Square Enix Japan has just uploaded a new Lightning Returns development documentary video to Youtube. We were lucky enough to spot a new alpha gameplay clip from the video footage. The new clip didn’t show much, but you can see the clock, huge map and two new characters with Lightning.

Note this is just alpha gameplay clip, so that scene or characters’ designs aren’t final.

There is nothing manly about this first shot, its filled with bubbly princess women. That second girl in the. Middle she has either some ridiculous hat or hairdo or there is a third unknown person behind her. The chess patterned floor is booooorringg. Hideous imo.

They look like three women in a kitchen....where they belong. luululululz

...:toni:

Really though...this looks shit so far. That screen shot has done the game 0 justice.

don't forget.... it is a developers screenshot... the checkered floor means it just has a placeholder texture on it at the moment..... it will look better :lew:

Well really, no matter how much Square Enix improve upon the gameplay, they will NEVER be able to do anything even remotely passable with its story or its cast. It's FFXIII. It already has the legacy of two of the worst JRPGs of this generation (or any other, for that matter) weighing it down, and the curse of having the absolute worst video game character of all time as a protagonist. It would need to be all gameplay with absolutely no story whatsoever to be worth a look-in, and that is about as likely as the "happy ending" that was promised being Lightning dying and the world ending permanently.

I will remain open-minded about the gameplay, because I suppose they could actually do something interesting, and not just mix-and-match a bunch of Western-inspired gimmicks that do not belong in the JRPG genre together like they did with XIII-2. The "world-driven" mechanic described actually reminded me more of the Atelier series than it did Majora's Mask, with a time-limit and actions taking up bits of the time-limit, and the need for multiple playthroughs, etc. That's a good gameplay mechanic if executed properly. So, if they're going to incorporate things like that, it could be playable, unlike the previous two games. I'll not dispute that the gameplay could be passable at least, enjoyable at most; this blurred mess of a possible gameplay footage shot thing doesn't really do anything to suggest otherwise. It's nowhere near enough to form an impression of the gameplay, at least for me. It's just three people standing in one place...and maybe a flashy image of Lightning powering up, slightly earlier on.

But as for the game itself, as a whole, I don't see how it can be anything other than a pile of utter trash; no amount of good gameplay can make up for a shit story and shit cast, and this game is already doomed to have a shit story and shit cast, because that's what the first two games had, and it's associating itself with those two games by being a continuation of XIII-2, no matter how indirectly that may be. Nothing good can come of anything with "Final Fantasy XIII" in the title. This might be a bad game with passable gameplay, but it will never be anything other than a bad game.

Cue multiple people telling me how negative I'm being, or whatever. I'll not be checking this topic again, so you'd be wasting your breath in quoting me endlessly. Let's save our epic showdown for a bigger thread with something (ideally gameplay mechanics) more substantial to criticize, shall we?
