has anyone else become VERY annoyed at the MANY-hour-long introductions to Final Fantasy games in which your character can basically do only one very specific thing scene after scene after scene?

i started playing FF1 back when it was first released on the NES. after a brief 2 minute excursion to see the king at the very beginning of the game, you were then able to actually able to go play the game. with FF2-3, the intros got longer before you felt you were actually playing the game and not just being lead through a long introduction. with FF7, they were even longer; it takes me about 6-8 hours of gameplay to finally get out into the overworld, where the babysteps end and you are finally on your own, more or less.

i have tried to play nearly all of the FF series games after 7, but i always get frustrated at the very very long intros and quit. the one with the flying volleyball game in particular: hour after hour of very restricted areas with only 1 or two monsters followed by 20 minute segments of unnecessary plot dialogue (does anyone even watch that stuff?)

maybe it's just me, but i really wish that the next FF game would make the restrictive intro much, much shorter. i can learn the many game options on my own. without having to waste 10 hours being babystepped through the intro.

... or maybe no one else agrees, and i'm just getting old... *sigh*

Only thing that really bugs me is unskippable tutorals, I can't even begin to express how much that annoys me. As for what your going on about, it doesn't bother me all THAT much although there have been times at the start of games where Im thinking I KNOW what Im doing just let me go and do what I want dammit (RW for example)........which I guess falls more into tutorials again >_>

I really liked the start of VII, I had no idea there even WAS a world map whern I first placed it, so imagine my surprise when I escape Midgar and I see my map with all those dots on it :wacky:

In short, no, it doesn't really bother me. Tutorials on the other hand DO :wacky:

Heh, you should try playing Kingdom Hearts 2. The introduction is really long.

But yeah, this doesn't bother me either. Actually I love introductions since it gives you that relaxed feeling before truly getting deeper into the storyline and plot. I love to explore the surroundings, checking every nook and cranny so I won't miss anything. Yes, I do take my time when it comes to introductions, believe it or not. In fact, I stall quite a lot.

I don't really mind tutorials either. I always seem to have a patience for them, and that's only because I want to know the battle system specifics as early in the game as possible. Sometimes I'll even read tutorials twice. You could say I'm a pretty laid-back gamer.

OH GOD, I absolutely hate that about KH2. It's worse than anything else in any other game in existence. I hate Twilight Town so, so, so much. x/

Me too, I was wracking my brains, I KNEW There was a beginning of a game that irritated the tits off me, and I kept thinking it was FFXII, but it was Twilight town....and to a lesser extent the island In KH......they annoyed me sooooo much

Twilight town really took the biscuit though, i was stuck in that hell hole for houuuuuurs

I especially hate it when you have to run around doing dumb errands. At least you do mildly relevant things on Destiny Islands, like making a dumb raft that doesn't end up working.

Long introductions don't really bother me. I enjoy the relaxed feel, knowing that I probably won't die and being able to appreciate the surroundings. Tutorials don't bother me too much either, unless I accidentally cause them to repeat THAT IS ANNOYING.

So the long introductions don't bother me too much, unless of course I've already beaten the game. In that case hearing the same long thing can get rather irritating.

The story intros don't bother me much because its kind of part of the story. The tutorials do. Not the first time of course, because then I'd like to know how everything works. But when I play it for the second third or whenever time, I'd really like the option of skipping the thing. In X you just watch the whole thing and if you accidentally press the wrong button you see it al again.
That annoy's me.

I wish you could skip the tutorials as you please (like in VIII), so that, for more experienced players, you can just fire on with the game and not wastefully re-learn everything you already know.

As for it taking far too long to get onto the world map, I do believe VII is the worst for that but, at the same time, you're pretty much on your own after the materia tutorial, so I think that was well done.

Well, the thing about VII is that a lot of important things happen in Midgar, as something resembling a plot is established, the characters (and villains) are introduced (with a few exceptions), etc.

Not like XII where they almost instantly boot you out into random deserts and such. :x

I don't even notice that the introductions are long... I'm generally too excited about the game itself, and too busy taking everything in. Considering a new battle system or leveling system is nearly always introduced, I also don't mind the tutorials. When I'm replaying a game it doesn't annoy me because I play so many games with so many different systems that it helps to get refreshed.

But I tend to look beyond the game itself and try to imagine the amount of work put into everything within it, which helps me appreciate everything, even if I start to get impatient or annoyed. I also appreciate the long introductions and tutorials... imagine if you were a new person to the FF series, it would help. That's what they're there for. Also, I don't find the dialogue in any FF game to be unnecessary...

I have to agree with the majority here. I actually think introductions are necessary if the game is to have a good plot. I actually enjoyed FFX's and FFXII's introductions. I think they were great because they introduced so many plot points that were expanded on during the course of the game.

It all again, depends if the opening is a bit pointless and feels more like hand holding than laying the foundations of the story (ff8 felt more like hand holding and not enough telling of the story)

I didnt mind 7 or 9 really as they both laid out the foundations to interesting stories, and I reckon if you were allowed to just do your own thing from the word go, you would have missed large parts of the plot and be left scratching your head as to whats going on.

Long introduction are not a problem for me, infact i rather enjoy them. They give good information if you really want to get into the game, they add that background knowlege. For example the opening scenes in Final Fantasy X didnt need to be there, you could have just been washed up at the Ruins. But then again you wouldn't have the same feelings for the game if you hadnt experienced Zanarkand being destroyed. Again in Final Fantasy IX the scenes when Garnet was on the boat looking up at the invincible, they didnt need to be there, but later on when she realises where she had seen the invincible before you get that "oh yeahh, i remember" feeling which allows you to be more involved in the game as if you actually experienced it too.

=]

As long as an introduction is not too complicated, a long one is fine for me. Because remember, I could be a new person playing their first FF game, so I'd want to know the basic ins and outs of things.
