I do not intend to create a livejournal post or nothing but I do need some advice on this matter. I alwys considered myself to be something of an anime fan but compared to most people (and even this forum), I don't know if I can still keep this title. I have seen my fair share of anime where admittedly I saw most of it either Cartoon Network, HBO, ABC Family, Movieplex, YouTube or some other channel or website and they were mostly dubs but compared to people who actually breath anime and know a little something about the culture, I don't if I can consider myself that. I know a lot about anime I enjoy but I don't if this is enough or anything since some anime I barely finished. I just want to ask is it the quality of what anime ytou know or the quantity? I don't know if this question had been asked but I am asking it and I hope to find some thoughts on this.

I understand your question but may I ask why you need this answered?

If you actually want to be a raging great otaku, then quantity is the major factor here. If you wish to enjoy anime moderately, and you consider yourself a mild fan, then quality is the major factor. There's not a very fine line between the two.

I felt as though that I may not be as big of a fan like anyone else since I didn't create any fansites, drawn fanart, have paraphenalia or didn't watch as much anime as anyone. I have seen my fair share of anime but when I come to forums and see people talk about it with detail, I don't know if I an be like that or if I am a good enough fan. I enjoy anime regardless whether it is subbed or dubbed but I don't have any of that stuff or maybe I am just comparing myself to other people or something.

You don't need to be the biggest anime fan on the planet in order to be a fan of it. Being a fan doesn't require that you partake in cosplay events, create fanart and bathe in a pool of anime merchandise. If you enjoy watching, then that's enough. I don't think it comes down to quality and quantity.

What do you mean by the quality? :gasp:
If it's a High or low like videos (MKV, Avi . . . etc) then I never cared about that I just care about watching it, however if you mean by that the story, characters . . . etc then yea that is a major factor in my opinion, I won't complete an anime that I never liked the story of it or the characters.
And about the quantity I don't have much anime but I watched much I watched around 70 but I only have around 30 of them :/ so I dunno, and just like VoN said you don't need to be the biggest fan on the planet O_O I never went to a cosplay or drawn a favorite anime character :P

I agree with Von here. I'm a fan of anime myself, yet I don't go around daydreaming and creating anime artworks just so I can deem myself worthy enough to be a true anime fan. You can't compare yourself to other people because some are quite subtle when it comes to showing others how much they love anime, while there are also those who just can't wait to tell the whole world that they breath and live for the anime world or something. :wacky: It isn't about quality or quantity either because everyone has their own preferences. Some likes OVA, while others prefer anime that has over 50 episodes.

I'd always say, a person who goes for Quantity is the TRUE fan. There's nothing to be gained by watching mediocre shows and boasting around saying: "I'm da fan! I watch all the animez111one!one!"

I personally am one of those "anime obsessed" people. But being a fan, and being totally obsessed with anime are two different things.

You're no less of a fan than I am, even if you just watch the GOOD stuff, while I watch mostly everything I can get my hands on XD

And I know how it's like when people try to say: "Hey you didn't even watch that show, your opinion doesn't count, you're not even a real anime fan". But those people are just immature, and don't let that get to you!

I agree with Von here. I'm a fan of anime myself, yet I don't go around daydreaming and creating anime artworks just so I can deem myself worthy enough to be a true anime fan.

Heeeey! >_>

Doing art is fun XD, I mean I do it... but not for the sake of proving my anime fandom XD

Its all a matter of personal opionon over which you prefer and I've seen mild fans go for Quatity over Quality but like I said its a matter of opinon.

Me myself I'm a balance between the two, I like to watch something that catchs my attention and I enjoy but I also like to be able to watch alot of different animes at the same time regardless of how good they are. I'm no Anime master fan but nor am I a novice when it comes to anime.

Oh yeah, that's fine and there's a lot of people who does it just for fun and not to prove their anime fandom. I'm just saying that I think others are getting the wrong impression that in order to be truly considered an "anime fan", your mind and artworks has to be filled with anime, anime, and more anime. =/ My point is that anyone can be a fan of anime even if they don't always talk about anime daily. As I stated previously, quantity or quality, it doesn't matter to me.

Agreed. I consider myself a mild fan. Anime is fun to watch, but basing your whole life around it is sad. (See typical weeaboo who tries to be "Japanese" and fails hopelessly)
It's not because it's Japanese, it's because it's quality animation, which Japan has exported to the world. Also more entertaining than alot of western cartoons and television, when it comes down to it.
When it comes to shows, I prefer a balance of quantity and quality, and the two might come hand in hand. I like shows to be long enough to break the suspense, and filled with juicy goodness. I also don't like it when animation quality is put above plot content. Pretty much the same for any entertainment. Excesively fattening up shows with meaningless crap, on the other hand, isn't very entertaining either. If you're going to put alot in a show, most of it should have a point to it. In essence, content:filler ratio should be at least 4:1, or something like that. It should go for all entertainment.
