Pretty straight forward I think.
Who do you think and/or want to be nominated for what?
And who do you think and/or want to win.

I guess I better start the ball rolling.
I want Waltz with Bashir to win best picture, hopefully The Dark Knight won't win.

I don't agree that The Dark Knight should win, as well. It was a well-directed, well-acted and generally put together, but IMO watching it almost felt like watching 2 movies jammed into one. Shrug. I saw it 4 times, but that's cuz I get free movies w00t :wacky:
I wouldn't mind if Heath got the Best Supporting actor. He was very very good, though I felt the hype around him kinda overshadowed the other great performances in that film. Would still be well-deserved, no doubt.

I haven't seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button yet, but it seems like the kind of movie the Academy generally goes for. Wall-E for best animated film, if there is any justice :P

Is there even a list of nominees out yet? Looking at the films released this year, I don't see too many that stand out particularly ;) The only big contenders I can see from 2008 maybe: The Dark Knight, Benjamin Button, Australia, Revolutionary Road... that's from the big movies I remember though

I'm a bit iffy on whether Heath Ledger should win Best Supporting Actor. He is great as the Joker, but you have to ask if he'd be a serious contender to win if we were still alive. Even James Dean didn't win when he was nominated after he died. As good as Ledger was I feel a win for him would feel more like a sympathy vote.

As for contenders for Best Picture, I'd have The Curious Case of Benjamin Button down as the frontrunner, it is meant to have similarities to Forrest Gump (which cleaned up at the Oscars, and both films share the same script writer) and ticks a lot of the 'Oscar boxes'. Slumdog Millionaire looks nailed on for a Best Picture nomination and will be a strong contender too, and then it's the likes of Revolutionary Road, Frost/Nixon, The Reader, The Dark Knight etc to fill the rest of the slots.

The one guarantee is Wall-E will win Best Animated Film XD (and I have no complaints about that, as it's great)

The Oscar nominations come out in late January for the person who asked (with the ceremony itself in late February) - and whoever said they hoped Hugh Laurie would win for House, the Oscars are for films, not TV shows.

Of course the Oscars never get it right anyway! You can fill a book with all the wrong decisions they've made :)

And quite rightly so, I think.

My only other one I can come up with is Aaron Eckheart as Best Supporting Actor. He was definitely the best point of The Dark Knight - I didn't think Heath Ledger was all that great in it, but Mr. Eckheart was simply brilliant.

Eckhart was amazing in TDK, and should at least get a nomination. In fact, I'd say the only low point in acting for the movie were by Maggie Gyllenhaal and Christian Bale himself. To me, Ledger, Eckhart and Oldman were all equal in their performances.

Otherwise, I'm hoping that Fincher will get a best director nod, just because I've thoroughly enjoyed all the other movies he's worked on. Of course, that's a completely unfair reason to give the award away... but it's not like it hasn't been done before (*coughmartinscorsesecough*).

I wouldn't mind Heath Ledger getting an Oscar. As a matter of fact, I think it would be the best and final award that he should ever achieve.

Here's the list of nominations

I'd like Milk to win best picture and Waltz with Bashir to win best foreign language picture, and for Sean Penn to win best actor. But besides that I have no strong feelings about any of the other nominations.

I think Best Picture is between Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, with the former as the slight favourite at the moment. It currently has the momentum anyway. They may choose to split Best Film/Director between the two films perhaps.

I felt that Best Actor was between Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn, but Frank Langella could be a dark horse in that category. And I think Best Actress is between Kate Winslet and Anne Hathaway. The only real certainties at the moment are Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor (though I'd laugh my head off if Robert Downey Jnr pulled off a shock) and Wall-E for Best Animated Film.

I think we were a little spoilt last year when two terrific films in No Countty for Old Men and There Will Be Blood were the main contenders, so this year's list looks pretty staid in comparison. I've barely seen anyone have a good word to say about The Reader, but as usual the Weinsteins have managed to crowbar another film onto the shortlist. The Wrestler, Wall-E and The Dark Knight have all been snubbed (The Wrestler especially), but then the Oscar voters hate animated films and comic-book films (not to mention almost anything comedic). Films that don't conform to the profile of a typical Best Picture nominee are all too often sheparded into the Best Screenplay categories (Lost in Translation, Sideways, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, every Pixar film) or technical awards.

The Oscars narrow focus on what to nominate is their biggest flaw. But then if you listed all the mistakes the Oscars have made you could go on for hours.

I'd like Slumdog Millionaire to win I think. It's a very good film and its sheer exuberance carries you along.

I'll say Slumdog Millionaire to sweep a few awards including Best Picture, Mickey Rourke for Best Actor, Wall-E for Best Animated Film, and Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor.
