I was going to reply in the thread but it is a bit off topic, the best example is the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb and you literally follow the main character from childhood to adult and he builds connections and looses them and goes through hard trials etc I wouldn't want to spoil it to much if you haven't read it. Another one was Soldier Son trilogy also by Robin Hobb
