[TD] Team debate "mods"

Would you also be willing to lend a hand in the adaption, expansion, discussion, of the idea. For example after we gather the right collective amount of people to be involved, I was thinking of opening the thread to talk about maybe remaking the first debate votes, or instead tweaking it for the future vote and involvment of the public. Is this something you would also participate in?

Yes. However, I'm avoiding the first debate because I can easily see it being something I would much rather read, than actually write up long posts about. I would moderate and offer ideas and the such, but I think for a debate like that I would simply get more enjoyment out of reading it and making sure everything runs smoothly.

As long as your heart is in it... welcome to the club. Lets make the forums proud.

Now with this inclusion. We have four people (who have shown the most intrest and experience in the idea.) Those people are me, Draklor, Dragon mage, and Exocraet.

I will be back in some hours, and when I return I will read through the thread to take a look at the overall comments and users pieces. After I have compared them myself I will also ask the confirmed three for their non biast opinions and comparison of people intrested (discretely of course), that way they also have a choice in who they think would be a good addition. When I do this, remember that you should include intrest from the start, and up until now, when choosing. So make sure you read through this thread and the original as well, so you are able to fairly draw a conclusion on who would do a good job.

I know Ness has some debate exprience and offered to help, as does California WV. I am hoping they will opt to join.
I'm game

I study law at university so last year was pretty much dedicated solely to being able to argue (there was literally a module that lasted all year on being able to debate/negotiate/extraction) your point in terms of both case law and well as general debating points in lectures and seminars such as "Should the law clamp down on those who download music illegally" and other general every day issues as well as peer learning. So naturally there is a large amount of to-an-fro between individuals and groups as a whole. Of course there needs to be a large amount of patience too as some people are just naturally better debaters than others whereas others will gradually build on their debating skills; some people will also have better access to materials (e.g, those studying at higher education or those whose job occupations allow them access to better resources than those who may just use Wikipedia).

I did a lot of extraction from materials both online and in the library last year as well varying from standard text books to academic journals to monographs and bibliographic works. So in "modding" debates as it were, I'd comfortably understand the strength of one's source. I've worked very closely with my tutors and lecturers in university too so I'd happily pass on the information to others if they need help. Of course, I'm not just singling this to law aspects but debating as a whole. :)

Not meaning to toot my own horn here, lol, but I really do think I could perform this job very well.
This.

While I'm tempted to agree to do this, I would actually like to see every one become involved. Chances are I will already be modding around in there, so I am a "watch dog" already. :lew:

I am also not a very good person to produce debating ideas. It's just not a talent of mine to have controversial topics floating around in my little mind. :(

I do, however, have some things you may want to consider adding to your oncoming debates. I will post the exact same list in the other thread, but to save you the effort...

1) A better idea of how long these will be. For example, will one pop off each week? How would you go about the polls, team sign ups (you're still going with picking your own team, right?) as well as the actual debate with that time frame?

Perhaps this is a project for every other week. One week for collecting score of the previous debate, cycling ideas, publishing sign ups and appointing your "mods" for that debate. The following week would be the debate week (yes, an entire week). Cycling between those two is (in my mind) the best way to manage everything you will need to do. It would be very easy to become very burnt out from the constant demand of weekly debates.

2) A different name for your mods. I know you aiming to avoid mess and confusion. This is a very simple, small step in the right direction.

3) Punctuation. Literally. You're going for a serious debate thread, full of collected facts, opinions and lifestyles. Things get confusing easy. Personally I skip all debate posts that are an enormous wall of text, which could have easily been broken down to make easier to read and follow along with. I don't expect everyone to seem like a college professor with every post, it isn't hard to run things through word or similar programs (if you have them) first to catch simple mistakes that could be breaking or essential.

My opinion is a simple reminder within your rules, somewhere along the lines of:

"Remember, this is a professional environment. While poor grammar is not an offense that can bar you from these debates, some readers may choose to simply skip the posts which you have poured your effort into."

I'd definitely be interested

I love looking and reading debates, more than I do being in one.
I also have a few ideas for debates, more so so I can learn than anything else :lew:

I am on here pretty often, so that would be a plus.

I was on the Debate Team and took a few classes, I may not be the best myself but I know the basics.

Point is, I love debates and it is sad to see them always deteriorate to name calling and many people repeating themselves. So, if I actually try I could do some good :ryan:

Thank you POCKETS for your support and assistance in all of this. I'm sure it is greatly appreciated by everyone who wants it to happen. /bow /clap

I agree. These people won't serve as just watch dogs, but like guardian angels of the idea itself, intent on offering ideas and helping it grow.

I am also not a very good person to produce debating ideas. It's just not a talent of mine to have controversial topics floating around in my little mind. :(

Dont be so modest =)

Anyone is welcome to offer suggestions

So far we have talked very little about it (this is one of the reasons for this thread, to make people who have intrest step up and volunteer.) We did mention two voting polls would be good. One would reflect what side the viewer stands on, and the other would refect the team or users that they think did the best job debating their sides. This ratio of difference is a good showing sign for how well you did.

Yes this is what I am hoping for. Seeing as we have three catergorys: Randon setup, standard sign up, and FF. I figure we can have a cycle of at least one going on every week. Also we cannont forget about team challenges, which will involve any person on this forum who wants to set up a debate.

2) A different name for your mods. I know you aiming to avoid mess and confusion. This is a very simple, small step in the right direction.

Yes, SIX is making us a banner. We will henceforward be know as "The Debatists". I think its straightfoward, and others would agree with it, plus it sounds neat, TD's

I agree, myself included. I intend on running my posts through microsoft Word in order to get a word count and a spell check.

OK ITS FINAL. Draklor, Roland_Deschain, Starstruck, Exocraet, California Babe W V, and Dragon Mage. These people will make up "The Debatists". I would like to thank all of them, along with the others who showed intrest, for the parts they played in helping to create this idea. Give yourself a bow hehe. Everyone has done so much in the span of only a couple days, so lets not let up something we "know" there is demand for.

Next on the agenda. I will create a discussion forum for this group. I will post our banner when its finished, along with the rules. I will post the rough draft ideas we have for the poles, the debate votes, the moderation, more open involvment to the public, and everything else. The evolution process will be set to begin the instant this post is made.

This discussion thread will be the place that we carry on our discussion as to how we can take this good idea, and make it a great idea. We will all be fairly given say, and voices among each other as to what we shall do to continue.

The original Thread for discussion will remain open for the entire public to post in. Please make sure that if you have a good idea, that you make it heard.

Once again I would liek to thank everyone for faith in this idea. I would like to thank them for the support and consideration. I would like to thank the Mods for being supportive through all of this. Lastly I would like to thank the forums for the current and future support of the idea.
