Starting next week you’ll be able to play Final Fantasy I through IX all on one platform.

That is, if FFIII works with the PS Vita. Compatibility with Sony’s newest handheld is currently unknown, but Final Fantasy III for PSP is set to launch Tuesday September 25th in North America on PSN – just five days after the Japanese release.

The news comes straight from the PlayStation Blogcast, without a single word from Square Enix proper. We expect a formal announcement and pricing some time next week.

I think this is weird that they actually arent doing a physical release and only a digital one.

I can't say I'm too surprised at the lack of a physical release, at least over here: the PSP seems to have become a forgotten handheld. It never had much support over here, anyway, and whilst I know North America got more PSP games than we did - and I've got the imports to prove it - given the Vita's release I imagine the PSP will eventually fade away into the background. I think it'll hit the rest of the Western world as well - unless Square Enix conveniently forget that Europe, Australia and the UK etc all exist again - but I can't see us getting a physical copy either...no store would stock it. I doubt GAME would anyway, given their often pitifully small PSP section.

I'm more interested in the pricing, though. Given this is a very old game by this point, I wouldn't expect it to be more than £10...from any other developer. If Square Enix charge full price for this again, that's just plain ridiculous, especially considering the price of the iOS version. I'd consider buying it again just so I can have I-IX on my Vita (assuming it's Vita compatible, which it really should be) but not if I had to pay any more than £10 for it. It's just not worth any more than that anymore.

I already have it. Its a very decent port. Its better than the ds version. Well its practically the same but the graphics and sound have more quality. With this I can play the games from 1-9 on the psp! I love it.
