So hosers, how are we celebrating Canada Day? Fireworks? BBQ's? Well, some of us lucky sobs get to celebrate it with the birth of the HST.
BC and Ontario are receiving the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) which is basically a combination of the PST and the GST (however GST seems to be still labeled as an individual tax for now). Anything that wasn't taxed by PST before, will now see an increase in tax of up to 13-15%. Grocery stores, restaurants, and any basic food industry will receive full taxes of up to 13-15%, whereas before they were just 7%. Home hardware stores, furniture stores, renovations and buying a home would potentially cost thousands of dollars more now.
Quite frankly, I'm not at all impressed by this. I'm broke and can't afford to do shit, atm, but in a couple months time (hopefully when/if I get a job) I had plans to buy a new bedroom set, move out into a nice little apartment and buy some deec' furniture... but now that's all gone to shite if it's going to cost nearly 10% more.
