For the moment it is predicted to arrive in 2013. The much anticipated saga that was written by Stephen King (7 novels, and an 8th coming to fill in between) is coming to theators in the form of 3 films. And television by several series

For those of you who are not familiar it is an amazing fantasy saga spanning across different times and universes incooperation western and folk fantasy along with the incooperation of many of King's favorite novels.

The series itself took the better part of thirty years to write as king began at age 19 and was was hit by a car after the creation of the third book. He contemplated not being able to finish the story but attributes his accident to one cause of inspiration, and finished in the early 2000's. This span in the story makes his depiction of time travel flawless and acurate.

Now the director Ron Howard, (apollo 13, cinderella man, da vinci code, far and away, cacoon, a beautiful mind, willow) is the one who will be taking on the task of the film production, and although has faced struggle with where the money would come from and the enormous task of the project he stated he would not be backing off of it. He says he would rather attempt something bold then to live off of his achievments. While it is not his usual work, I can only be greatful for him attempting to put the books I love onto screen.

As for actors to play Roland Deschain they seem to have been taking a good route and browsing fan sites to see who they think would be a good Roland. Certain names such as Viggo Mortison, and Daniel Craig.

At the newest news for the casting role of Roland it seems Javier Bardem has been offered the part and they are closing the deal on it.

As for other Information I will keep searching and post as I find it.

I have read the first five books and intend to order the final two books as soon as I can humanly afford them.

Can I get the source you are using please, I know they had the films and shows organised but they are currently having budgetary problems and haven't been green lighted yet. Unless that has changed very recently

Right now it seems to be a battle between contracts and funding. However it seems the most reliable "word of mouth" sources are the ones confirming its gonna happen.

There are other sources and interviews online but here are a few of them. One says universal is slowing down and Ron Howard is limping the idea, but then the later articles confirm agaisnt such claims, because the idea has been in production planning for about five years now, that is revealed to public anyhow.

Actually I do not see this totally as bad news. This information was realeased only some days ago, and perhaps it is the best route for the direction because it is said that they are attempting to take it elsewhere.

I definately do not think this means the end for the saga, because now there is intrests being showed by other major players such as Warner Brothers.

I actually attend a website for fans of DT and its a unanimous feeling that Unversal dropping the idea was a good thing. Warner Bros is finishing Harry potter, and Nolans Batman soon, and they have placed a lot of intrest in the series, as well has Ron Howards continued persistance with the films.

To sum it up the news is that Universal dropped it becauce they are cheap and short sighted, and decided to make a lame formula 1 racing flick. This leaves great opportunity for something better to pick it up, and not a single person has said they "will not" still get it out there.

This thread will stay up in case there are any fans out there who want to talk about it.

They also passed, over the fact that is going to cost an absolute monstrous amount of money to make, and it's a deal for three films and one or two mini-series. Javier Bardem would have been ideal as Roland though, so that's a shame.

They did not pass, it was never really offered. It will just be in a floating period until someone has time to pick it up, and WB is still busy finishing Batman, and Harry potter. They expressed postive intrest in another high expense fantasy saga to continue the progress. WB is more willing to take a shot at something risky, because their on fire. Universal is a putz making more short sighted profits.

Its in a transitional period until chosen by someone, and Ron Howards attempt will just inspire more to take a look at it.

So as long as I put posts like this up on the internet, they will see a fan saying dooo it, dooo it. :D

as long as ron howard has absolutely no involvement, i'll be happy. this is far too big a project for the likes of him to undertake, especially in the manner he plans it. it should be kept off the tv circuit and just planned as a massive saga of films, although it would probably take somewhere near 10 films for it to be truly successful, i think.

i'm glad universal have backed out, because a project like this needs a monster budget, comparable to avatar in my eyes and it needs a proper visionary director to give it a go, or even a team of directors collaborating - a peter jackson/zack snyder/chris nolan/danny boyle combo would be incredible.

I definately agree with the just being a film saga bit. This is truly what I want to see.

Also I am glad universal dipped out as well. I am really hoping that Warner Bros will take a whack at it, they usually always satisfy. I think a Gibson, Cameron, Nolan, Jackson would be pretty epic.
