In any franchise, on any platform, on either side of good or evil, who would you say is the best character in any game in the world?

It's not necessary but specific reasons why and a small backstory might help for people who haven't played the relevant game yet.

I'll have to say my bro-crush, Fei Wong from Xenogears. He was a straight laced dude, living a normal life, when all the sudden he was forced to unleash his inner essence. This also killed all of whom he loved basically. Throughout the entire story it displays his memory and what he is destined for. When he becomes his true form... damn the dude was pimpin. Gotta love the Nisan Cross.

Cloud Strife or Ezio Auditore from Assassin's Creed.

Cloud Strife because he's one of the first anti hero heroes of the gaming world. And back in my day Cloud was a really good character before crappy retcons destroyed him.

Ezio because he can kill you and flirt at the same time. I mean, who doesn't like a ladies man for a hero?

I forgot to post mine. :gonk:

Those of you with a keen eye will notice that I occasionally flick back to my Kerrigan obsession. She's from a game called Starcraft, an RTS game made by Blizzard Entertainment (creators of Warcraft). It follows three distinct races - the terrans (humans, who are divided in to separate factions competing for opposing objectives), the zerg (feral aliens, controlled by and linked to a single higher being known as the Overmind) and the protoss (sophisticated aliens, led by religion, traditions and are all linked psionically but act independantly).

Sarah Louise Kerrigan was, as a child, experimented on by an oppressive terran faction known as the Confederacy. She possessed frightening psychic and psionic abilities and was forced in to part of the Ghost programme, where individuals were trained to be highly-skilled assassins/snipers with a shoot-first-ask-later attitude. Abused, with her abilities kept pinned down, she was rescued by a rebel leader, Arcturus Mengsk. Over the years Kerrigan became very thankful to him and soon climbed the ranks to his most trusted adviser/tactician and Lieutenant. While fighting the Confederacy she was introduced to local Marshall, Jim Raynor and the two started a small love interest.

After one mission that resulted in the zerg being set upon the Confederacy, led by Kerrigan at Mengsk's command, Mengsk ordered all ships to leave the planet and subsequently abandoned Kerrigan to the zerg.

Presumed dead, we never hear of Kerrigan again until we learn that the Overmind gave birth to a new minion of his Swarm - Kerrigan. Her immense psionic abilities drew his attention and, instead of being mutilated, she was captured, infested and transformed in to the Queen of the zerg, independent from them all. She became vengeful to Mengsk, ruthless and brutal, slaughtering everything that stood in her way. She managed to unlock some of her repressed powers and grew even stronger. After the death of the Overmind, and learning that a new one was growing elsewhere, she managed the following (in an expansion set dedicated to her rise to power):

+ convinced her enemies that she was free from the zerg impulses and returned to normal
+ forms an alliance with them and even helps them free their homeland from zerg forces
+ helps Mengsk rise to power on the proviso that he helps her regain control of some zerg forces (in order to help destroy the new Overmind/new human threat)
+ betrays Mengsk, destroys his new-found power, kills his general and another ally (friend of Jim Raynor)
+ controls a protoss leader in order to have the new Overmind destroyed at no extra cost to her
+ forces the next-in-line protoss to kill the leader to free her from Kerrigan's control
+ humiliates Raynor by exploiting his feelings for her in order to better herself - he feels responsible for her becoming what she is in the first place
+ scatters the protoss and terran forces and annihilates the new threat from earth
+ becomes "Queen Bitch of the Universe" - practically unchallenged, with full control over the zerg, decimated her enemies

The game ended 12 years ago with her on a throne at the top of the Universe, basically. Her determination, cunning, tragic backstory, small glimmers of some leftover humanity, brutality and general fierceness in these endeavours all contribute to the best character I've ever encountered.

Either GameStop or IGN voted her the 2nd best villain of all time, second only to Sephiroth (hah).

Expect me to expand on this in 2 weeks when Starcraft II comes out.

I'll say Dante. A badass half demon half human. He has a twin brother who seeks the evil, but Dante himself fights for the good and became a demon hunter because his mother has been killed by demons. He loves to party, and is always amused whenever a demon pops up. He likes to flirt and to have fun no matter what situation he's in. He loves to taunt demons before a battle. As example:

Against cerberus: How about I'll take you out for a walk. Come on puppy, let's go.

He loves to use guns and swords.
When he's 10 years older (devil may cry 4) He has matured a bit, but still is pretty much the same as 10 years ago when it comes to fights.

