Asian Cinema Anyone

Oh yeah, i was pretty messed up after seeing Visitor Q, theres a lot of wrong things in that film....., i think i watched Ichi The Killer just afterwards, that probs didn't help, i think i was doing a Asian cinema marathon, i can't remember...

Itchi was rather interesting story wise, though we did had a huge argument over it as everyone got the ending differently......though skipped the few really gross parts as I cannnot stand hooks and crap like that... managed to turn my stomack indeed...

Old Boy is absolutelly brilliant.

Did not like Lady Vengence that much...good film, but rather dragged out at some points though the ending was good. My friend bought recently another one, Into The Mirror, that is an good one too.

I loved Casshern...awesome...:D

I watched Versus the other day too again, ...clever twist, hilarious at some points, ....though we had discussion again over the ending, tipical...everyone gets their own version of the ending...:D

I watched this myth collection a week ago, Japanese myths, my boyfirend lend it to me, really good....damn, cannot remember the name of the film itself...anyway, it has 4 stories/myths in it: Black Hair, Snow Woman, Man in the Tea Cup and the last one was about the monk...damn, that was best one, but cannot remember the name of that one, sorry.

The one with tea was just bloody weird and creepy and it kind of the whole thing went over my head; I did not get it, think noone got it really.

Dark Water is good, and The Tale of the Two Sisters as well...

Of course I like the big blockbusters like Hero and HOTFD and CTHD and last one we went to see actually in the cinema was the Curse of the Golden Flower, and that was damn dark and depressive...

I have seen Seven Samurai and Yojimbo ages ago, literally...Val lend me couple of other old samurai movies though kill me now, cannot remember the names of all of them,..I think one was When The Last Sword is Drawn, something along those lines. I quite liked Fearless too, inetresting life story. What else, C. Socker yes, K.F. Hustle yes too, hilarious both. I have seen the Ring movies, seen Audition and Grudge too, though did not found Grudge that creepy, found Audition much more creepier....what else, Battle Royale yes, though not interested in the second one, apparently is crap anyway...

My mind goes blank now...

That myth colcection thing sounds cool, and i was gonna pick up Lady Vengence at my local game store a week ago, but i ended up getting Shindler's List...i heard its like a female version of OldBoy...
And yeah Ichi The Killer is kinda sick, but i love it anyway xD

Lady Vengence is good...it is not a bad film, but it is very confusing at some points, and dragged out...though the ending is worth the wait, very good ending indeed.

I'll ask Val the name of that myth collection and post it up later :)

I seen Azumi and Azumi 2 too..forgot about that...prefered the first one though...:)

That myth collection, (since Val was very nice to reply with the name straight away :D) is called Kwaidan, and he gave me a link too .. but for some stupid reason I cannot not put it up..just look it up on Wikipedia, that what the link was for....

A list of Asian films I've seen is as follows (I might miss some out); Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Thone of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Kagemusha, Ran, Dreams (all are Kurosawa films), Samurai Trilogy, Samurai Assassin, The Sword of Doom, Samurai Rebellion, Ringu trilogy, Audition, Grudge, Azumi 1 & 2, When The Last Sword Is Drawn, Twiligh Samurai, Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer, Ichi the Killer, Zatoichi, Battle Royale, Casshern, Dark Water, The Happiness of the Katakuris, Kwaidan, Zipang, Red Shadow, Tetsuo The Iron Man, Old Boy, Lady Vengence, A Bittersweet Life, Infernal Affairs, MPD Psycho, Shogun (both these two are mini series). I've seen lots of anime too but can't be bothered to mention them now. if I did miss any, it'll probably be old films that are less known.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
I enjoyed this film. The music was beautiful, the story was quite unique and the characters were somewhat compelling. It was very representative at the end, and more symbolic. I love Asian films for that. =] I really enjoyed the part in the desert. Hilarious and cute at the same time!

Hero
This was highly artistic. Quite confusing at times, and a little samey throughout, but the music's nice, and the colours used are so vibrant. (Yes I talk about art and colours too much xP) I can't remember a lot about the story, which says a little something about how much I enjoyed it. =/

House of Flying Daggers
One of my favourite films of all time! Very artistic, and the music is simply spectacular. The story's pretty nice, too, and I really did feel for the characters. The shots and scenery are all so beautiful, the action is awesome and there's so much meaning in this film. At least I thought so. =]

Seven Swords
Blood, gore, death, beheadings, fighting, rape... Ooh, this wasn't beautiful. xD But it was a good film.

Memoirs of a Geisha
I think this is Asian anyways. xD I love the artistic theme in it. It's certainly highly symbolic. The scenery is nice, as I said with many of the others. I do find Asian films tend to have a lot in common. Almost all but the story. Symbolism, beautiful music, lovely scenery...

Zhou Yu's Train
Confusing... I couldn't tell what was going on half the time. Probably my leasy favourite. But...erm...Symbolic...

What a monotonous post...

Geez, i will never have enough time to watch all these films xD

That trailer for Kwaidan looks awsome, 1965?, its looking pretty spectacular for a film from 1965, i bet the atmosphere is brilliant..., i like the some of the artful scenes, like the field of flowers and the snow covered woods....i bet nothing like this ever came out of hollywood during the smae period....

Oh and i did see Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, immensely choreographed fight scenes, no thought provoking story or characters, but that wasnt the point....i like it when Li Mu Bei almost deflects all of Jade Fox's poison needles, skill....10/10

You MUST watch House of Flying Daggers. It's simply beautiful, as I said. The action scenes aren't as cool as the ones in Crouching Tiger, but the story is so much better. The best story in any Asian film I've seen, I think. =]

I actually think Crouching Tiger wasn't as good as Flying Daggers. I also liked Fearless too. And Curse of the Golden Flower was a very good film also.

Flying Daggers is better then Croutching Tiger, Val I agree :D...not to mention at I cried my bloody eyes out...

The Curse of the Golden Flowers is the most depressive and darkest of all those block busters...

I saw Twilight Samurai too didn't I...keep on fogetting what I saw and did not saw...

I thought Memoirs of Geisha is a hollywood film...not actually Asian film...I have it, and it is even in english......but I thought it is not actually under Asian cinema....

I've seen The Curse of the Golden Flowers, and I must agree that is indeed depressing, but a good movie nonetheless. There were so many secrets and conspiracies amongst family members, that you wonder who is really in it for justice or just for revenge.

Memoirs of A Geisha
is also a favorite, even if it's an American film. Still, the setting was that of an Asian culture. I've only seen it once, and although it was a long movie, every single moment of it was memorable. The scenes were well done, and the environment was spectacular.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was a pure delight. Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh did a great performance, not only with martial arts, but as well as drama.

Hero was definitely interesting to watch. It starts out as confusing, but as the story progresses, you then get a glimpse of each and every character's true motives. Truly a suspense.

House of Flying Daggers
was one of those that I really enjoyed as well. I love Zhang Ziyi and adore her immensely. The story and characters were both riveting.

There's more, but those are the ones that really stands out. I'll be sure to check out some of the titles that you guys have mentioned.

Now see, this is what I like about Asian films. It is somewhat mysterious and gives you the impression that a certain character is the villain, when he or she is really the victim. They twist the plots and make the movie an enjoyable ride for everyone.

Tell us if it's any good. I need to watch more Asian films, too. =]

Audition:

Well, i saw it now, and it was a bit different from Miike Takashi's other films, (i only saw Ichi The Killer and Visitor Q)....
I will try not to give anything away, in any case, it will be less spoilers than the ones already written on the box....i got the special ed, and it has two side of writing, damn.
Anyways, in the first half of the film you get know the main character really well......obviously with you excpecting to see something disturbing at any minute, you get incredibly restless as an hour passes with the characters just talking.

As for the role of Asami, the second main character, she seemed innocent enough, but throught you discover how messed up she actually is, but maybe not evil,....
a lifetime of abuse from men in generall
had caused her to become incredibly fragile but at the same time, when vengeful, horribly sadistic, this is portrayed by the actress incredibly well....
Asami just waiting there for the phone to ring, was disturbing.
you almost don't mind when she does the horrible things she does, almost....

Its also very disturbing to see her, a very innocent person to do those things...and how she does them with such apathy.

Also the sack scene, i found very disturbing, more so even than some of the scenes in Visitior Q
the way that man was probably confined to that sack for over a year.....and he obviously went mad, losing his humanity....oh and how Asami fed him with bowls of her own vomit...that was very wrong,

Well, i tried not to give any of the story away,....and i overused the word 'disturbing', i couldn't help it though.

Overall, 8/10...
A disturbing film, (sorry again) but only because it shows the extreme potential for people to go nuts when abused by others, duh,....and maybe it shows the full extent of selfishness of people.......hmmm, and maybe im just talking out of my ass and probably had missed the point of this film, like i did with Visitor Q...
