Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII are up on Steam…but not for public download. The two Steam games are based on their PC ports in 1998 and 2000 respectively, with a few modifications made to their files in an attempt to get them to run better on modern PCs.
The report comes from RPG Site, who came across the two games using the Steam Registry Editor.

The Registry Editor is currently the only known way to even view the game files. Interestingly, Square Enix had tinkered with them as recently as 2010, to try and make them compatible with modern operating systems, but to no avail.

This news doesn’t necessarily mean the two games will be seeing a Steam release of course, but it is interesting to know that this was, at some point, under consideration.

Steam? I don't think I ever heard of that...

I heard the PC versions were terrible (in the sense of running I mean) to play. I recall my friend saying FF7 kept crashing randomly, FF8 didn't let you scan or cast it sometimes. Sorta like the PSP PSN FF8 before the patch lol

Hopefully they do it and fix what was wrong with them.

I played both on PC when they came out (didn't have PS) and there wasn't really anything wrong with them. Infact 8 was better on PC because you had the mini-game which enabled you to get some pretty cool stuff.

I recently replayed 8 on PC, and did not have any problems doing so- although you had to play the game at full screen.

Steam is a service used by PC gamers as a forum of DRM. With this service, PC gamers can buy video games in digital form and install them to their computers. They have regular sales, and have a rather large amount of games to buy. However, if you're not a PC gamer, than odds are, you won't care.

It's made by Valve, the same guys behind Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and many more.

A damned good service that is single handedly saving PC gaming.

They also have adapted most of the games for Macs too.
