Today, after hours of hard work playing the card game in Final Fantasy VIII, I started my first attempt ever at maxing stats in a FF game (except for level I am usually more bother with other aspects of the game). So after some card modding, item creation, heavy usage of power ups and the right allocation of GF abilities, Squall's strength goes up to 255 and stays there. No Str Up, junction or whatever makes it higher. Since his hit rate is 255%, I assume this is the maximum value a stat can have in Final Fantasy VIII (or any FF at all?).

Does anyone know why 255? Why not 100? For some strange reason that would make a lot more sense to me (index number or something like that).

And also, what are your thoughts about stat maxing? Like it or too much work?

In most FF games, stat maxing is way too much hard work. It's only really easy in FFVIII. xD I think 255 is the max for stats, rather than 100, so that there is a bigger leveling curve, rather than going from 10-50 really quickly and then being uber strong. Or something like that. xD

Too much work. Like Stevie said, VIII made it easy with the junctioning. All you needed was 100 ultimas and poof, a stat was maxed. In previous games, you had to train for an uber long time, which felt way too tedious.

I think 100 is just like round about average, give or take 25 or so here and there, i guess its just like giving the persistent folk amongst us something painstaking to aim for, I agree with Stevie that its a peice of piss to stat max on FFVIII, the only other game Ive bothered stat maxing on is FFX, I wont raise my stats beyond what I need to kill super bosses, there's just no point, hours and hours of training AFTER Ive beaten all the hard boss efforts? Nothanks. Im not one to stat max first either, Il keep retrying said super bosses til I can take them on, train some more, retry etc, otherwise it just becomes a chore, that and if you are maxed out, it just makes it too easy and thus, boring

The answer is very simple. In binary 255 is 11111111 basically the biggest number you can make with 8 Flip Flops. (A Flip Flop is a type of electrical device used to store memory. Commonly found in Ram chips.)

As for how I play. I get 50% elemental absorption and make all status effects go to 30% or higher.
Also if I remember correctly there are certain spells that helps the stat.
STR: tornado (Normal increase is around 70-80)
Vitality: Meltdown (Normal increase is around 150-200)
Magic: Quake (Normal increase is around 60-70)
Spirit: Can't quite remember
SPD: Stop (Normal increase is around 100)
EVA: Ultima (stop works good also but ultima is the only way to get 255.)
Hit: Triple (Normal increase is around 300%)
luck: 0.0 I forgot again.

It's way too much work for me, I think the only game I got close to doing that in was, of course FFVIII. In other games it takes an incredible amount of time and effort, and most of the time you don't even need to get close to being maxed out to beat mandatory bosses. I guess if you wanted to complete the game by doing absolutely everything, then you could max them out, but as of now for me I usually don't do the extremely hard bosses.

I think another game where I did that was FFX, I trained a bit too much before
the Seymour Flux boss
because I knew it was coming, and I completed the sphere grid but I didn't fill in the blank spheres.

Actually I really haven't maxed out stats in FF and I've beaten all of the superbosses. I'm gonna go game by game:

FFVII: I wasn't even level 99 when I beat Ruby and Emerald, much less maxed out. The trick to beating these superbosses is having the right materia combo.

FFVIII. I only maxed out two stats. Strength and Vitality, although Magic Defense was quite high also and I beat Omega Weapon just fine (in any case his strongest and most lethal attack ignores the vitality stat).

FFIX: You can technically max out stats, but it involves staying at a low level until you get access to the best stat increasing equipment. Not worth it in my opinion and you can still beat Ozma just fine.

FFX: Here is the one and only game in which it is necessary to max out stats if you want to beat the optional superbosses. But it really isn't as tedious as in other games (like FFVIII or FFVII).

FFXII: There is no way to max stats here. Your characters will be the best they can be when they hit level 99.

That would make sense! I can't think of any other reason why to pick the number 255.

I also just just maxed Strength and Vitality. On top of that, I had Quake junctioned to elemental defence (without any knowlegde of Omega Weapon's attacks), so he healed me with every Earthquake spell he used.

With maxed Vitallity and Auto-Protect on Squall every physical attack was a laugh. This was probably the first and the last attempt on stat maxing I'll attempt. The fun doesn't outweigh the work you have to do.

Shell/protect
Ultima

Full-life
Place these into your ele-def stat and you should have 80% elemental absorption in all areas.

I've always wondered about the significance of 255...I thought it was a lucky number in Japan, or something. Well, at least it is something more significant than that. XD

As for maxxing stats...I rarely ever bother with that, unless I absolutely have to, or a boss annoys me to the point where I want to overkill them to feel better about losing to them so spectacularly in the first place. That hasn't happened in an FF game yet, excluding FFX, because I refused to use Zanmato on the Dark Aeons. But maxxing stats in FFX is an absolute nightmare...especially Luck...I'll NEVER max Luck out, and my main file has a playtime of over 300 hours on it...

I hadn't thought of that! :gonk:

Stat maxing is great! That way, you can destroy the final boss in a few strikes. It's not really something that I do often, but I've done it on FF8 and FF10. It can be quite tedious, but worth it if you're really into the game.

I've never maxed out my stats in any games, because I have only ever lost boss battles in FFVII and they were the optional bosses and I didn't have KotR or Mime or Quadra or whatever it was at the time.

I maxed out stats in 7 (by morphing in the ship) and in 10 (by spending a fuck load of time training in the coliseum) 10 was easy though, i could just watch tv and spam x to quick hit the monster dudes until their stupid amounts of hp were depleted. Speaking of stupid amounts of hp, Yiazmat anybody? Like, omfg.com much?

Ikr.

If you use a return sphere on the area that you just unlocked you can gain dummy levels. in effect in 10 there are bosses that i beat in one hit that allowed me to level up 2 times.
