So. In a couple months I'm gonna have knee surgery, and I won't be able to leave my bed for a good 2-3 months. I'll need SOMETHING to do. My Wii? Dead to me.... bar the old nes games. Besides, I think it's time I invested in a good new platform for me to busy myself with anyway.

I had a 360, but the boy took it with him home (technically it was his Christmas present...). He left me with the one 360 game I actually liked and wanted... Eternal Sonata. I have my own gamertag I can recover if I get a new 360, and I had downloaded a few arcade games (not sure if I can recover those) but I'm just not sure if I want to go down that route again...

I'm leaning towards a PS3 because I want to rekindle my love for FF.. download them on PSN and just sit and have a go at them all while I stuck in a cast. But I need to be schooled in what I can, and can't do on the PS3.

Questions like "Do the new/up to date models of PS3's play PS2 games? (I only have the PS2 FF's and Xenosaga series I'd want to play on it anyway)".. ..."Can they play the PS1 games? (I'm.. fairly certain on this that they can.)"......"What's the PSN like? Is it near identical to the XBL where you buy your points and have monthly subscriptions? Does it had points or do you just pay with regular people money?"

I'm pretty up to date on what's released.. most of everything has been multi-platform released, so I'm fairly confident on anything that I'm looking for I can find on PS3 versus 360 only... besides, 360 doesn't even really have that many exclusive games anyway.

So. Who can help me out here? What am I best going with? Oh. And just for standard downloading of the FF's and not much else, I'll be good for a standard HD, right? I don't think I need to fork over the extra dough for 500 terabytes or shit. :wacky:

No, they don't. Sony made the move to take PS2 compatibility out of the PS3. Only certain old models of fat PS3 play PS2 games.

..."Can they play the PS1 games? (I'm.. fairly certain on this that they can.)"......
Well, I think every PS3 has PS1 compatibility. But the compatibility, I think, isn't necessarily guaranteed to play every PS1 game.

Yes every PS3 is compatible with PS1 games. Also PSN and XBL are very similar. The main difference is that PSN is free and XBL has some cool exclusive features. Either way you can't go wrong with either one but since you're already subscribed to XBL I would go for the 360. Just take a look at the exclusives you would be interested in buying first before making a decision though. But since most people here have a PS3 that should give you something to think about as well. If you need to, flip a coin.

As a owner of both (and also the Wii: my parents get upset if I get bored) I may as well state my opinion.

Truthfully, I'd go for the PS3. While you may have a gamertag on XBL already, 360 only has a few exclusive games, namely the Halo series, and most of the rest your better off with PS3. PS3 has better graphics, free online, and if you buy one the old ones, the ability to play any and all PS games that you own, including PS2.

Still though, your decision.

Hrm.. Well regarding XBL, I only ever had my gamer tag and bought a few games.. my subscriptions ran out ages ago, using the ex's most of the time since he horded it.

So.. regarding the old PS3's who play the PS2's and the newer ones.. Obviously, they aren't slim. Obviously, they'll have smaller HD's, which it shouldn't be that big of a deal for me (how big are the PSN games to download anyway?). Other than those two facts, what are some other glaring things that would maybe persuade me into getting a newer PS3?

Well you can always change the hard drive later if you want, though I am still not sure how yet.

Do you still have a PS2? If so then just buy a Slim PS3. It cheaper and you get a new warranty to go with it. If you buy a BC PS3 then really all you're doing is saving space since they're much more expensive than the Slim PS3s.

Also it depends on the game. But usually no more than 1GB

I do have a PS2, but I was hoping to save on space.. >_> But if the newer Slim's aren't really expensive.. Is a BC PS3 gonna set me back? Is it just because they're harder to find and more sought after then?

Get a slim PS3 and keep the PS2? Since the slim PS3 is smaller than the fat PS3, it kind of already defeats the problem.

Personally I'd just recommend getting a $300 PS3 Slim and keeping the PS2. Having a PS2 is honestly the best form of BC if you ask me.

I suppose you're right. I just wanted to try and save as much space as I could regarding cables, AV inports and all that jazz. But if it's a slim chance of even getting a BC PS3 to play the games I want.. I guess I should hang onto it. >.<

Pretty much yes. Since Sony stopped manufacturing the BC models and since it is still in high demand it will be expensive, even for a used model, it costs at least the same price for a Slim, add a few hundred more if you want an unopened PS3. Even then the warranty may have expired and while you can buy another warranty, the Slim already comes with one anyway. Believe me even if space may be a problem, you will save a lot more money by just buying a Slim.

Hrm.. Alrighty then, so we've defined the pros and cons of that ordeal.

Now regarding PSN and XBL... PSN is free? Wat?

It costs by the month for using the 360 service, in form of XBox Live cards or however the payment system. But with the PSN, well I think you only pay for things you want to buy... if this makes any sense.

Really? So accessing the internet and browsing and doing whatever the heck you want is perfectly free, and you only pay per game?

Yep, PSN is free. And while people say the quality of PSN is not as good as XBL I don't really see a difference. The only thing is that PSN is missing out on a few features that XBL has like Party Chat and Zune but otherwise it is still a good bargin since it is free and there are no Friend Codes.

Huh, well, PS3 is starting to look a lot better in my eyes now.

So regarding game exclusives.. Most games are shared between the two these days.. other than the Halo series, what does 360 own exclusively? What does the PS3 own exclusively? Just to name a couple.

360-only games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Xbox_360-only_games

Quite a couple of lists they have there, huh?

Also, on some occasions a game, despite being on both systems, might be a little better on one system than the other.

Xbox 360

Halo(Of course)
Gears of War
Fable
Lost Odyseey
Tales of Vesperia

PS3

Uncharted
LittleBigPlanet
Fat Princess
Valkyria Chronicles
Metal Gear Solid 4

Just to name a few. But since most games are multiplatform, as I said before you can't really go wrong with either one you choose.

Edit: Stop ninjaing me! >_> But yes, go with his list that is much easier.

How big a deal is online multiplayer functionality to you? Do you plan to play online at all or are you primarily a single player gamer? The primary function of the Xbox Live gold subscription is that it allows you to play with others online. Sure it includes some other nice features as well, but online multiplayer is the main one. So if you aren't much of an online gamer, a silver subscription (which is free) would probably tie you over.

Personally I'm an Xbox owner through and through. While there may not be many games which are exclusive to either console any more, there's still nothing about the PS3 I would trade Mass Effect or Fable for.

I'm not a huge online multiplayer tbh. And after looking at that list, the only games I'll really miss are Bomberman and Portal.. wait.. Portal's on PS3, right?

I don't think I ever bought a gold subscription for my 360 when I had it.. just used the free month, and then that was it.
