UK charts: FFXIII-2 overthrows FIFA 12, MGS HD storms in

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the new number one in the UK charts, taking over from FIFA 12 after a six-week spell.

FIFA drops to fourth thanks to the release of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection in second and Battlefield 3 gaining two spots in third.
Other new entry Soul Calibur V came in fifth. The rest of the charts are otherwise movers and shakers.

I can never understand why news reporters make a big deal out of FIFA dropping places, they do it every year. :wacky: By the sounds of it, FIFA12 has been top for some time which means it's been hovering in or around pole position for nearly 5 months :ohoho: MGS and FFXIII-2 will have dropped massively by the second week charts mind.

I can't understand how FIFA manages to sell this well every year. IT'S THE SAME GAME EVERY YEAR, PEOPLE!!! :rage:

Neither can I understand who is still buying Just Dance. I swear, these people need to find a proper Wii game to buy. :mokken:

And no real surprise that FFXIII-2 managed number 1. The slow burning games can only sell as many nowadays, and the previous month or so hasn't exactly had many notable new games coming out. If Square did one thing right, it's the timing of FFXIII-2's release.

Yeah, the only reason FFXIII-2 sold well was because nothing else came out *rolls eyes*

Contrary to popular belief, I think the FIFA series is one of the few sports games that actually makes noticeable improvements every year. Though I've never played it, so I can't say for sure. I've heard good things about them, though.

I don't see what the fuss is about FF XIII-2 getting sales. It seems the only people complaining about the game have yet to even play it.

+ Hype
+ Still a strong fanbase
+ Franchise name
+ January was largely a quiet month, compared to if it came out during the frenzy of Q4 2011.

Am I missing anything else? Or is everything I am saying about this game constituting as cheap and irrational bashing simply for the lulz? Besides, I was only speculating as to why it got to the top spot. Of course it was going to sell well.

It didnt have that much hype at all. Actually, if anything, it had negative press due to low expectations from FFXIII (exaggeratedly low epectations).

Still a strong fanbase. That shouldnt be a knock against it. I know you said you didnt mean it this way, but it sorta came off as such.

Name - also shouldnt be held for or against it. All companies try to get their games to have brand recognition so it will sell. This is where it also sounds like its a knock against FFXIII-2, when in fact, it's a pretty good game regardless of name.

January is always a quiet month usually, due to the holidays. It's selling well regardless and still would have

^ Yeah, they weren't meant to be knocks. I was genuinely hastily listing off the top of my head reasons as to why it got the No. 1 position. Had FFXIII-2 been released during the same fiscal period as Assassin's Creed Revelations, Skyrim, BF3, MW3 and the like, it would have been completely swamped. I would rather have something like that and Amalur up there than the constant FIFAs and CoDs. But oh well, they're only charts.

But it's still essentially the same game every year. At least Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed - as churned as they may be nowadays - offer different games - but not new experiences - year in and year out. If you already have the 2007 version of FIFA for instance, I don't really understand why you would bother shelling out for every annual edition that follows. The fundamental differences may be the AI modifications, smoothness here and there, perhaps tweaks to the online feature, updated teams etc.

Ah, what do I know? I'm not the target audience. But it's always baffled me. :olivia:

Not too surprised by this.... not many games were out in the week of FFXIII-2 (really interesting ones, anyway)... I wonder what it's gonna be like when Mass Effect 3 releases.

The relative #'s are irrelevant for this type of conversation, so looking at the ranks is worthless. You have to compare total units sold- that would "adjust" for the fact nothing else came out that week. If you compare number sold during first week of 13-2 to the top games from the weeks before christmas you would get a more accurate picture.

Comparing a game that released after christmas to ones that came out 2 weeks before Christmas isnt a fair comparison. Things, regardless if good or bad, sell much more just for the fact that parents are looking for presents

You missed the point- I don't mean it has to be those 2 weeks, I am just saying that looking at the ranking is meaningless.

If your hypothesis is correct, and 13-2 does comparably then you can say its a conservative estimate?
For instance, 13-2 on ps3 would've been the at least the #3 seller in first week of Dec.

Then I'm sure you'll have no quarrels with Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (An Action RPG) as it's just come out and also took the # 1 spot on the charts.

Can't say I'm surprised really. :bored:
