You don't need an AR-15 to defend yourself. A handgun or shotgun works just fine.

It may not stop massacres, but it will most likely make them more rare.

They certainly are. And many of the measures that are being proposed aren't adding new laws, but simply enforcing those that are already on the books. And/or funding agencies properly in order to enforce laws.
