Hi there,

I have ordered a PS2 online and FFX just to play this game again for only the 1st time since my only play through when it was first released.

Anyway, I'm looking at the FFX manual (I don't have my PS2 yet) and I notice that there is 2 sphere grid options.
So whats the difference between standard and advanced grid? I think I chose standard when I played last time.

My second question is about side quests and aeons. I plan on capturing all the secret aeons so is there a point of no return for any aeons or side missions?

For example could I advance the story to a certain stage where I can't go back for a secret (non story) aeon or can't complete a side quest?

Any other help or advice you want to add would be great too. For example is there anyone you say you MUST have in your party? I remember leaving Yuna out until near the end and she advanced very quickly with some mean spells, so I'm gonna use her all the time I think and not just use her when I need aeons.

The difference between the Advanced and Standard Sphere Grid is that Advanced offers more freedom of movement, whereas Standard mostly forces you to follow a single path of nodes. With Advanced, you can branch, say, Tidus off to Auron's path quite early on, and then take him on to Wakka's etc etc. It's quite useful to be able to do this I found, however you will miss out on some useful skills/spells by doing this. It really depends on how you want that character to perform in battle.

Personally, I'd recommend that you use Advanced this time around. It just means you'll get a lot more to work with.

Once you get the freedom to do so, you're able to obtain the secret Aeons at any point in time. You have to do it in a certain order, but it's not difficult to work that out when you're making your attempts at it. As for side-quests, you can obtain an additional Overdrive ability for Valefor as you're leaving Besaid; if you don't get it on that occasion, your path will be barred when you have the freedom to re-visit later on in the game (will only be difficult to re-enter Besaid village if you're using the International Version). It's really quite strong so it's worth getting anyway. For how to get it:

After you fight Kimahri not long after leaving the village, return to the village and talk to the shop keeper. Don't buy anything and opt to 'leave' - she'll mention something about her dog bringing him something slimy. Along the right hand-side of the screen, enter the northern-most house and speak to the dog. Valefor will learn Energy Blast.

Other tips.... as soon as you get a Black Magic Sphere, use it on Yuna to teach her one of Lulu's existing spells. As these spheres are, at the earliest point of obtaining them, quite rare, you might want to hold off using one/them all until Lulu learns her -aga spells. Or you can use them on Lulu so she can learn Wakka's Drain and/or Osmose (the latter being the most useful). On a related note, remember to Overkill the boss 'Evrae'. ;]

Thanks for that post. Very useful. I had forgot how much there was to do in this game. I really can't wait to get stuck into it again. I forgot about all the different sphere types, the overdrives and lots of other things until a few days ago.

I'd love another game like FFX, but its so unique I don't think there is one or ever will be one like it. I'd settle for another FF game with the same turnbased battle system. But thats a seperate debate, I know not many agree lol.

Thanks again for the info, I'm sure I'll be re opening this post as I'm playing :)

Don't forget to pick up the Destruction Spheres in the temples - if you forget and miss them (I ALWAYS miss the one in Besaid) you may have a nasty surprise in the shape of a dark aeon when trying to re-enter the temples later, namely Macalania and Besaid - you can get into the others no problem bar Bevelle which you can only enter once - though you can't leave that temple without the destruction sphere anyway...

You won't be able to get Anima without them, and I think that also means you won't be able to get the Magus Sisters as well, though I could be wrong.... you certainly won't be able to get the required item off Belgemine for Yunas celestial weapon though :hmmm:

I thought that the Dark Aeons appeared whatever you did? I got all the destruction spheres, got Anima and the Magus Sisters, but I still get a bollocking from Valefor and Shiva...

Oh BTW, you CANNOT, I repeat: CANNOT (and I mean CANNOT) return to Bevelle or Bevelle TEMPLE, and I think you will want/need the Destrution Sphere/treasure to capture a secret Aeon. (or do whatever you wanna do in Bevlle again) :)

As Kelly/Smith #2 said, you HAVE to get Bevelle's destruction sphere. I'm almost positive that it's impossible to not get it, so you can't miss it. You do need it for a secret aeon (Technically two, ALSO as Kelly said, as you need Anima to get the Magus Sisters... I think.)

I wouldn't say there's anyone you MUST have in your party... but I tend to try and build everyone up as equally as I can and it hasn't messed me up yet. :3 I would suggest picking someone else other than Yuna and Lulu to turn into a mage and teaching them the -aga spells, Holy, Flare, and Ultima. (Perhaps Kimahri, I think he's got the next highest magic, but I'm not sure. I always use Rikku because she's fast, personally.) It's also not needed but very fun to make Yuna and Lulu strong enough to be able to kill things by attacking... or I'm just really odd. :sad2: I generally teach Auron haste too... just because he's so useful but so slow.

Finally got to the end of the game now, the final boss. I decided to make 2 saves, one to go on to the end and the other to do side quests.
Now I realise I need to do the side quests, for some reason, even though I seem quite highly leveled when the final boss turns into his 2nd form I get killed before I even get a chance to attack.

Anyway I noticed that the first thing I need to do is get my cloudy mirror unclouded, I can't seem to find the people that I need to.
What is the quickest route? I seem to be wandering randomly around macalania?
The last thing that is frustrating me is the boss outside Baaj Temple. Even If I was to level Wakka, Rikku and Tidus up a lot I can't see this boss being beatable.

It's so weird, I've done this game and the sidequests in the past and don't ever remember getting stuck like this.

To kill the boss at Baaj temple I personally like to use an ability called spare change, (I think it's called that.) Then I basically throw everything I got at it and if you haven't got the ultimate weapons then the damage limit will be 9999 so make sure you only use 99990 gil at a time so you don't waste gil. The only problem with this is that it's very costly!

I took that Baaj boss on rather early, I managed it buy learning/casting auto life and making sure I had stone proof on my equipment, go in with full over drives

Cloudy mirror :hmmm: Right, theres the woman and her son at the south end, talk to those 2 til you establish she is waiting for her husband, he's near the campsite, it's oneof the turn offs near the calm lands I think. Talk to him, he will return to his wife. Follow him and talk to the couple, they will then say their son has wandered off. He's on the crystal path. talk to him, then go power up your mirror at that dead end on the path

Really wish the Dark Aeons would have been included in the NA version of this game. you guys are lucky. Oh, and you do need to get Anima in order to acquire the Magus Sisters.
