no people around in sight, it's downright chilling.

Song of Ancients - Fate (NieR) - The perfect track for the most surprising battle in the game. Not much else to be said, really...at least, not unless I'm spoiling the game~

Blu Bird (NieR) - Considering the background music that was leading up to this fight, The Incomplete Stone, this was a logical step to take. Plus...it's so different. How many video games utilise that style of vocals for a boss battle? Bugger all, that's how many. Blu Bird is unique and, since it was the first track I heard from NieR and was the first indicator I had that the game would be awesome beyond belief, it's one of my favourite tracks from it. Although I do prefer the remixed version...

Venus Lighthouse (Golden Sun) - This was such an awesomely epic final dungeon theme! It gave me a great sense of accomplishment to have actually gotten that far (GS was my first GBA game) and it promised an epic final battle to come. Plus it just seemed to suit the surroundings. Easily my favourite final dungeon theme, it's not stereotypically ominous like you'd expect...it's quite uplifting.

The Golden Sun Rises (Golden Sun: The Lost Age) - It's a shame this theme only started playing towards the end of the game, around Prox...its easily the most epic overworld theme ever, and was much better than the other ones that played. Similar to Venus Lighthouse, I just like how this one sounds. It makes me feel good :ryan:

Luigi's Mansion Medley (Super Smash Bros. Brawl) - More people should play this game. This theme alone proves that Luigi > Mario. It's both creepy and stereotypically Nintendo at the same time. It loses something without Luigi nervously humming along, but...

How Wicked Ruler (Valkyrie Profile) - The first time this track played, the entire game was turned on it's ear, as the main villain asserted himself (FINALLY) and all manner of crazy shit went down. Before the NieR OST came along, this was my favourite track from any video games, and even now it still ranks highly amongst my favourites. It's just that epic :gasp:

The True Mirror (Baten Kaitos) - A non-remixed orchestral battle theme as the default battle theme? Yes please. Baten Kaitos OST in general is easily Sakuraba's finest work, and this remains my favourite default battle theme.

Mantis' Hymn (Metal Gear Solid) - Still the creepiest theme ever. I've always been fond of Psycho Mantis as a villain, and I was seriously freaked out the first time I played MGS and this started playing. Especially since after a tank bunker, a plush suit was a remarkable change in scenery...and the guy wears a gas mask and can float in the air, for crying out loud.

The Gears Go Awry (Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin) - Every Castlevania game has a Clock Tower section, and they inevitably end up having my favourite music in the entire game, but PoR's gets special mention for the remixed organ.

Scrap and Build Ourselves From Revolution (Eternal Sonata) - In general, I love Eternal Sonata's soundtrack, but this in particular stands out for me because it takes one of my favourite classical pieces and makes it even better.

Crossing the Styx (Dante's Inferno) - This is a particularly memorable piece, because the Styx is the only time where the entire game calms down for a few minutes. No overwhelming screams of the damned, no enemies attacking you every five seconds...just Dante travelling across a river of blood. This sets the mood perfectly.

Theme of El Shaddai (El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron) - I haven't even played this game yet and already I'm in love with it's OST :gasp:

Bluebird's Flight (White Knight Chronicles II) - As far as main menu themes go, I've yet to hear a better one. Sure, you only get the first thirty seconds or so, but the rest of it is pretty damn epic.

Painful Battle (Final Fantasy Tactics A2) - I suppose an FF theme had to creep in here from somewhere. With the exception of The True Mirror, Painful Battle is my default battle theme. It's fast-paced, catchy and, considering how mediocre the other battle themes in this game were, every time it came on I automatically started paying attention.

Forest of Idols [A] (Resonance of Fate) - Those of you who have played the game might have some idea as to why I love this theme so much: it gets right in your head and stays there. It's one of those unusual themes that has grown on me as time has gone by, and I've spent so many hours listening to it...

Gym (Pokemon Red/Blue) - How many of you remember the first time you heard this? I still do. I love 8-bit music. Still one of my favourite pieces of 8-bit music. Epic win is epic.

Champion Cynthia (Pokemon D/P/Pt/B/W) - I adore Cynthia. I love her design, the fact that she's a female champion and she's harder to beat than any previous champion, and that she gets an epic piano prelude theme before her fairly catchy battle music. The Black/White version is just a little bit more polished...perhaps the only thing they did right with the OST of that game. Music in the Pokemon series has gotten worse as time has gone by, and this is definetely one of the better pieces.

Beat the Angel (Tales of Symphonia) - ToS had a lot of good battle themes, but this one is my favourite, because fighting
Remiel
to this was so unbelivably epic...it marked the turning point in the game, when it went from being a standard collect-a-thon to something much more intricate and interesting. Plus the bells are a nice touch...suitably angelic.

Fatal Fight (Xenosaga III) - Xenosaga has fantastic music and this is my favourite version of the Fatal Fight battle theme. In case you hadn't noticed by now, I'm a huge fan of vocal tracks, and the vocals in this are unusual to say the least. Not as good as NieR, but still good.

I'll edit this as I think of more, I KNOW I've missed some out...

woow thats a serious list...so im guessing your not a huge fan of Final Fantasies songlists?

There's so much good video game music out there, I think it's a shame a lot of people automatically regard it as nothing more than weak repetetive tunes, when a lot of it is actually really really well composed. The FF series is really good for demonstrating this, particularly Uematsu's music. A few favourites of mine from FF and other series are:

Clash on the Big Bridge (FFV)
The Decisive Battle (FFVI)
Not Alone (FFIX)
Melodies of Life (FFIX)
Silver Dragon (FFIX)
The Demon King's Heartbeat (FF 4 Heroes of Light)
Battle2~Courage and Pride from the Heart (Sword of Mana)
Flying Battery Zone (Sonic & Knuckles)
Doomsday Zone (Sonic & Knuckles)
Wicked Child (Castlevania)
Big Blue (F-Zero)
Act on Instinct (Command & Conquer)
Terran theme 1 (Starcraft)
Legend of Zelda theme - I really liked the one from the first Four Swords game in particular, and the Wind Waker version as well.
Last Battle (Pokemon Red & Blue)
Guile Theme (Street Fighter II)
Wings of Kynareth (TESIV Oblivion)
Glory of Cyrodiil (TESIV Oblivion)

Hands down, Chrono Cross OST. One of my favorite joints from the soundtrack is Radical Dreamers. I love sounds like this, but I haven't had any luck finding other OSTs that sound similar to this. Any suggestions?

not too sure what to compare that too...sounds like it would be a great song for a game...unfortunately i never had the pleasure of playing through chrono cross :/...possibly breezy FFVIII minus the lyrics? lol kinda sorta

If anyone is a fan of covers of FF songs (particularly guitar)...check this dude out...pretty sick

I always liked the Option Select song from Guilty Gear X2. A simple Bass beat followed by some uplifting guitar riffs. Total badassness. In fact, most of the music in Guilty Gear is pretty sweet. Also, the music in Dragon Warrior VIII is pretty good too. A kind of Epic Classical. Very enjoyable to listen to.
