it's a different method to customize characters, if you use magic a lot, then they'd become better mages, if you fight a lot, then they become better fighters...
the question is to define major story... granted three years can do a lot... FFVI isn't too high on my list as far as plot points go, cause once you get to the WoR and control Celes and find people, then the game pretty much stops story wise until you get to the end boss... All you get is filler...
I love the battle system, still trying to get used to gambits, if anyone could help me out by giving me ideas on how to structure them it would be greatly appreciated. please pm me about it if you would.

I think it was because of the high of FF7, everyone loved FF7, I mean, everyone and their dogs and grandmas loved FF7.... FF8 came out, people didn't like it, it sold, but it wasn't liked, so they continued thinking that Square will do something more like FF7 with FF9, they didn't so that's why...
hmmm... at that point it was Cecil, Yang, Tellah, Porom and Palom, then the twins cast stone and Cid joins up.... It changed to further plot, the creators wanted to give you a view into their different personalities and not just have them as characters who join but have nothing to them... I...
