Contradictory to the title of my post, the supposed "lost city of Atlantis" found on Google Ocean was dismissed by Google as "an artifact of the data collection process", and that the lines seen in the picture "reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data."

Now, I'm willing to believe that Google is telling the truth, but tell me what boat makes such straight lines and such precise turns. Look at the image, they're pretty sharp if you ask me.

Anyways, Atlantis or not, thought you might find this interesting.

Ah. I looked at this on my Google Earth after reading this a few days ago, it is pretty weird. It really does look like a city, you can kinda see like different wards of the city and whatnot.

I don't believe google at all. What are the chances of the "boat" being exactly where Plato said it'd be??
Come on.
I say Oceanographers should check it out anyway. Who's it gonna hurt? No one.

I read about this in the paper the other day. I must say I don't know what to make of it. I'm not convinced that it is Atlantis mainly because I'm a Thera theory supporter myself. :D

But it does seem to fit one of the areas popular by Atlantis theorists as a possible place for the site, off the coast near to Spain and the Azores I think this scan was taken.

They said in the article I read (sorry, I didn't have time to read this one yet) that the size was massive, larger than the size of Greater London. For an ancient city, let alone a prehistoric city that is pretty HUGE. But that further leads to support for the theory in some people, as Atlantis was described as huge also.

I'm not sure though, I'm never convinced when people claim they find Atlantis... It has happened in the past. I can't count how many articles I have read that are titled "Atlantis found!". Atlantis has became too mythologised, and Plato's account was mainly political, so I think it is dangerous to label any sunken city as Atlantis.

That said, google images could be right. This might not be a sunken city at all and it could just be a mark in the data processing. I don't know how their systems work myself, but its not impossible.
Either that, or Google are fibbing, so to send their own secret batch of underwater archaeologists to the deep to uncover the ruins themselves, and harness the power that spawned advanced civilisation, and further their conquest over the world!

I think I'll just wait and see.

Sunken city, perhaps. Plato's Atlantis? Who knows. I don't discourage people dreaming and exploring to find out, but I can't help but feel that it will be a wild goose chase to nothingness.

In my opinion, we have the technology to have found Atlantis by now if it's (still) there. I'm sure somebody knows by now.

Someone who commented on the article pointed out that the "roads" or "walls" or whatever the lines are, would have to be miles wide. The scale looks great until you take that into account. So I don't buy it, even though it would be pretty damned sweet if it was the real thing.

I agree that if it was a computing error, the lines wouldn't have been as straight, precise or sharp as they were. Whether or not it's Atlantis...is an entirely different story.

It might just have been a computing error, or it might actually be something of important historical value - it really should be thoroughly investigated, not just brushed aside as an error.

I agree with AG on this one, they should definitely check it out regardless of what it is. People have been searching for a major find like this their entire careers and usually come up empty. It would be nice if researchers were thrown a bone like this. It would give them something to study and understand. Plus it would finally answer some of the long standing questions and mysteries about Atlantis, assuming it is so.

I think it is definately worth a look, even if it comes to nothing. I think they should first of all test that area with all sorts of equipment, re-scan it etc, just to rule out it being an error.

If the same "structures" appear under the water, then that should be signal enough that something is down there and they should definately follow it up.

It would be interesting to see what it is if it isn't a city though, like a freak formation that by some odd chance looks like streets with a main road.

They can't lose anything by looking to see what it is, if anything. So it might not be Atlantis, it could still be some other city which would keep archeoligists happy for the rest of their naturals

No point brushing it off as an error if it could be something else, you won't discover anything that way, unless as said above Google are secretly plotting to uncover it themselves for the fame and glory :neomon:
