I have an unofficial guidebook (so unofficial that it was included with a gaming magazine) which includes a list of all the materia and their locations. It says the Alexander summon materia is in Gaea's Cliffs on disc one, but the walkthrough itself doesn't mention it, nor have i ever found it. So does the materia actually exist? And if it does, where the hell is it?

Yea, it does. It's when you're in that freaking blizzard. I've never gotten it. You only have 20 minutes or something like that down there and it's this big maze of a place. Apparently it's right in the middle but I've never gotten to it or found it. Kinda sucks. Maybe I should look up that summon on FF Compendium...
Yeah, Alexander's definitely there. There's a cave on the Eastern side (I think) with a woman dressed in purple. Apparently, you fight her and she drops the Alexander materia. Unfortunately she would only ever say "...." to me and that's all. I have a friend who managed to fight her though and he has Alexander
When in the blizzard, you have to travel North until you reach a sort of... hut. Turn East from there and you'll eventually find the cave. However I do believe there's something about using an item, and the woman reacts to it. She takes the roll of an optional boss, but isn't anything special. Few hits and she's down. I don't even think Alexander is all that strong, but it's probably worth getting anyway.
Sorry to say, I can't clarify whether you actually need an item like I said. It just popped into my head... and if you DO need the item, chances are you'll probably already have it.
