One year ago, news of a possible Steam release for Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII hit the web via RPGSite’s investigation into Steam registry files. Since then Square Enix has yet to announce anything official. Originally, the two games were ported from the PlayStation for the PC by Eidos, which would later become a part of Square Enix.

Today, Square Enix filed for domain “finalfantasyviipc.com” You can view the domain listing information here.

Might just be domain squatting, and it may never be realised. Who knows though.

Just to add to this news.

Square Enix have registered a rather suspicious, potentially exciting domain name. FinalFantasyVIIPC.com was registered yesterday by the company best known for its Final Fantasy games, although as of yet there's nothing actually on the page. Could it be a hint at a remake? A re-released edition of the classic on Steam or GOG? Perhaps Square are gearing up towards revealing a new member of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. Maybe it's less exciting, maybe it's just going to be a site dedicated to all the information about the creation and reaction to the game.
My bet is that they've registered it so nobody else can, personally, but that's the pessimistic view and an attitude like that isn't going to result in anything new and exciting. My second bet would be a re-release through digital channels, but it seems an odd time to be doing it and hardly seems worthy of a massive celebration considering that anybody who really wants to play Final Fantasy VII on PC has been able to do it for years.
We'll wait and see, although this one has the potential of being a fairly major reveal.

I'd be extremely surprised if after all the PS3 users begged for a remake, the remake only got created for the PC. Seeing a patched up version of the PC port getting released would be nice, though. What with all the downloadable enhancements the community has made for the game, the graphics would be far from current-gen but still miles better than the PS1. As it is though, the unreliability of the PC route makes the PS1 the better option still. A re-release could fix that up right quick, if handled correctly.

However, my first thought was the same as the author Hayabusa quoted. SE probably just did it for the sake of securing their IP.

If that was the case,

Why hasn't SE done it sooner, or earlier?

They waited, what? 15 years to secure an FFVII related domain.

Notice in the domain listing that in the domain's history, there have been 2 registrars, with 1 drop. What's this 1 previous ownership? A scam website? A place to pirate FFVII for PC? In any case, it's possible someone was abusing the FF name and SE taking over the domain is reactionary. FFVII being about the most popular FF game ever made, it wouldn't be surprising for a pirate to try and play off of the name to draw people in even so many years later.

I do hope as much as anyone that this is signaling a remake, of course!

i'm either going for a stream release or a version with up to date models, but that just my view :3 pretty exciting news for once on square enix's half :wacky:

Whatever it is.... it's going to be disapointing...

I'm actually one of the rare few that doesn't want a remake and just prefer the original to stay untouched in it's aged but still precious glory. However a remake done well could be exiciting.

Though judging by Crisis Core and such twisting and changing the original FFVII storyline that seems doubtful. Plus the VA's for FFVII are not very good. Aerith sounds dry, Cloud sounds emotionless, and Cid sounds like a yokel. Maybe I'm just a old fart that prefers retro games; I don't know. But a remake just for flashy graphics seems sort of... pointless ? Graphics in games are not everything which most people my age and some older sadly fail to realize. FF VII as a remake has potentinal to shine; but it also has potentinal to annoy and disapoint those who grew up as kids and maybe older playing the original and wouldn't enjoy the story or character development being changed. Sure you can download the original on the PSN network for $10 but older games sadly have a way of disapearing and being forgotten unless it's something crazy-famous like Mario or Zelda.

A FFVII remake could push the original into the background and be forgotten in history expect by the oldies that remember it in it's original former glory.

SquareEnix has already changed everything with the recent games. How much more can be twisted; seriously ? Are they going to add Genesis within the Nibelhiem tradgey ? Are they going to include Angeal somewhat ? None of them existed before. None of them should be added within the original.
But knowing Square-Enix they would add them in; because recenlty they seem to be ignoring the older fans... or is it just me ? Final Fantasy XIII seemed to be more suited towards teenagers of this recent gerenration. And it shows; look up on Tumblr. A site dominated by 13- 17 year olds; 18-24 only rarely.

What I'm saying is that Final Fantasy VII shouldn't be touched anymore. A remake wouldn't really respect some of the older fans. Some oldies might enjoy the idea- but I bet them $5 down the line they'll be complaining about what the remake has changed and how it has ruined the original in some way or some form.

Hopefully this is just something small. But it if is a remake or another FFVII- I'll be crossing my fingers for all the FFVII lovers out there; that it's doesn't screw up. That it stays respectful towards the classic, and that it's a bloody good game. :dave:

Sorry if this is messy or bad spelling or grammar the sun is in my eyes and my curtain is broken. :gasp:
