From square enix members blog:

While still a deeply story-driven game, FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 has a higher emphasis on giving the player choices to make throughout the game. More branching paths, more hidden secrets, more exploration.

-Level design sees you returning to unlocked environments to access hidden areas as the game progresses.

-A self-contained story set after the events of FINAL FANTASY XIII. XIII-2’s story will be darker and more mysterious.

-All-new playable characters (Serah and Noel), plus the return of fan favourites from FINAL FANTASY XIII.

-The return of the much loved Moogle. A treasure hunter at heart, he will seek out hidden chests.

-Recruit monsters who will aid you in battle, each with unique abilities.

For those of you who wanted more from FINAL FANTASY XIII, the sequel is the game for you. As a FINAL FANTASY fan I had some specific things in mind that I wanted to see from XIII-2 and the more I see of the game, the more excited I get about it..

As you can see from the list above, XIII-2 has seen improvements and expansions in many areas (and these are just features we’re allowed to talk about right now). The designers of the game have made giving more choice to the player a key focus of theirs. Even in the small demo being shown off at E3, the level design features plenty of forks in the road, leading to hidden chests and lurking monsters, as well as wide open areas.

The developers also want players to have more control over their character and a larger variety of experiences in the game, which explains the inclusion of a jump button (the first in the numbered FINAL FANTASY series’ long history), which can be used to find hidden chests. Abilities will be gained throughout the game which will further allow exploration, making you return to areas you’ve visited before to see if your new skills can give you access to hidden areas and items.

Environments are filled with people, many of whom can be engaged in dialogue. A little speech bubble floating above their head will let you know if they have anything interesting to say. All of this dialogue is fully voiced.

Your objectives won’t always be straight forward. Sometimes you will be given a choice of which direction to go to reach your goal or of which order to perform certain tasks in. The E3 demonstration includes the choice to fight a large golem (we’re talking massive - like 20 storeys) or to investigate a mysterious device which has appeared out of nowhere. Investigating the device will lower the golem’s defences, making him much easier to kill, but if you fancy the challenge you can go straight into battle.

Some battles may include interactive “cinematic action” sequences, which require you to press specific buttons at specific moments. On succesful button inputs, rewards are given, depending on the situation. For example, hitting buttons correctly in the first golem battle in the E3 demo results in your party members receiving temporary stat buffs, making the rest of the battle that little bit easier.

We’re not talking too much about the game’s story right now, but we have said that the game takes place a few years after the events of FINAL FANTASY XIII. Lightning has disappeared, presumed dead, and her sister Serah is trying to find out where she’s gone, with the help of the mysterious Noel. You will not need to have played or completed FINAL FANTASY XIII to understand the story of XIII-2. It will help to know some of the backstory, but it has been designed to be accessible to newcomers.

For those who are fans of the franchise, you may be surprised and delighted to learn that Moogles are making a return. One such creature befriends Serah and has vowed to follow her on her quest to find Lightning. He has a few tricks up his sleeves, such as being able to reveal secret chests and other secret abilities which we will be revealing in time.

Another new addition is the recruitment of monsters. They will join your party and each species of creature will have a unique ability. You will be able to switch them in and out on the fly by changing the party’s Paradigm. Yep, the Paradigm Shift system makes a return, with some improvements and refinements. We’re not going into much detail on all the enhancements yet, but we thought you’d like to know that they exist.

So hopefully this whets your appetite a bit and demonstrates just some of the enhancements and improvements FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 will feature. I’m personally very excited about this game and we’ve got much more to tell you about it in the coming months, so keep an eye out here on the Square Enix Members Blog.

In short:
-Backtracking is back. You can use 'new abilities' acquired later in the game to access areas previously not accessable. I wonder if this has something to do with airship? water crossing? slope climbing? Moogle's new abilities?
-Moogles help you detect hidden chests
-NPC talking, non-linear, branching maps

Somehow I know people are still gonna find something to complain about.

Anyways, all that actually sounds good. I'm liking the optional paths, dialog bits, and that interesting bit about recruiting enemies in battle.

It sounds good for the most part but I agree with Fusionist, Theres going be something that people find to complain about the game... Just a matter of time.

Honestly, I would have been stoked if they kept everything the same, but all these changes sound really interesting. Seems like they have a bit of the C-RPG influence from games like Mass Effect.

It's not as if 'there is going to be complaints'. There are already complaints all over the place. The auto-battle, death of lightning (she's not dead, obviously), unable to switch between characters in battle, etc.

It's almost never possible to satisfy everyone. Just enjoy the game as it is and don't let haters influence your opinion on the game. Haters gonna hate :blah:

I really want the game now, especially that you can now backtrack and there are hidden paths. Just like the older games.

Moogles help find hidden chest? Am I the only one whose first image is the moogle flying to something not so far away saying "Hey! Listen!"

But it does sound better. I actually like this description better than the trailer.

Amen to the changes. All of which were needed in the last game.

I was probably always going to get the game- but now I am looking forward to it.

Im easily satisfied...Give me a story thets easy to understand and charecters thet I dont WANT to die and im pleased.
Ive had dear hopes of this game in some way redeaming XIII for me,The horrific battle system its predecessor had aside I just want to be able to empathise with the charecters and enjoy the story.
In a way Dissidia helped make Lightning more likable in my eyes so shes starting in ok standing and I like the idea of more or less choosing your own "rout" for playing the game...And honestly I realy dont think one can get much worse than XIII,in my eyes, even though ive said that for the past few FF's ....,I hold hope none the less for this game at least making the charecters more feeling(beyond "I want you to die") provoking.
While im still not a fan of the battle system at this point I doubt they could make it worse and it seems to be more involved this time arround wich is nice of them to add....But perhaps after a lot of bad things in games when a few nice things are thrown in they always seem better than they realy are.....

It doesn't look too bad, but this is looking to be more of Serah's story over Lightnings.
I wonder if she's only getting a small role in this installment. But then it really doesn't explain the first trailer now either, if Lightning is indeed the main character along with that new enemy (debut trailer) then I'm satisfied. For some reason I just never took a liking to Serah. Maybe because she was practically a small cameo in the first game, and this one she is just all over the place with dialogue and now even battles. I look forward to more trailers. Hopefully that isn't all we're gonna see from the e3.

I also see the release got pushed back to 2012 instead of winter. Bummer.

So basically they are whoring out for public and turned the game in a garbage western rpg.
Square, I'm disappointed.

Hmm. Sounds interestingly good. I like what I'm hearing so far. I'm glad to hear there's some choices in what a person can do now(even if it's small) it's still cool.

I'm still not sure if I'll play this if it's Sarah's story more than Lightnings. :hmmm:

Oh, fantastic. Not content with making us run through the same tediously boring pathways once, now they're going to make us do it again. Unless they include something useful - i.e. warp points or an airship - this is going to be a very tedious game.

As for recruiting monsters, that is a terrible idea. It didn't work for Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, and that had a much better...well, a much better everything to draw upon. I highly doubt FFXIII-2 will be able to turn that into a decent gameplay mechanic, given that the battle system is so atrocious to begin with.

I'm still waiting for something new here. Square Enix need to stop stealing ideas from everywhere else (i.e. every popular Western game in existence) and actually create something new. God of War, Mass Effect...what next? Will Lightning, that Kain clone and Serah have three pieces of a magicl artifact? :hmph:

Ok, that sounds better than the last thing I just read a few moments ago. As long as it's story driven still and doesnt have multiple endings, Im good.

Let's all be optimists here :). When they say it's more player driven than story driven, it doesn't mean they are ignoring the story... I mean, look at FFVII, it has a good storyline, but it's also player driven - you can make choices as to who you date in golden saucer, minigames, etc. The demo so far hints strongly for alternate dimension kind of story, which sounds complex enough to me.
