I've got a relatively new laptop, it's about 5 months old and a Sony Vaio with original battery and charger. The problem started about a week ago. I had my laptop unplugged from the wall so it was draining the battery, once it got down to 15% I plugged it in. It didn't gain any charge but I presumed that was because I was using it, however when I put it on hibernate and later when I turned it off it still won't charge. I know there is some form of power coming in though because it holds charge at 15% and isn't draining any further. There's also an led light at the front that is blinking quickly when it doesn't normally do that. Any advice would be nice, because I know very little about laptops.

you could try taking the battery out, leaving it for a few hours, and then plug it back in, it might just need some unplugged time can be caused by a power surge...,... try that and it should help :yay:

I took the cable out to test how long it stayed at 15% and it immediately dropped down to 14% so I put the cable back in. I have left it unplugged all night and turned off and then started trying to charge it again the next day but still nothing. I'm worried about leaving it unplugged when it's so low on charge for any amount of time in case it goes too low and turns off and then I'll be without a computer which I need for college.

Charge it for a few hours and see how long it stays on while unplugged, maybe it is just not displaying how much charge is left properly

I would do that, but if it really isn't gaining any charge I doubt it'll last half an hour before switching off and then I might not be able to turn it back on again. Usually the icon in the bottom there's a bar with a charger next to it that fills up when it's charging but in this case it only does that while the computer is starting up and then stops and the fast blinking light makes me think that the computer knows there is something wrong with the way it's charging.

I really want to try out different ideas but I can't be without my laptop because all my work is on here for college and I can't afford not to be able to use my laptop.

This is a really stressing problem and for such a new laptop, I really wasn't expecting any problems so soon :(

store everything vital on a usb, then try

If it stays on when plugged in, then if it powers off you should still be able to turn it back on when you plug it back in

I'm a graphics student and it's the programs on my laptop that I need to work with, not the files themselves as much.

I was thinking that as well, but it normally turns off at about 8% so I'm worried that if it goes down that far it might not have enough strength even if I do plug it back in. It has since gone down to 13%. I'm probably just being too paranoid. Maybe I should phone Sony? I mean it's practically a brand new laptop, but they'll probably have me sitting on the phone for hours and won't care if my laptop dies on me and I have to wait weeks for them to send stuff out to me.

Thank you so much for trying to help me, if this problem continues or gets worse I'll probably end up having to try something like this. Why can't things just work! Especially when they're new? Man, this is frustrating :(

Sounds like a defective battery.

If you try recharging: BE CAREFUL.

The reason for past trends of exploding laptops involves lithium ion batteries exploding.

If the battery overheats enough it'll go *boom*. If you do try recharging, monitor it to make certain it doesn't get too hot.

To prolong the lifespan of your battery (and assorted lithium ion batteries such as those found in cell fones) avoid leaving it in a discharged state. If the batteries dead & you leave it that way, its lifespan can be drastically reduced.

:ohshit:

I managed to get the problem fixed thankfully. I found this while searching google for similar problems, tried it and it worked. Thank you for all your advice :)
