Okay, started a new job yesturday and Im very nervous. I was at the meeting and we get the mystery shopper in like every other shop. A mystery shopper, for those who dont know, is when someone is paid to come into a shop and behave like a regular customer. They then go back to the head of the company and give feedback on the shop and its employees.

Now my manager read out what they had got back from the mystery shoppers over the last month and most people scored 10/10, however those who got lower then 10 were yelled at and said you get 3 strikes at a non 10/10 mark. Once you get 3, you get sent to discilpinery!

I was shocked. My mum works for the same company and has never mentioned anything like this. I have worked before, but the other compaines werent as bothered as this store is!

Im terrified in case I do something wrong and I get a bad mark come next month. Of course one of the rules is "Treat every customer like you would the mystery shopper." But because Im new Im still gettting the hang of things and Im worried that I make a mistake in front of the mysrery shopper.

Ive been told not to worry and you get the hang of things, but there is so much to remember. And I dont want to keep asking my manager as she is quite stressed lately as we have been bought by a bigger supermarket name and we are changing everything. So everyone is on edge and panicking.

Sounds like a silly thing to get upset over, but I need this job in order to stay at university over the summer. And I dont want to let the team down.

I'm sure if you get a poor score in your first month they won't mind too much. You're still learning everything and you need time to get used to everything you need to do. I think it's a bit harsh that you have to get 10/10 though. A 7 or 8 would be fairer. Just out of interest where is it you're working?

Its becoming a Sainburys today.

However Ive started focusing more on my job then university work, which is bad! I discovered last night that I have 4 essays to write instead of 3 for 1st May, all bewteen 1,500 - 4,000 words!

Now my easter holidays are coming up and Im going to tell them today that I can only do the evenings as during the day Im going to be doing essay work and research. Sounds fair enough as Im on a student contract and they know that I have work to do.

Hmm, yes it's a good idea to balance your school time and your work time. I can imagine it's quite stressful, and I probably wouldn't be able to handle it. =/

Anyway, don't worry too much about mystery shoppers. The more you think, the stressful your job can get, therefore you'd be more prone to mistakes. Just relax and treat each customers nicely. If they've got problems, calmly explain the situation...if they still act like a jackass, that's when you call someone up and let them deal with it.

I have to deal with customers too, and I know it's not fun at all. Sure, there's the nice ones, but the crabby ones ticks me off. I don't let my temper get the best of me though. Hmm, and one other thing...if you're really confused about something, don't hesitate to ask. When I was a new cashier, I was so confused about things that every 5-30 minutes, I had to call someone for help. I did think that they might get irritated with me...but I thought, "Better safe than sorry."

Meh, now I'm off to deal with customers! And it's Friday too...gonna be a looooong night!

So good luck with your new job, and I hope you don't get those "I'll act like an ass" mystery shoppers! =/

Im slowly but surely getting the hang of it. Was on tills today and it was a busy night! Did get my fair share of complete morons, but the majority were lovely and polite to me. Yeah, I had to call for my manager several times and they said "Better safe the sorry" too!

It doesn't work. First of all it makes working under that boss horrible. It makes work suck, it kills the joy of it, it's horrible to do to people. And it doesn't make economic sense. Jerks at work are an economic liability for a corporation that costs the company money on a daily basis. The actual cost in dollars is staggering. Sure, it's a new field of study in management, and its missionaries have not yet managed to spread the good news to every corner of the earth. Still, those companies who are confronted with the data - especially the data on specific bosses who use paranoia and assholery to achieve their ends - immediately fire these people.

Yet this is beside the point. If you could make the world, would you make it a happy place? Would it be a nice place to live and work? Or would it be a 1984-type dystopia of perpetual paranoia and cruelty and fear?

I wouldn't create humans, that's for sure.

Or would I? As much as I sometimes claim to despise them, I find them terribly entertaining.

Besides, I only have this universe as a model.