Example:
Dante's sitting on a fire demon'ss tail, Berial notices him and sweeps the tail so Dante jumps off, then he says: Wished you noticed me earlier, now my coat is all charred.

I just love his attitude and his choice of weapons and fighting style. Also his voice was awesome (DMC3 and 4)

Wow, I dunno. There are so many. K, well Im not going to pick a Final Fantasy character as that would be far too easy. And the Persona games are really silent protagnists, so theyre out :/ So guess I shall chose ...

Alistair from Dragon Age Origins :)

Not only good eye candy for female DAO players,
but hes also the bastard son of the King.
Hes a Grey Warden and is the only other Grey Warden, bar your character and Duncan. Hes a lover of cheese, yes cheese lol. He has a cute cheeky humor and reminds me so much of Xander of Buffy. His banter with Morrigan is adorable and random.

Albedo from Xenosaga :x3: *tries not to fangirl*

Never before have I seen a more brilliant, well-thought out character in any video game; he's actually one of my favorite characters from any story in any medium. I won't divulge any spoilers (because EVERYONE needs to play these 3 games right now :mokken:), but essentially, Albedo is thought to be a loose-cannon "lunatic" throughout much of the series, yet as the story progresses it turns out he's actually such a crafty and brilliant mastermind that he ends up manipulating the entire galaxy to meet his own ends :lew: He's got an awesome personality--he has a very dashing, intelligent manner about him; his monologues are extremely enjoyable, and his insane laughter is infectious as well :wacky: Plus, anyone who
rips his own head off
just for the hell of it HAS to be badass :mokken: He's just such a freaking crazy and cool character, I don't see how anyone who has played the games could not love him ^_^ Not to mention...

...he's not bad-looking either ;) (Oh and BTW, just to clear the air, he is not a pedophile by any means :mokken: I've heard tons of people call him one, but clearly they haven't read the in-game encyclopedia in Episode III, it explains in great detail the reasons for his actions involving Momo and the Kirschwassers, and that is far from being his motivation. Just in case any of the people from those random websites happen to be reading this ^_^) But anyway, yeah. Albedo is f*cking awesome, and he's one of the main reasons Xenosaga is my favorite game series of all time :awesome:

...Followed closely by FF, of course :gasp: ^^

This character had been overshadowed by his father during his whole career.
Since he was a creation of man and not legitimately conceived, he had no reason to believe there was any purpose to his life.
His only friend, he betrayed and killed to fulfill his mission.
His father, he murdered brutally in the forest of Africa.
His brother, he fought in a battlefield in Alaska hand to hand until both of them were on the brink death.
He was poisoned by his comrad, tortured by his enemies, and repeatedly forced to kill for the sake of his commander, who lied to him over and over.
In the end, he came out in one piece, took his life back, and put everything back in order. He spent the rest of his life repenting for his sins to mankind.
He learned lessons of love, passion, companionship, and what it means to be a soldier.

I think Snake is the most badass character.

I could name hundreds I love. A pointles sone being OG Loc in GTA San Andreas. It's silly, but I live love how is this wannabe gangsta rapping in the bathroom of a fast food joint. I wish he was in the game a little more actually because it's not liek you know much about him, or many other character in a GTA in fact.

I think my favourite of all time has to be The Prince. SoT, WW, TT - it doesn't matter! You've got this huy who is just the full package. A little cocky, but can you blame him? He can do the same shit as all these superhuman people and then some. He doesn't need to be a half demon to climb walls haha. Master swordsman, good dancer so to speak. Athletic, entertainingly funny, if not a little strange that he talks to himself. But then, who else is he going to talk to haha.

Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect series. Even though you get to pick his character class and background, and you get to make plenty of choices on his behalf throughout the game, he still feels like a very distinct character. It doesn't matter whether you choose to play nice or put a gun to someone's head, it's never lacking in character and it never feels out of character.

I also love how completely unphased he seems to be by the gargantuan tasks that are thrust upon him time after time. He's just an ordinary human, yet utterly fearless and always acting as if saving the galaxy is second nature to him ::wacky:

I have tons of favourite characters, but I think my favourite character ever is probably Lord Yggdrasill, from Tales of Symphonia. I don't think I've been more surprised by a game when it was revealed that
he was actually Mithos the Hero, and Martel, the Goddess of both worlds, was his near-deceased sister, and Yuan and Kratos were also his companions, making them thousands of years old.

I really empathised with his situation, and couldn't really fault him for the actions he took. I felt really sorry for him at the end of the game. Not to mention he had a brilliant voice actor, a creepy organ theme, and he looked like Elvis. Despite all that though, he was
just a kid who loved his sister and drew strength from companions who, in the end, ended up abandoning him and breaking his trust, through no real fault of his own - he did the best he could, and he still lost his sister and, as a result, his companions left him. He had a lot to live up to as a hero, and whilst his system for the two worlds was flawed, what system isn't flawed?
.

...I'd love to see a prequel to ToS focusing on his story. It would have made a much better story than Dawn of the New World did.

However, I am very fond of Lezard Valeth. He's just...epic. In every way - he's an ordinary looking mage with an insane desire that he keeps hidden extremely well until the right moment, and he's not displaced by some stupid random final boss type character who makes no sense. He answers to nobody but himself. Plus I love his "AHAHAHAHAHA! KNEEL DOWN BEFORE ME!" line. As well as the insane teleportation laugh, and his whole grandiose speech when he's casting pretty much any higher-level spell. He's really full of it

Sander Cohen from BioShock also gets a mention, just because of his overly eccentric tastes. Taking pictures of dead people for a mural is definetely one of the strangest tasks I've ever had to do in a videogame...plus fending off all those Spider Splicers with Waltz of the Flowers playing in the background was the highlight of the game. His appearance when you complete the mural was awesome, as well. XD

Humour-wise, I'd say Laharl or Alistair from Dragon Age were my favourites. Laharl breaks the fourth wall a lot - his whole anime movie in Disgaea 2 was priceless - but Alistair has one of those really dry senses of humour that meant he never left my party in Dragon Age. His conversations with Wynne and Morrigan were absolutely priceless. Anders was good in Awakening, but he was more of the same. Alistair made the slow beginning of Dragon Age not only bearable, but enjoyable.

One of most interesting characters I've come across is Legion, in Mass Effect 2. He added a completely new side to the Geth, and I really hope they keep him in the third game. In the original Mass Effect, the Geth were just fodder. Legion gave them personality and depth. The most unlikely allies are always the most interesting.

Honourable badass mentions go to Liquid Snake, from Metal Gear Solid - I love his accent, and his refusal to die made him awesome - and Albert Wesker, from Resident Evil, who, whilst having slightly more development than Liquid, really didn't
go out well in Resi 5. It totally ruined his character, in my opinion.

I actually think my favorite character in any video game would have to be Spike in Wild Arms 3. He is a family man, scientist, and a dead-on shot with a rifle. So basically he is extremely intelligent, fun, free, deadly, and most of the ladies are attracted to him, but he shuts them out. I enjoy a character that has a family because it is extremely rare for a main character to not be single and looking. He is just awesome all around.

I've said it before but, Jecht he is the most manly of men, with his ability to grow facial hair in the most desperate of times, his badass look despite being created by Tetsuya Nomura the god of effeminate character creations, his drunken antics that were both humorous and surely aided the putting of hoes in their place. The way he always let you know without a shadow of a doubt that he had most definitely hit a woman at some stage in his life, and the way he defecates on all other FF characters from a most lofty of heights. Finally of course is the fact that every other person ever is 1000 years too early to withstand his manliness.

Okay, I'd say Lenneth Valkyrie from Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is the best character ever.
She's one of the three valkyrie sisters from Valhalla, she's the warrior maiden and "Death Goddess". In the game you can alter her personality and her actions with what you do with the other characters, when I got a certain ending, I made up my mind that she is a BEAST.
1. She
disobeyed and turned her back
on Odin and Freya,
2. Unlike the other gods, she cared for the humans, who Freya said are nothing but the gods' tools.
3. When
Odin died and Freya was grieving like crazy
, Lenneth didn't care because Freya
was being a hypocrite for crying over Odin and not the humans who are dying
.
4. She had a tragic past, I always love this about characters,
she was an abused girl named Platina, who died because her boyfriend Lucian told her to run away with him, and acidentally he brought her to a place full of poisonous flowers and fumes, she said she wanted to die and forget it all. And then Freya found her and locked away her memories and emotions, so that Lenneth could fight with no "obstacles"
... that bitch! :ohshit:
5. There's a love story with her, and it's not sappy and googly-eyed like other games with love stories. But she made me want to cry around the whole big part when she saw Loki
fight and "kill"
Lucian in Valhalla, and then she returned to the poisonous meadow and ugh... so great.

If there was never any Final Fantasy, this game would be at the very top of my favorites
