Update#1

Many Characters From Atelier Rorona Return In Atelier Meruru

We’ve already seen a bunch of characters from Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland in Atelier Meruru. Gust’s next game in the series and the final title in the Arland trilogy includes some of Rorona’s friends too. All pictures below are what the characters look like in Atelier Rorona.

Gio, one of the playable characters in Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland, returns. He’s 60-ish in Atelier Meruru.

Astrid, Rorona’s teacher, is in Atelier Meruru and she looks just like she did in Atleier Rorona.

Pamela also returns.

Sterk, the loyal knight, is now a dashing man nearing 40 in Atelier Meruru. He’s a playable character and so is Esty. She now supervises Geo in an Arland intelligence agency. In battle, Esty uses spears. Atelier Meruru: The Alchemist of Arland 3 does not have encounters on the world map. Players can also equip two accessories, which can have a dramatic affect on your characters.

Dengeki PlayStation revealed one new character. Juana, according to Yoshito Okamura, is a busty 17 year old girl who works at a general store.

Atelier Meruru Countdown: World Development Video

Day two in Gust's ten day countdown to Atelier Meruru's release brought with it a gameplay video showing the game's development component.

As a new feature for the PS3 Arland series (consisting of Atelier Rorona and Atelier Totori), Meruru lets you build up the game world. This video provides an introduction to the system, with textual commentary from director Yoshito Okamura (the dude in the lower right).

Atelier Meruru Director on Young Rorona and PlayStation Vita

Meruru (left) sits next to young Rorona.

Atelier Meruru is a sequel to Atelier Totori which is a sequel to Atelier Rorona. And yet, in Atelier Meruru, the Rorona character appears as a child, younger than both Totori and Meruru.

We're probably going to have to play Meruru for ourselves to learn how this fits into the game's story. But there's a deeper reason behind Rorona's eternal youth.

In a fan Q&A column posted today at Dengeki Online, director Yoshito Okamura revealed that the staff simply didn't want to see a 30-something Rorona.

The question posted to Okamura was "Whose idea was it to show Rorona in that form, and was there any opposition?". Okamura replied that the entire staff agreed that they didn't want to see an elderly Rorona. This was the full staff's opinion. The decision to keep Rorona young was made some time last summer, Okamura revealed.

Some of the questions on this matter got a bit weird, so I'll refrain from summarizing further.

How did Rorona turn herself into a child? Find out next week by playing Atelier Meruru!

Fans also asked Okamura about the possibility of porting the Arland series (this is the name for the PS3 Rorona, Totori and Meruru trilogy) to the PSP or PlayStation Vita. PSP would be technically impossible, replied Okamura. But Vita would be possible from a technical standpoint, and Gust is seriously looking into it.

Young VS Old Rorona -- You Decide!

The Atelier development staff has made their opinion clear: they don't want Arland sub series' main character Rorona getting too old.
Now you can let your voice be heard. Visit Gamespot Japan to vote on your preference of big Rorona or little Rorona.

The big Rorona, to the left, is the character as she appears in Atelier Totori, the second game in the Arland series. In that game, she appears as teacher to main character Totori. She's 22-years-old in that game.

The little Rorona, to the right, is the character as she appears in Atelier Meruru, the third game in the series, set for release later this week. While Meruru takes place after Totori, Rorona appears in child form for some as yet unexplained reason.

Vote on your favorite Rorona by clicking the green buttons in the Gamespot article. You'll be prompted to connect with Twitter.

Atelier Rorona Characters As They Appear In Atelier Meruru

Atelier Meruru: The Alchemist of Arland 3 has a handful of returning characters from Atelier Rorona, Gust’s first game in the Arland trilogy. Before we get to Sterk, take a close look at Juana.

Juana is one of Meruru’s and a new character in Atelier Meruru. She’s 17 year old girl who doesn’t worry about the little things and runs a general store in Earls.

Now 40, Esty is an intelligence agent in Arland. She oversees Gio and is a playable party member in Atelier Meruru.

(Atelier Rorona on left, Atelier Meruru on right)

Gio is considered Arland’s strongest swordsman. He’s sixty years old, but still a vagabond who recently wandered into Earls.

Sterk, 39, is a chivalrous knight. Still adventuring around the world, Sterk runs into Meruru by chance.

Awesome stuff here.

I finished Rorona not too long ago and started Totori. I need to find some time to finish it, but I did pre-order the limited edition of Meruru. Totori was definitely a huge improvement over Rorona though, so Im excited for the final game in the trilogy

The artwork I've seen for this series is absolutely stunning, which really makes me want to buy and try this game. However, I do have some reservations. :hmmm:

What's the gameplay and story like? I've heard that the story is essentially a slice-of-life, with very few major plot developments. Moving around the levels looks similar to Valkyrie Profile, whilst the battle system reminds me of...well, your typical turn-based RPG. ;) If the gameplay is interesting and dynamic and the story is good, I'll give it a go! :D

Hmm, if you are someone who likes to micromanage, then definitely go for it. Id say about 75% of Rorona was alchemy related and the other 25% was battles.

This changed with Totori though. It's more even, but you still need to be able to manage your time. Id say it's more 50% battles, 50% alchemy. But the battle system is better and runs more smoothly.

That being said. The battle system is simple IMO. It isnt the greatest battle system but it gets the job done. Which is fine.

It is more slice of life. They arent epic, lets save the world, type games. Just more personal stories involving the characters. Yeah you have cliched characters at times (but seriously, what game or story doesnt) but I think each character has their own personality and they are displayed well. It's a charming series.

And like you said, the art style is phenomenal. Rorona's character models werent real great, but Totori's (and Meruru's) are much much improved. (As well as the new game that just got announced. It seriously almost looked drawn).

Id say if you are into gaming for a nice, personal, laid back story with an alright battle system. Definitely go for it. Ive enjoyed them so far and Im 2/3 of the way through Totori.
