Square Enix signs Unreal Engine 3 deal for unannounced projects

Epic’s announced that Square Enix has licensed Unreal Engine 3 for “multiple” unannounced projects.

“It is a pleasure to provide Square Enix with an exceptional game engine that will help them bring thrilling new experiences to legions of fans all over the world,” said Epic Games Japan territory manager Taka Kawasaki.

“Many Western games have achieved great success with the Unreal Engine, and this milestone reflects the Japanese development community’s trust in our technical prowess. We can’t wait to see how Square Enix fuses the power of Unreal Engine 3 with its beautiful characters, enthralling storylines and fantastic gameplay.”

No further details on the deal were announced.

Square Enix has several in-house engines, including Crystal Dynamics’ CDC Engine for Tomb Raider, IO’s Glacier 2 from Hitman Absolution and the next-gen optimised Luminous Studio.

But it isn’t the first time Square Enix has built games for Unreal: in late 2008, Square released The Last Remnant for Xbox 360, which was also made with the engine.

Yeah, let's just keep crappy american engine to crappy american games.

Last time I checked, Japan had a dying market and most used in-house engines, so who has the crap games now? :smartass: I'm pretty sure a game is bad because of the company and not the engine. The Last Remnant being the perfect example, they used the Unreal Engine, the game was glitched to hell and then a statement came out afterwards saying that those who produced it basically had no idea how to use it.

I don't know why they bother, unless they're actually ready for the kit by now, and are planning to either release The Last Remnant for the PS3 (something Japan still really really wants for some unfathomable reason) and/or make another game using this engine. The Last Remnant's development was so troubled because the whole kit had to be translated, sent over, tinkered with to get used to it (and that took some sweet time), then some further updates to the engine were released - that would have to be translated to Japanese, a time consuming task - that all in all stalled development considerably. It just wasn't the most intuitive move pragmatically.

If they can make something semi-decent with it, then go ahead, but I heard all the negatives about The Last Remnant, with the substantial lag, glitches ass mentioned and ugly textures being some of them.
